NASA, being the agency for Aviation and Space should be the ones in charge of licensing and safety not the FAA. The FAA should stick with getting the airline industry running smoothly and safely and get their noses out of commercial spaceflight. NASA is doing a great job stimulating that commercial innovation by handing out contracts and encouraging small companies to go to space.
It does seem sensible to have NASA doing this licensing, rather than the FAA. NASA certainly has more relevant knowledge about rocket launches than the FAA, and since Starship is an important part of NASA's moon mission, it would seem that NASA would be better motivated to not hold up Starship launches for frivolous reasons. Also, since NASA is flying astronauts, ISS cargo, and other space missions on SpaceX rockets, they would be far better positioned to make well informed decisions on licensing and safety.
Congress decided (correctly imo) that NASA does not have the expertise to regulate private industry. When Congress enacted law to cover commercial space, the FAA was named as the regulator for private commercial launches because they are well versed in regulating private companies, while NASA and the DOD would continue to regulate and license public launches using commercial providers. Congress also placed strict limits on the scope of the FAA's regulatory bounds. Space is regulated much more lightly that aviation, and there are time limits and milestones that will increase the FAA's scope. The intention is to eventually have the FAA regulate space the same way they regulate aircraft. We can debate the merits of separating space out of the FAA's scope. At the end of the day, the same administration would appoint leaders to the new regulatory body.
@joshua43214 The FAA was tasked with the airplane regulation. Space came later. They aren't geared towards speed and innovation. Both of which are needed for Aerospace. The FAA is just not up to the task.
@@Randyluck1 Yes, Congress gave them regulatory power, and then strongly curtailed their scope. They did this specifically to keep them from slowing the pace of innovation. They also need to time to create standard practices. The FAA is very much up to the job, it is exactly what they do. Being up to the job is not the issue, overstepping and mis-using their regulatory boundaries is the issue. Like I said, separating space from the FAA might not be the solution since the same person that appointed the FAA head, will also appoint a space regulatory body head.

Here's for true politics (=policies): 12,000 lunar craters are mostly formed by asteroid impacts rich in carbon compounds and metals. What will China do if they first establish mining exploitation on the Moon? The same they already do here on Earth, control and manipulate markets. Battery, Rare Earth minerals for high tech chips and BEV components. It is easy to see the importance of investing in space. Radioisotopes and water for propulsion, titanium and aluminium for building space structures such as stations and rockets, gold, platinum, ... Those will all be Chinese if we continue to hinder SpaceX. Moreover, NASA and the government should stop funding companies such as Blue Origin and Boeing because their technology is obsolete and expensive, they cannot compete with SpaceX or the upcoming Chinese Falcon9-like rockets. They should support innovative companies and solutions such as Dream Chaser and ALPACA.
Great job Ellie! Best interview yet. On a side note I watched flight 5 with your Mechazilla shirt and was hollering joyfully in my garage when they caught the thing!
You don't have to agree with Elon Musk politically (I don't), but his political opinions in public forums is his first amendment protected speech. For all the folks (left or right) that complain about him, I have a question: Do you track the political opinions of all the CEOs of all the companies whose products and services you use? I'm guessing not, because most of them are horrific. You can oppose their position (non-violently), and even work against their political views; that's the American way. But should we stop feeding people because you think the Nestlé CEO is evil? Should we ban iPhones because the CEO of Apple maliciously hides behind a Mr. Rogers persona? There's a line that separates political opinion from illegal activity. Compared to most CEOs, Elon Musk is probably one of the least repugnant. How dare he try to save the environment! How dare he try to improve the world's economies with boundless plenty! How dare he try to save humanity from a world-ending cataclysm! Yeah. There's evil, and then there are those you disagree with. They are not the same.
The other thing people miss is that Elon will tell you exactly who he is. What other CEO does that? Who would you rather have in charge of important companies, people that you know nothing about our someone who you know even if you don't agree with them. Another thing is even though I think Elon is misguided about how to solve the issues in our country i think he genuinely wants to solve problems. I think most politicians just want to keep the party in power.
I am firmly convinced that saving the environment, improving the world's economies with boundless plenty (lmao), saving humanity from world ending cataclysm (rolfmao, the hyperbole >_< ) are very low or do not appear at all on Musk's list of desires. He doesn't really care about these things, it's marketing. Do you honestly think he wants Mars? Mars makes no sense and he knows it, but he also knows that it's a great aspirational talking point and he uses it for his own propaganda. And apparently you fell for it.
@@andrewgoodall2183 So you believe he's telling you what he thinks politically, but don't believe him (or the 150,000 people that work at SpaceX & Tesla) when their corporate goals are verbalized? Is that why he gives away the Tesla patents for free? Is that why he's creating a Starship factory for mass production of a 100% reusable vehicle that can be refueled from the local environment on the Moon and Mars? Is that why he's creating a low cost workforce for 1/20th of the price of the competition? Perhaps you should consider taking up ventriloquism, since you're so adept at talking out of both sides of your mouth.
@@andrewgoodall2183 Space X was founded in 2004 if I recall correctly. Musk was at the Mars Society two years prior to founding Space X talking about a mission to Mars. You really need to read one of his biographies or crap, even the Wikipedia articles on him and on Space X would do you some good.
Freedom of speech means freedom of thought = political freedom = freedom to expose ANY ideas. When a govt. agent who has political power to issue deadly threat, e.g., regulate, admits to punishing for political beliefs, they have confessed to violation of the 1st amendment. This is in violation of their oath of office. It is openly admitting to a crime and an immoral act. The admissions of the criminals in public is proof of their ignorance or their assumption of unlimited power or both. We the People need to demand they be punished or do it ourselves if these crimes are sanctioned. It is time for the people to take back their political power from the failed system that has embarrassed, infuriated, and disgusted us.
I don't know about that. Ever watch any 1950s science fiction movies about space. They had quite a few rockets taking off and landing just like the Space X rockets do. The first time seeing the Falcon 9 boosters landing was so awesome. Made me think of those old movies.
This isn't surprising. Visiting KSC about five years ago, they were all about ULA this, Boeing that, didn't want to give any face time to SpaceX aside from a couple begrudging parts of a clothing rack in a random gift shop. Never mind SpaceX being the reason so many are once again interested in the topic.
A dear friend has zero interest in, or knowledge of, space travel but recently mentioned how terrible Elon Musk is because her news sources are showing her videos and she now thinks his rockets blow up.
Yea most of the people I work with when I asked them if they has seen the rocket getting caught said, " they were surprised it didn't blow up like the rest of his rockets " . It's crazy how people make massive options on people with such little information 🤦♂️.

