The last of the Sinnoh Fusion Ensemble videos, yay! And I'm happy to be ending off on this tune. After ascending Mt. Coronet, we've finally made it to the intense Spear Pillar to battle against Dialga & Palkia at the climax of the journey through the Sinnoh region. What a crazy moment this is to experience in game.
Onto the song itself! When I was arranging this, I knew I wanted to include both the Spear Pillar theme and the Dialga Palkia battle theme, since they're really closely intertwined. I had this crazy idea to go full on metal chug with Spear Pillar... and oh my gosh it turned out so well. Whenever this band has played Spear Pillar live, people are always so so so surprised by how hard it rocks (and the fact that it's a jazz ensemble doing it!). I also wanted to incorporate some weird, aleatoric out of time stuff into this arrangement, which is what the first 50 seconds or so of this arrangement are. Check out the notation I used for it, it's pretty crazy! There are three big hits during that 50 second duration (which you can see me conducting in the video), intended to represent the three beings of time, space, and distortion making their way to Spear Pillar! (There are also literal explosion samples in the mix layered in to add some beefiness haha, they're mixed pretty low though.) I tried actually sampling the cries of Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, but I wouldn't be able to use them in the audio due to licensing restrictions. Instead, I had the horns play a really slow version of the Spear Pillar motif, and follow it with multiphonics / random notes.
Spear Pillar also has a few secrets hidden too! The section at 1:34 uses the chord progression during the "chorus" of Mt. Coronet, intended as an allusion to the journey you had to take as a player before getting to the summit! Additionally, the piano is playing a transposed version of the opening piano bit from the Battle Dialga / Palkia theme. Lots of references to the past and future crammed in there! The trumpet solo that follows it is honestly one of my favorite solos ever... we had some pedals set up running through that EV RE-20 mic you see in the vid, but I ended up "re-affecting" it in post with some delay, auto-wah, and pitch shift. With the wah and pitch effects, the solo kind of sounds like some distorted Pokémon crying out or something... maybe one of the three deities?

Oooh, let's see what each of them would play! I think Cyrus is either a drummer or a lead guitarist, because he's super serious but also super skilled and organized. Mars is probably a bassist, Jupiter i think would be like a rhythm guitar player or something. Saturn has gotta be a horn player..

For what it’s worth the lineup in my head goes something like:
Cyrus: drums. Drums are the heartbeat that holds the music together, much like how Cyrus is the one holding his team together.
Mars: electric/bass guitar. I always think of Mars as being fiery and sassy, so I think a loud, rocking guitar would suit her nicely.
Saturn: violin or piano. Saturn’s the calm intellectual and I think those instruments fit that personality type.
Jupiter: saxophone. Honestly I can’t picture her playing any instrument, but the sax guys in the video look like they’re having fun.
Grunts: everything else, of course!

When the first notes of the piano played for the Palkia/Dialga Battle theme, it shook me for the sole reason that as a kid I fought Palkia and felt that energy of intimidation and cool design that I loved. Every single music from generation 4 has an impact on me for some reason, probably due to nostalgia.
Those first few piano notes allllways get me going, haha!

If the later part of this is the Dialga/Palkia fight, I like to imagine the slowing down at 6:00 is when you finally have then low enough to throw a Pokeball, and victory is yours. BUT WAIT, THEY BROKE OUT! And then all those frantic hits at the end is chucking ball after ball after ball until finally, that random net ball seals the deal at the end of the song

I was going to listen to this walking home from an audition, but heard the first 10 seconds and knew my crappy earbuds wouldn't do it justice. Finally was able to hear it in its full quality, and I'm so glad I waited. This is truly fantastic; I was jamming hard nonstop.
Haha yeah, this isn't exactly just a "listen in the background" type of song... it's a bit more crazy and programmatic than that!
Hearing the transition to the battle theme at 3:02 just made me melt, thank you for this beautiful remaster!

This is probably the most slept on song on the Sinnoh track yet its SO AMAZING. Spear pillar sends chills down my spine. That trumpet solo was perfect.

This entire #yearofsinnoh has been INCREDIBLE- every cover has been a masterpiece and it’s been super nostalgic listening to them, bonus points for putting your own spin on each of them and making them feel fresher than ever before. Yeah, it’s part of both pieces. It’s like how they use the lake cavern theme as a leitmotif near the final section of the Uxie/Mesprit/Azelf battle theme-I guess it unifies the pre-battle and battle themes together as a related pair of songs in sequence.
Why don’t they just hire all of you to make the diamond and pearl remake music!?

I love the original with how barren the orchestration is (my favourite instrument of the original is the wind blowing). I know that part of the song isn't something you could realistically do in TH-cam, blending it with the legendary battle theme was genius! Shout out to every one involved, this one was a specially awesome treat! I can imagine this song going over an animation of the player, reaching the pillar, battling the legendary and, just as he caught, Giratina appearing and the song ending as MC prepares for another battle.

I've always loved how this arrangements came when cosmic eclipse hit the tcg and playing the ADP deck while listening to this was pure delight

This just brings me back to my 1000s of hours in brawl with my brother even more so then my Pokémon diamond and pearl time.
This is very nice. The beginning is just phenomenal, all the structure and chaos in the noise. Those bongos in the second piece had me full of energy too lol.

Maybe it's nostalgia from playing Pearl late at night under the covers, but that sudden jump into Palkia/Dialga Fight is one of the coolest transitions I've heard

And man, you didn’t disappoint! That intro was one of the greatest feats of Pokémon covers I’ve ever witnessed (I LOVE how you guys imitated the Pokémon cries at 0:40!!!), those trumpet solo effects were unlike anything I’ve ever heard before, and of course you can’t go wrong with Battle! Vs. Dialga/Palkia!
As I said, I’ve been waiting with so much anticipation for your cover of Spear Pillar (even before the Year of Sinnoh), and I’m so satisfied with the results!
