  • Kowdhi is a hand quilting technique with origins in Karnataka region of India. India Quilt Festival brings you this Video from BuDa Folklore, a Honnavar based centre which works on preserving and documenting local culture. You can also learn Kowdhi Quilting from expert artisan, Nirmala Akka during the India Quilt Festival 2019.

    Beautiful!!!! I'm just now learning about these beautiful quilts and I'm making a small sampler as inspiration for a future larger quilt. I know the tradition of placing the triangles in each of the four corners of the quilt, but what are those tiny white things they're placing inside of the block? Is it some sort of prayer? Thank you for sharing this video. It's so inspiring. Cheers from sunny FL. 😀

      I read somewhere that they place rice in the middle square, not sure if it is cooked or raw rice. It could be related to the fact that when a quilt is given to the recipient, it is given with the gesture of "hotte thumbisodu" which in Kannada, (my) the language of Karnataka, means "to fill the stomach/may you be well fed".