National Security is way more important to America and Americans than petty politics. These people are sick partizans. Time to vote the clown show out and return to neutral public servants in office and other government agencies.
in the USA politics wil always be controverse. You only think black or white or better blue en red. There are way more colours to choose from
@@gijzjedo you ever reflect on what you're addressing?

Can you imagine the experts in Russia watching this Flight 5? Holy Smokes, they might be saying.

Under the US constitution your right to a political opinion is guaranteed. If you work in a public office you should either leave your political opinion at home or stay at home.
Those have never ever existed in government, US or otherwise.
If it weren't for Elon Musk and SpaceX we would have to rely on Russia to get our astronauts to the ISS.
On the flip side, there probably wouldn't be a war with Russia if the USA needed them for transport😅
@@supercadet111 No, if Russia ever thought it could get the upper hand there would be an immediate sneak attack that would make Pearl Harbour look like a hissy fit in a sand pit.
There would be no point in relying on Boeing.

Assuming they did not just deorbit the ISS sooner rather than later, if they didn't have support for the old school cost for a launch system.
The biggest problem is that these useless bureaucrats are paid with my tax money 😪
Yes, useless is the word for it. Did y'all see Congress interview FAA's Whitaker!? What a waste.

I thought this was your best and most professionally presented podcast yet. I’m very proud of you the Highlander.😊
T Y very much, @Randyluck1.

@@gijzje The Democrat left began attacking Elon as soon as he said that he’d allow Trump back on Twitter when he was in the process of buying that platform, so who are the bad guys here?
(I believe that deep down you know the truth)
@@gijzje Elon owns 40% of SpaceX and his personal involvement in politics shouldn't effect SpaceX's ability to operate.

Wow, thank you! I’m so happy to hear you were repping Ellie in Space!
Not only has no one ever caught a booster on a tower, but now one had reused boosters that landed on land or on a barge in the ocean!
Rubbish if anything going to mars is Elons main plan from the beginning above all else
@@andrewgoodall2183 Space X was founded in 2004 if I recall correctly. Musk was at the Mars Society two years prior to founding Space X talking about a mission to Mars. He's been very consistent with putting his money where his mouth is on this subject ever since.

The pollution from just one major airport is more than few rocket launches.
Wow Ellie! So good. Thank you.
Great report. Just unbelievable behavior from those commissioners. And so open about it! They really feel justified!
‘Elon musks Mars rocket spectacularly fails’ is the usual headline, with no explanation of this being a test programme
Yea most of the people I work with when I asked them if they has seen the rocket getting caught said, " they were surprised it didn't blow up like the rest of his rockets " . It's crazy how people make massive options on people with such little information 🤦♂️.
