    Everyone is free to say whatever "controversial" thing they want, but you can't be mad that more people get upset than like it and those people decide they dont want their money going to you anymore. So many "cancel culture ruined comedy" comedians got used to people liking them because they were being genuinely funny that when they start getting lazy and punching down they confuse "Eh, thats not really that funny, no thanks" with "comedy is illegal now!".

    • @incidentlyaniguana2193
      @incidentlyaniguana2193 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      That is true in some cases but the issue is the internet made outrage a commodity. So there are people who just get cancelled over the stupidest stuff, then they start trending on twitter with a bunch of idiots mindlessly reacting to it, then the comedian might loose their job or sponsors because of something 90% of people have no problem with.
      Previously, unless you were doing some truly bad stuff, you could have a career. But now if you aren't portraying yourself flawlessly, you risk shooting your career in the foot. It has definitely had a negative effect on the comedy world. As it turns out, truly great comedy general requires bucking against the status quo. Otherwise it's boring and predictable.

    • @kyleyjs
      @kyleyjs 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it's not "people being upset though" it's a very small percentage of people that are only in significant numbers because they're sourced from gigantic physical regions into a bunch of communities where that attitude is concentrated and the idea of causing harm and holding any and all culture hostage to their ideals are prominent. These people aren't giving them the money in the first place, they're watching a clip on youtube and then brigading their employer with accusations.
      I haven't really ever heard of comedians having issues with in person shows, I have only heard clips of them complaining that one of their jokes went viral and then people who didn't go to the show complained to the business. I don't really think comedy is ruined though, it's just persecution is more national/international than before and the risks of that happening are higher, imo this is even starting to pass and we're starting to adjust to the internet where complaints are common, plentiful and likely not indicative of anything.

      Yeah, most edgy humor only works if everyone (especially the person doing it) is in on the joke. If you're taking it seriously at face value it's not an edgy joke, it's just a controversial opinion.
      Chappelle illustrates this really clearly. A lot of his earlier material works because he's mostly dismantling racist ideas from the inside out, the racist jokes are funny partially because he's highlighting the absurdity of anyone actually thinking like that. The transphobia stuff on the other hand falls flat because he legitimately doesn't seem to understand trans issues or want to put any effort into understanding them, so instead of twisting transphobic jokes to highlight how dumb transphobia is he's just saying transphobic shit and laughing. It doesn't help that the writing is also worse since he's not experienced enough with the topic to bring a legitimately fresh and funny perspective to it.
      TLDR: "it's just a joke" isn't a defense if it isn't actually a joke and you're just too afraid to say "nah, this is what I actually believe," which is what a lot of hacks that fall into this edgy humor trap don't get.

    When people complain about being "cancelled" and the consequences, they are really complaining about free speech and capitalism for two simple reasons:
    1. Free speech means everyone gets free speech. If you say something controversial, people have the right to respond to that.
    2. Because people have the right to respond however they wish, and capitalism means that most establishments you interact with are privately owned, you can experience consequences like being fired from your job for what you said online. Your employer is also a private citizen, and you are working on private property. Imagine if you didn't have the right to kick someone off your own property.
    That's why cancel culture can be so powerful. Free speech has benefits and consequences, and you can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't exercise your right to free speech, then complain about it when others exercise their right to ostracise you.

    • @core-nix1885

      Freedom of speech = Freedom to unperson?
      I don't know how anyone can justify taking a person's livelihood just because they have radical opinions (especially when power is transferred to corporations and governments to enforce this).
      Just as speech has consequences, those consequences have consequences - you'd be a fool to believe firing, censoring, arresting and/or harassing people for things that they say/write won't foster hatred and resentment.
      It amazes me that the "left-wing" position is to support the bourgeoisie against the proletariat in this regard.
