I remember these being popular about 20 years ago. Every mall in the area had at least 2 candle stores that sold or made these and every house had at least one prominently displayed.
Yeah my mom always ask our family from Hawaii to get them for her, we even got a big xmas one. Honestly, I rather burn them because it’s dusting on our shelves
@@patstone3259 they are coming back around now i see ads in my city for making candles like this. And for $100 i am signing up. 10 classes and we keep the items we make
Use to watch this being done at the mall all the time , well various malls in various cities over the years , during the holiday seasons. Very fun and entertaining to watch in person. Never got tired watching. I had a couple, lost in the many many moves I've made but never could bring myself to burn them. I have heard that some people sit a tea candle in the top divit and burn that instead of the actual candle.
Used to watch a guy make them in the mall. Simple once you have practiced. You start out practicing on all white so you can melt your mistakes and try again.
I saw someone do this in real time at a mall store back in '92. We bought a bunch of the mushroom candles and two of the bigger ones I think...almost thirty years later and I still remember that day, those candles were so beautiful.
I've watched people carve candles in person and it was gorgeous to watch. I literally could have stayed there all day watching their creations. They made it look so easy and flawless. This lady was amazing to watch, she's very creative/talented.
Disagree. This is not hard work, in fact it's very relaxing. Hard work is hanging 5/8 drywall by yourself on vaulted ceilings. Hard work is mining with your hands and buckets in Zimbabwe in the heat and filth. Hard work is when the Haitians eat dirt cookies to survive. You no nothing of hard work. When the EMP hits you will be amoung the first to go. You will look back at this comment as the band of hard workers take what's yours and dispatch your friends and family. Only then will you understand hard work as you try desperately to take your last breath. Gurgling, pressure, warm fluid dripping down the throat. Breathing will be hard work. Just as you finally truly understand hard work, darkness will fall and fail you as will your memory. I love you and want what's best for you TH-cam friend. Learn what hard work is before it's to late. Appreciate hard work. Do hard work. Big Black said it best. "Do work son!"
Holland House Candles is still in business! After watching this with my kids, we had a Christmas Candle made for my wife. We light it every year... we love it!
I saw this years ago and HAD to have my own from this company. I have the set of three. I love them and I will have them until I die. Such important candles. Just beautiful.
Those were popular in the 1970's. They were actually very hard to keep burning. When I visited Hawaii in the 90's, there were open shops which made these candles as customers watched. I got the idea they used regular Crayons for color so I had the idea the wax had to have special ingredients for it to be maleable and maybe that was why it was so hard to keep one of these candles lit.
I thought I recognized these candles! My mom is initially from Holland MI and we used to go there once a year. She must've bought one a long time ago and it's stuck in my childhood memories.
I live these candles so much! There's no wasting of the extra wax and I love the mushroom candle from the leftover drippings! It's so beautiful and she is so skilled!
I could watch this all day! Would even like to try to carve a candle myself if getting the chance sometime, just to see what it’s like to work with. My grandmother and her partner had a carved candle at home, but I think her partners daughter brought the candle home or it just got thrown out when my grandmother moved to an apartment sometime after her partner died (the house was just too big for her to manage alone, and it was her partners childhood home which became his daughters house when he passed, my grandmother and her partner were not married) I always admired that candle anyways, and should I ever visit Netherlands other than a flight transit in Amsterdam, I’d most definitely try to find a shop that sells carved candles as I’d love to have one of those wonderful candles at home as decoration
Don't know why a 4-year-old video appeared on my recs, but I remember these sorts of candles being made at the Renaissance Faire I used to go to every year since I was something like 10 or 11. These were a common thing to be seen, right alongside pewter tankards, leather pouches, flower garlands, handmade soaps, and huge turkey legs. Never bought one, because I tended to want things that were wearable and made it possible for me to feel like I fit in at Faire (why yes, I was a theatre and art kid in high school!), but I always kept it on my list of things I wanted until the year the Faire had to move sites, and the candlemakers stopped attending, as did so many folks.
I actually watched a lady make one of these types of Candles in a mall at Christmas time I was 18 at the time and the mall is no longer there but it a tradition every year to go and watch this lady then her daughter and son come and make them. Wish I could do this now and sell them online
I’ve got a laser pointer temperature gauge for my pool, grill, etc. I was really surprised to learn that the wax closest to the flame can get as high as 500 degrees after monitoring for a while. So, I stopped messing with candle wax; it made sense why I had been burned before by screwing with it. But hey, pour it all over your sexual partners body lol 😅
I can’t tell you how old I feel right now, I used to dip and carve candles this back in the 1970s when I was a teenager! I made one for my Grandma and she refused to light it, not even during the Great Blackout of 77 in NYC!
There used to be a candle shop in St. Augustine, Florida that did this. Yours would order your custom candle, do some shopping and then return to pick up your candle. They are beautiful.
i really loved how detailed and beautifully made the carved candles are in this video! however, i do wonder if the intricate designs take away from the simplicity that candles can bring to a space. sometimes, less is more, right?

