    As a kid in the 90s, I was sent through all sorts of tests for cramps and stomach pain. I was taking medicine to help me poop soilds and other things. Xrays, ultrasounds, needles, pills, even camera down my throat while under 10 years old. I was yelled at by a few doctors that I was faking for attention. Saying I have a disorder that I seek attention by faking being ill. One doctor yelled at me in anger with his face a few inches from mine saying I was a liar. My asthma doctor did an allergy test and found that I am lactose intolerant. A simple skin test solved everything. What doctor yells at a kid like that?

      I had a similar situation as a child... however I never had a doctor yell at me. How awful! Isn't it nice now that we know the truth! :)

      I had a similar situation too as a young child... I’m so sorry for you. I’ve eliminated dairy and meat from my diet and have never had that kind of stomach problem again... we need the world to know!!

      There are some doctors that fundamentally misunderstand what medicine is. Some think that there are these things called diseases with exact descriptions...and that never vary from individual to individual. Then they believe that the medical books have "the treatment" which will be tolerated by and cure EVERY patient if only the patient follows instructions. These types of folks that go into medicine, and who are very much authority based thinkers, often react with confusion and anger....when an illness does not exactly follow the textbook. They have difficulties when the line between illness and health is NOT a clean line with a clear gap between either state.
      We need doctors that blame the patient when an illness does not follow a given textbook pattern...out of the profession. I am very sorry they took their confusion, frustration and anger out on you. That should never have happened.
      I also see this fantasy of "the right answer" among patients. Of COURSE doctors have the right answer, but they just are not giving it to patients to make MORE money for themselves or big pharma....these authority based thinkers decide. Actually more often than not....doctors do NOT have the perfect answer. What we do hope to have is an idea of what has been tried before that has helped many folks. We offer ...if that seems to have good odds of helping...that treatment choice. We weigh something called the risk (of surgery and or meds) vs the potential benefits ....and try to make an informed decision. It is that thinking process which is why folks are told to SEE a doctor instead of just reading a possible course of action from the internet. A doc is supposed to look at the available plans, rule out those that turned out to be more harmful than good, and then present the remaining choices to the patient for the patient to help decide.
      Parents need to watch how doctors talk to and deal with child patients. I hope your family picked a different physician.
      Granted some children ....and adults....do fake illness to avoid school, work or other responsibilities. As no doctor can read minds, nor is perfect, there will always be mistakes made re calling someone who is ill....a likely faker. My apologies to the patients harmed by this type of error.

    To fight stage 4 lung cancer I made 39 diet and lifestyle changes. No refined sugar was 1st change. Given 3 months to live in feb 2017. Today happily tumourfreetim

      oh same! my bloating dropped significantly. I never actually liked milk in the first place but all other foods with dairy in them like butter and cheese were favorites. luckily, I reaped the benefits of quitting

      I’ve been trying to cut dairy from my diet but it’s _hard!_ I know humans (especially adults) aren’t supposed to be drinking milk except from their mothers, so I’m not surprised it has all of these negative effects on us.

    God, health industries have been telling us this for years. You don’t need this much of this food, need more of this one. We don’t listen to this. We listen to things told by uneducated parents “lots of milk makes healthy bones”. That’s a very old saying. However, a lot of milk back then isn’t nearly as much as a lot of milk now.

      Well, sadly it is not just "uneducated parents" but the victims of marketing from the dairy industry. Seriously, the dairy industry mad the entire milk=strong bones campaign. AAAND they give financial support to many healthcare institutions, etc... who then perpetuate the myth. It's disturbing how much influence companies have in the health industry... and used all for money, not for the health of the people.

    So, I had stomach pain for most of my life. I was used to it, living with it. Until I went vegan for a month and the pain was gone. I talked about it with a friend and she suggested it was the milk (I used to have lots of milk everyday, hey it’s good for us right?). I introduced everything back in my diet, except the milk, and I haven’t had a stomach pain since.

      I had the same experience. Went vegan, stopped having what I call "stomach attacks." When I was pregnant I legit could not control the dairy craving so I started eating cheese little by little. Now I'm a pescatarian but I still won't drink dairy milk or eat sauces/soups/etc. made with whole milk or cream of any sort. If I want alfredo, I make it with almond milk. I still feel good. It's amazing what just limiting certain foods can do for your digestion and overall comfort.

      i always have a lactaid pill (aka lactase) before eating cheese too. it's literally just dosing yourself with the enzyme required to digest lactose which most humans don't produce much of. helps sooo much.
      i can't tell you how relieved i was when i discovered those. just thinking of all the hours i no longer waste crying in front of the toilet in the fetal position after a dinner out 😂

      I only recently found out that 65% of adults are lactose intolerant to varying degrees. Cutting out dairy is a good first step to any stomach issues, but damn I love me some cheese.

