This whole 'trans women have period cramps' debacle really shows how little the average person understands about periods. The fact that a significant amount of people do not understand period cramps come from the uterus contracting to expel the uterine wall is insane. It's not a tummy ache, it's the uterus, which transwomen don't have.

    • @BriannaHall-ql6ni

Ultimately however, it is hormonal cramps. All genders can receive hormonal cramps, but only anatomical women can menstruate. The topic is misrepresented by the speaker as they are not knowledgeable enough to understand the difference. Also, when estrogenic hormones are introduced into a anatomical males body, they are more likely to develop hormonal cramps.

    Some facts about period pain:
The uterus produces a chemical called "prostaglandin" which makes the uterus contract. Higher prostaglandin levels = higher contractions of the uterus = more pain.
The contractions can also put pressure on blood vessels around the uterus, interrupting the blood and oxygen supply to the muscles of the uterus.
Less oxygen = build up of lactic acid which causes pain (Anyone who had a intense workout will know what I mean with that.)
Knowing this, can trans women have period cramps? I think not.
    Edit.
If you're a Trans Women and experience what you think are period cramps, I would highly suggest to go to the doctor asap. Another thing that is in your belly area that hurts like hell is the impending doom of your appendix.

I think Destiny navigated the first topic really well, but I think he could have asked something like what if a trans woman tweeted something like "I'm pregnant, I'm so happy!" Would the other guy still be arguing "Hey lets just wait on the science and the body is really weird and complicated!"
On the birthing person topic, if I understood Destiny's argument correctly, I think a good example to bring up would have been what happened at Evergreen College. Where it's one thing for black people to excuse themselves for the day in order to protest, but its a very different thing to demand white people not attend class on a certain day. Similarly, its one thing for a trans person to choose their own pronouns but quite another to start demanding other people change the words they use to describe themselves.

As a former competitive bodybuilder and current trt user, most exogenous hormones are scheduled or administered with the goal of having the least amount of hormone fluctuations as possible. Mostly because, for males, when testosterone goes up, the estrogen tends to as well. Basically side effects tend to be worse with bigger spikes in hormones. Big spikes in either testosterone or estrogen can be bad, so I highly doubt these individuals are experiencing massive spikes, unless they’re not using a doctor and taking it upon themselves. Regardless, even with spikes, you’re not going to have “pain” coming from an organ that isn’t there…

There are many women like myself who have been overwhelmingly supportive of trans women all along, happy for them that they could join us (because being a woman is awesome ;)), who now feel very confused by the "period" cramps and "menstruation" thing. Anyone pushing this, trans or cis, whether they mean well or not, is actively harming the trans community by making them look insane. You don't have to have every single thing a biological female has. Stop it. That's point A.
Point B is that there is also a growing sense of betrayal among these same set of welcoming women, to varying degrees, about things like trans women athletes elbowing their way unfairly into professional women's sports before any inroads were even being made to address the bone and muscle density problems, with some then claiming as a response "well, guess you ladies need to step up your game, pussies," to these very same women athletes who did and do support them, but find this unfair (same thing with the activists who just want to get rid of women's sports. Um..what?).
Or things like refusing to acknowledge there is a huge problem with women's prisons when predators lie about being trans to be housed with women who they subsequently rape, and the response by many in the trans community was at first flat out denial that this was a thing, until the pregnancies, and then it was, "we'll just give all women prisoners birth control pills, pregnancy problem solved." Um..ok, the pregnancy situation solved, we guess, but what about the rapes..? Dead air. That's some cold shit, ngl.
Then it was birthing persons, or persons who menstruate (ironic since that is what is being desired now to the point of delusion), but not woman, a thing that means a great deal to so so many. The gender so earnestly wanted to be seen as now being reduced to an automaton thing. Trans women find it cringe when cis people reduce them to their body parts, yet how is this not the same thing.
All of this is a slap in the face to the women that wanted to happily build trans women up, since they are now seeing many of those very same trans women seemingly tearing them down.
Yet, if we voice concern over any of this we're transphobic.
Well, I'm not transphobic. In fact, we are the proud parents of two wonderful trans boys (and, as for the women's sports stuff, we are also the proud parents of two athlete daughters as well, our eldest a coach of a boys team, even, and they think it aucks to see the thing that brings them such joy thrown on the chopping block. If it's so irrelevant, why are you trying so hard to be in it?)
Point C is nclusivity is great, but if one were looking from the outside in, this wouldn't look like inclusivity, where we are all a part of something; this would look a group trying to be more powerful than another group. I think we're allowed to be salty about the sheer disrespect, but more than that it is so frustrating to not even being able to address any concern without being screamed a transphobe. And all from the silence is violence crowd. That's the galling rub too.
Well, aorry I'm not aorry for talking about it.
And standard disclaimer: I don't mean everyone believes this or acts this way, of course, and I don't mean you if this doesn't apply to you, of course. Promise.

Excess Oestrogen production occuring in males is already a known phenomenon and leads to a totally different kind of outcome in males. Specifically, one of the most prominent is painful swelling of breasts called Gynaecomastia.
Others are erectile dysfunction and infertility which arent necessarily concerns that matter to trans women.
They may experience delayed puberty which they desire, however it also can lead to short stature and low libido which may not be desirable.
Documented occurrence of cramps in these cases are not existent.
Males with higher oestrogen and who don't have a uterus don't experience those cramps.
It's not wrong to narrow down the cause of these cramps and tie down the occurrence to the presence of a uterus.
Furthermore, there is certainly evidence of medications and procedures specifically targeted towards the uterus to alleviate cramps.

I'm now 52 and my periods are so long and heavy, because I'm entering menopause, that I've had a Mirena inserted to stop the flow. Men don't know what the hell a period is and what women suffer from our entire adult lives. Whatever "pain" they are getting is because they are getting negative side effects from taking estrogen, which is not a male's natural hormone, so it makes their intestines contract. They dont have any of the other hormones that are needed for a cycle (LH = lutenising hormone..progesterone...FSH = follicle stimulating hormone). They don't know what period pain even is. Lupron and other "Puberty blockers" ravage your bone density. Those "period cramps" are a result of a significant reduction in bone density which often leads to a curve in the lumbar spine. Additionally, high levels of estrogen are commonly associated with low bone density in Biological males. Your bones are under a lot of tension from your muscles so reducing bone density has painful and potentially catastrophic implications.

We shouldn't be so quick to dismiss people. Especially when talking about complicated subjects. Clearly, it's dumb to think that trans women are having periods, but it's important to know how that thought manifests. How many people could counter that argument well before Destiny gave his take? Probably a lot, but still. That tweet had almost 100k upvotes. It's good to know why.
I'm more sympathetic to the birthing person's argument though. There are exceptions where it's useful, and there's a nuanced discussion to be had about the inclusion of trans women in women's spaces.

Which is why I think the whole non-binary phenomenon came into play, because it’s way to essentially ‘bypass’ that acceptance hurtle, because now you can claim gender is a spectrum (another social construct honestly), and that stereotypes exhibited by this one transgender person are really for anyone to exhibit.