Thats exactly what i would do lmao i just left this comment
After u but it every time- pour out the middle! Then the tea light can go to the bottom and glow up the whole thing. ❤
Apparently if you light them, only the wax core will melt and you’ll be left with a beautiful shell.

Simple once you have practiced.
You start out practicing on all white so you can melt your mistakes and try again.
F Huber have you actually done the craft? Most things that look easy are actually quite hard
@@ineedmoresleep3728 keywords: once you have practice.
Makes sense, practice makes perfect and why waste the wax when done practicing

Candle making requires a lot of hard work . This looks so cool
it's hot because it's on fire

This is quite the art.. I wonder how many people could just sit down and craft such a masterpiece..
I would never use mine lol, I wouldn't burn it because it looks too good and probably costs too much as well.
They aren't all that expensive. Some scented candles cost more per oz of wax.
I'd say light it once, and once it's hollow replace the wick with a light of some kind
about 40 dollars
I did that and after time the candle was ruined. It faded and got dusty. Hard to keep clean.
I got a nice 20cm one off ebay for a tenner.
Holland House Candles is still in business! After watching this with my kids, we had a Christmas Candle made for my wife. We light it every year... we love it!
Have you ever been there? My mother takes my children at least once a summer.. you can even watch them make wooden shoes :p

this is better than the soap cutting videos
In 15 minutes she did that?
TEACH ME YOUR WAYS.
In the world we live in now full of minimalistic designs such detailed craftsmanship is quite refreshing.
My wedding unity candle trio was made like this 20 yrs ago. All white and very detailed. Very interesting how it was made. Loved the video!!
Oh my God......Such a beautiful work of art!
Why is this so satisfying to watch….
I loved waking up and eating my breakfast to this show
Now if bath and body works had candles like these , they would be worth the money👍
Bruh I'm sayin like $24.50 for a plain 3-wick candle?

That is so satisfyingly awesome to see how its made.
Carved candles are gorgeous. There was a store in Dingman ferry pa that did this. Your artist is very talented
Hypnotic watching the process, then amazing finished product!
I've been thinking about and watching this video since my childhood, likely around the time that this was produced (not uploaded). It never gets old.
I bought one of these for my mom a couple years ago. They're pretty cool in person

So, 9 months late, but this is at the Dutch Village in Holland, MICHIGAN, not Holland the country. Just to save you an international disappointment.

I'm shocked by how easy it looks. Just another example of how you can get an amazing effect with a simple method when it comes to art.
These became popular in the 70's when i had my first place as a teen. Had to gave one!
Such a beautiful work of art! ❤
Its the most beautiful candle. I love the flower and bird carvings.

Hey does anybody else like to dip their finger in the candles after you blow out the flame?
I do its just really satisfying
Be careful. If the wax hardens around your finger you become a candle and people can legally set you on fire.