      UUHH.... IDK MAN. Everyone I talk to about our daily diet agrees moderation is better than restriction. On one side: Sugar is addictive plain and simple, to avoid it would be unrealistic in the long term. On the other hand, moderating how much you consume keeps you at least a little bit satisfied so you dont binge when you've lost control. And losing control for a human being is inevitable, especially when you are bombarded on a daily basis by the thing you are trying to "avoid".

    I was on Singulair and Flonaise until I was around 13 and once I stopped drinking milk I no longer had "allergy" symptoms and could stop the medications. Turns out I have dairy sensitivity anyways.

    I hv been on antihistamine for years for hay fever n now I'm symptom free after cutting off dairy n sugar for 1yr .

      I stopped eating red meat and am only consuming minimal amounts of dairy and my extremely heavy allergies suddenly almost completely vanish after a year. Every time I do eat meat or drink milk though, they’re back for weeks after that. It took me a while to make the connection because the “effect” of those foods is delayed by a couple of days but I’m so glad I ultimately did.

    My niece was obsessed with cheese as a very young child, it was one of the first words she learnt.
    She always looked so cute when she did her one word request with her pleading eyes and broadly accentuated with the pronunciation of extended ‘eeee’ smile.
    But she was having a difficult time with constant sinus infections that caused her breathing problems and bad breath.
    She was given antibiotics, but the infections kept coming back.
    Until one day she decided that she no longer liked cheese or milk or butter.
    She was only four at the time, though even at that young an age once she decided something that was that - there was no convincing her.
    She was right to reject dairy though, soon after her sinuses cleared up and she has never had a problem since.
    I guess she had an-unconscious understanding of what was harming her.

      My son has a casein allergy and he will vomit, cough up mucus, develop a rash, etc if given any dairy. I read that a majority of the population is actually allergic to milk.

    Thank you for this. Since going vegan about a year ago I have completely changed my view on how medicine is given. I truly believe we medicate the symptoms and not the cause. This is a threat way to package it!

      That's simply fact. There is no medication that cures a disease. There are antibiotics that clear infections (at a great cost), but that is as close as it gets.

      You are dead on. My doctor was willing to give me more medicine to treat the side effects of one of the medications I was taking. I didn't accept the offer and told him why. I was happy when he accepted my reasons.

    Thank you for your talk. I don't even like the taste of cow's milk ( but love almond milk) but cheese and butter kept comming back into my eating. I haven't eaten meat most of my life.I am older and my stomach is really starting to bother me. I think on July 4th I will quit dairy altogether.

      Dairy farmers need to transition to a better industry! Stealing the baby food from calves is wrong and very dangerous for humans. So is eating the flesh or secretions of any animal. Humans are designed to eat plants and plants ONLY!

    I learned so much from this DOCTOR, an authentic HEALER!
    Why so few views of one of the most informative talks about the damage to our health ftom milk and sugar (cookies)?
    It is a shame the biases of viewers results in a lack of transmission of key knowledge to improve their child's health to parents.
    Who knows milk has a neutral pH about 7 in your fridge, but if it warms to room temperature becomes much more acidic, which makes it more likely to induce acid reflux?
    I do, after watching this highly educational TEDx.

    My son was perfectly healthy, beautiful baby. Before he was a full year old, he was getting ear infections every two weeks, which sent his temperature soaring, and he went in to a gran mal seizure that would not stop. We rushed to the hospital, and they could not stop it for a very long time. Doctor doing math on the bed linens to figure out how much valium to give an 11 month old. It was horrible. Well, we went through months, taking that poor child to doctors all over the place, and he was prescribed anti-seizure meds because he kept getting ear infections and seizures. The anti-seizure meds put him in a stupor and he stopped learning how to talk.
    Finally, we drove all the way to Ohio to see an osteopath. She said, "Stop giving him milk. Give him soy milk or something else." We stopped giving him milk....he stopped getting ear infections, stopped having seizures. Within 3 months he was talking and developing naturally. Milk does NOT do your body good.

    People are eating "normally" (ie., like everybody else) and having diet-related illnesses left and right, and instead of changing the diet we have normalized having diet-related illness. People think normal is okay; if they eat like everybody else, that's just fine. But it's not. The way we eat is abnormal and we need to reevaluate what normal really is.
    I cut out almost all sugar, a lot of carbs and most dairy because I have chronic sinusitis that is extremely triggered by sugar. I was amazed at how, over time, I've reframed what foods are normal. I used to think eating sugar was totally normal, and now I'm adapted to a life without it and I realize that our bodies were just never adapted to process this much sugar, especially refined sugar.
    It's amazing to me when I see how other people are eating, the amount of calories and carbs and sugar. I don't comment on it because it's not my business, but it really stands out.

