  • Unless you own a public block of IPs there are certain ranges you should be using inside your network. These are called RFC 1918 IPs. Check it out: datatracker.ie...

    I used to work for an organization that assigned static public IPs to workstations. The org was huge and was probably allocated their /16 at the beginning of the Internet. The org managed the whole network. routing and firewalling happened at the head. Each sector was assigned an IP range within the /16 and subnetted. They also had their own routers and firewalls.

      I've run into a couple orgs like this and they are changing as quick as they can.

      I wonder if the big universities used to do this

      I worked at a big hospital that was this way as well. Every computer had its own unique public IP, and eventually we had to re-IP. It's bonkers to think about it today.

    Nice video Willie. I've tried explaining those non-routable addresses, but I think I lost a lot of people on that topic.

    Howie, I don't know... This seems such a basic fundamental of network design. Who is doing this? It seems like it would be techs who used brain dumps to pass exams instead of learning the material. This is so basic. Thanks for the video to hopefully stop some of these people from messing up routing.

      Think about the shortcuts people who aren't mechanics use to fix cars...

    Only thing to add to anyone reconfiguring their home network would be dont use the default schemes either if you're setting it up - especially if you dont control your work network. So many work networks on 192.168.1.x and 10.1.1.x that once you start getting (especially mac endpoints) you end up with annoying routing issues if working with a VPN.
    This is becoming less of an issue with more modern AVD/zero trust implementations that separate all of that but can potentially save yourself some headache down the line if you make it more unique within the RFC.

      With proper corporate VPN setup this is a non issue.

    Isn't your wan ip the only thing that matters. You can use what ever on your internal lan.

    • @WillieHowe
      @WillieHowe  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. Only use rfc addresses internally unless you own the public IPs.