    I am Filipino and we commute daily to get to our destinations. And we talk a lot about anything while in those public transports. One time I overheard an old woman responding to moms discussion on why their kids were sickly. And this old dodging woman commented that it's the milk the kids consume on a daily basis. And this was in rural Philippines and in the 70s. Wow... she got it right all along.

      Mostly it is. But it's more complicated in small children who naturally would be breastfed until about two or three years old, but that rarely happens in our society because it's really complicated for working moms and also considered not normal. So when a child ist weaned at let's say seven months, he or she still needs the nutrients. In this case midwives here in Germany recommend cows milk as it's better than no milk at all.

      People are different. I consume milk and so and it never caused me any problems. In fact, drinking a glass of milk even helps me when I have a sore stomach after eating too much sugar...
      Of course if you drink two litres of milk every day it's an other story.

    My child doesn’t have any dairy, nor did she as a toddler. She has a chronic stuffy nose and she gets acid reflux. I don’t think it’s the milk and cookies per se that caused the stomach pain. I think it’s eating late and then lying down to sleep. So we cut out any snacks after dinner and that has so far solved the problem.

      Yes, I also wonder this. In med school, they taught us that acid reflux can often be avoided by not resting horizontally after meals. I wonder if she considered this as the main culprit or if the research controls for consuming dairy/sugar at night.

      They're still sick during the day when they are upright, it's just more exacerbated at night after a bed time snack/drink. Nothing is lost by limiting sugar and dairy intake. For those patients with these symptoms and habits, their health may be improved. Worth the try, and certainly worth more testing.

    Dr Wei needs to follow some classes on organic chemistry and microbiology. Lactose in dairy ferments to lactic acid. Consuming fermented dairy like yoghurt or buttermilk doesn't cause acid reflux in healthy individuals. The fermentation of sugars into alcohol happens anaerobically, while the oxidation of alcohol into acetic acid happens aerobically. Both conditions cannot exist within the stomach at the same time. The conversion of sugar into lactic acid that occurs in the mouth is done by Streptococcus sorbrinus and S. mutants. Neither will be very active at the pH levels within the human stomach. The acid reflux she describes is simply a caused by the increased production of stomach acid after consuming a meal, the horizontal sleeping position, and the short oesophagus in children.

    I did three really important things for my disease prevention and overall wellness:
    - I stopped chronically breathing through my mouth...big no-no, huge no-no, partly because the nose is the frontline of defense for the immune system!
    - I started using the BreatheEasy Lung Exerciser for inhalation and exhalation breathing therapy
    - and I sleep with a small piece of tape over my lips to keep my mouth closed during sleep...stops snoring, apnea, dry mouth and more
    My chronic fatigue and asthma both are gone now and my outlook on life is exceptional because I’m sleeping better and have more energy. I’m 54.

    My wife had athsma for 45 years then, after ditching dairy, it was gone. She is so annoyed that no doctor ever raised the issue of dairy. Doctors need to be trained on nutrition.

    I follow the science concerning dairy foods. Numerous research studies strongly indicate that dairy consumption is extremely unhealthy and should be avoided. It is advisable to stop consuming milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. Michael Greger in his book "How Not to Die" has summarized much of the research in this area.

      Yogurt is actually very healthful IF it does not contain too much added sugar. Yogurt is a probiotic, because it contains good live bacterias for your gut that could reduce inflammation, decrease insulin resistance, and prevent type 2 diabetes. The key is to avoid buying yougurt that has a lot of sugar and junk in the ingredients. It is best to buy "Greek" yogurt, add your own pieces of fruits, nuts, and take control of how much sweetener you put into the yogurt to make it more tasty.

    Read the labels. I found out that the cream I was buying had sugar added to it. Some really basic info and changes weren’t difficult at all. Sugar is in a LOT of food and we don’t even know because we shop passively.

    Excellent advice - addiction is the root cause of a lot of modern humanistic societies and that even include foods (to be more specific - the food components). Definition of addiction - too much of anything is never good!

    My dad was a doctor and he discourage us as children from snacking. It was 3 square meals, nothing in between. If we really felt hungry, we could always help ourselves to a sandwich, but that rarely happened because we were too busy playing outdoors. We all grew up slim, no allergies, no chronic infections. This is despite drinking nothing but milk and sodas (we didn't like the taste of plain water). But Dr Wei has a good point.

    This is anecdotal evidence. That doesn’t mean she’s wrong, she just need needs to present strong evidence that this is true. It could just be a correlation.
    (My kids both drink a lot of milk and never have congestion or allergy symptoms)

      The good news is - once you stoped for a while, like 10 days or so - your taste changes and you cant even imagine eating the same things you eated before - coz they are just too sweet for you now! And a little pro tips - if you lack good carbs you will crave sugar. So make a deal with yourself - "Im alowed to eat this candy bar if I still want to, but only after I had my nice protein and carbs rich meal." - it helps a lot. Also - drinking water when you start craving sweets - it fresh up your system and gives you boost of energy. And lastly - sweet potatoes. - for the times you really need something sweet :D good luck.

      It is hard, but it is doable. The first 3 days are like kicking a drug, because that is what you are doing. Get it out of the house, don’t buy it, and know that a craving peaks after 10 minutes. You can endure 10 minutes. Distract yourself, find support groups. It’s your life you are saving.

    I can confirm this is true. I was suffering a lot of terrible IBS symptoms and other problems. I cut sugar almost completely out of my diet, and most of the terrible symptoms i was having subsidised. I still drink dairy however not as much.

    Please keep in mind that Dr. Wei is talking about preschool children, even infants, who mostly do not choose what they eat and drink. It is important that parents know and get the message. How many of you read food labels, particularly of baby food and drinks? People are aware of fat but think that being aware of carbohydrates is only for diabetics! It is common to see children consuming half a pound of sugar everyday. Wait until you see them developing chronic diseases when they become adults!

Yes, I do not trust any of these moneymaking foodproducers and I have good reasons for that. When not either the medical doctors care the least I must be maximal aware myself.

    I've had this cough for at least 5 months that refuses to go away. Every night and sometimes in the morning, my lungs fill with mucus and I cough for an hour. I went to the doctor who shrugged off the cough as if were nothing. I called the doctor's office to complain about the cough and they told me to see a pulmonologist. I went to urgent Care and they took x-rays and gave me antibiotics and could not solve the issue. I found that my nightly ice cream desserts exacerbated the cough. I believe that you have brought light to the root of my issue, Dr. Wei. Thank you! I will cut down on dairy and sugar and see how that works.

    I spent my childhood as a bed wetter, nightmare ridden, vomiting, tantrums and either diarrhea or constipation, runny nose, tinnitus and rashes. I was also forced to drink milk, and was heavily addicted to sugar. I had an untreated psychotic break at summer camp, where the only things they fed us were allergens. I ate wonder bread filled with margarine and sugar, Mac and cheese and hot dogs. In that time in the US, food was never considered as the problem for anything. I spent time with a shrink, who couldn’t help, doctors who couldn’t do anything and it wasn’t until the 60’s hanging out in a hippie commune that I discovered organic food and began to feel better.

    I ignored my lactose intolerance up until a couple years ago when it got so bad i got esophagatitis. From then on i learned to listen to my body. Years of eating things i was sensitive to left me with horrible acid reflux.

    Boy I bet pharmaceutical companies hate her! Thanks for speaking up. Every member of my family has experienced this at some point. Before I knew better I’d wake up in the middle of the night after a rich meal of carbs/sugar and throw up or come very closer to it. I no longer eat that way and when I do I definitely pay for it. As a kid & teen I was diagnosed with “IBS”. Now I know better and preach the reflux issue to anyone who will listen. It affects so many other issues in our body.

    Sadly I discovered this too late for myself at 18, my parents just wanted me to be happy in the moment so they didn't restrict sugar, if I knew sugar made me dumber and shortened my life I would have stopped it earlier

Sometimes it doesn't take science to figure out how to cure a medical issue, it just takes commoin sense and reputable and caring health professionals who are willing to take the time and put in the effort.     I had incessant ear infections in my 30's. I went to several doctors and one quack allergist. Finally I got a wild hair and eliminated milk from my diet. My ear infections disappeared immediately. I still eat dairy, BTW, but only yogurt.

      Coz you lack love in your life? :D But if you wanna something sweet and fast - try sweet potatoes. You can cook them super fast in the microwave, you dont even need to peal them, just take one, make a few holes with a fork so it wont explode, and put it in the microwave for 10 min. Put some buter or coconut oil and enjoy.

    I have always hated milk. I do like some cheeses but never drank milk after babyhood. Great to find out it was good for me in the long run. Never forced my kids to drink milk once they were weaned either. They hated it too (they gagged when I tried when their pediatrician said it was OK to give them cow's milk).

    When I was a child I got asthma. I always felt that milk made it worse, but at school they always had milk on the side for lunch. Then I ended up getting used to it and just drank it until middle school. For years I would heat everything up because otherwise my throat would hurt and I'd get asthma attacks. Everyone would say including my parents that I needed milk for strong bones and so on, but I just disliked milk and how it made me feel. So once the end of my second year of middle came around I said I wouldn't drink milk anymore no matter what anyone said. The year after my asthma went away, I still got sick with colds but they became less severe and now its been 2 years since I've gotten more than a slight cough. Now I only have milk when I want a tablespoon in my coffee in the morning, the rare occasion of hot chocolate or when a cake recipe requires it.
