Every time she sings I get goosebumps on my goosebumps. She takes you to happy places. There will never be another Liza. They don't make them like that any more. What a gal!

I know people make fun of her a lot but I really like her bubbly on stage presence. It's such a throwback to the vaudeville entertainers who wouldn't be caught dead frowning or playing it cool in front of an audience. Her jubilant energy is contagious more youthful than I expected.

oh I love her too. Met her in 2005 very sweet lady and a lot shorter than I expected. I'm 5'5 and I was quite a bit taller,I'm guessing shes only 5'1 or so. She has a wonderful personality

It is thrilling to see her triumph here, but either she had a cold or her voice is shot through- compare with the brilliant 1991 version where she is on top vocally. Her the voice doesn't seem to respond but her expression / magnetic stage presence see her through to success.

I don't know if it was menopause, alcoholism, smoking, other health issues or what, but it seems like she aged 2 decades between 1992 and 1998. In 6 short years, she went from the top of her game to a shadow of her former self. Her personality nowadays is back to classic Liza, but her voice never rebounded.

She had surgery to remove vocal polyps in Feb. 1997, which resulted in an 18 month hiatus from performing. This is Sept 1998, just after the vocal rest. DVD dub here: th-cam.com/video/Hk5rzQne2qM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=SomeDaysYou%27reBarbra

Added weight, alcohol, and drugs will DEFINETLY affect your singing voice. At least she got out there and captured the character. More rehearsal and the right tempo and she would of made a great Mama Rose. 🙆‍♂️

Thanks. You have to watch this meticulously. She is NOT singing "live". And she is NOT lip syncing either. She "looped" the entire song AFTER the fact. She was not happy with her performance, so she went to the producers and asked if she could go into a recording studio and record over top of what she did. Looping is hard enough just doing a word or phrase. It's EXTREMELY difficult to do for an entire song. My hat goes off to her for doing an excellent job.

Thomas, you are wrong. This is the TV broadcast, BEFORE she over-dubbed her performance before the DVD video. There are uploads on TH-cam of the same performance from the 'My Favorite Broadway: Leading Ladies' DVD and you can hear her more polished dubbed singing. Please don't share misinformation and be more careful in the future. This channel 'Wolfgang's Broadway' has uploaded two videos of Liza performing as this event, this performance of Some People and her performance of Sing Happy. Sing Happy was cut for the DVD and Some People was dubbed. Why you are calling it "looped" is beyond me, and I'm a sound engineer.

    • @thomasmiles340

@@ah7910 Thanks for correcting me. I just assumed this was the DVD version. When actors or singers are unhappy with a performance or need to correct a technical flaw, they go into a sound booth and fix the problem. It might just be a word or phrase. In this case, it was an entire song. This is called looping, and is done after virtually every movie or filmed performance. The bigger question is ----- why are you showing the original, inferior performance, which Miss Minnelli hated and disowned? By the way, you spelled her name wrong in the heading.

    • @ah7910
      @ah7910 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@thomasmiles340 He kindly released one performance of hers called 'Sing Happy' that was omitted from the DVD release. If not for the owner of this TH-cam channel, we would not be seeing these rarities. I assume he has archive footage from the broadcast and has chosen to upload that, unrelated to the production of the DVD release. Why are you being so hostile and not thanking him? Do you ever go back and read your comments? You sound so angry with the world. I'm not sure Liza "hated and disowned" the footage as you suggested she does. She simply asked the producers if she could dub her voice in post-production when they were preparing the DVD release, this footage was released before that DVD existed. You come across as one of those bitter angry people of a certain age-group Thomas, shaking your fist in the air. I'm a video editor, if someone dubs their voice over existing footage, we call it 'dubbing'. I've honestly never heard anybody call dubbing vocals "looping" before. Maybe they called it "looping" during the MGM years? Or maybe you call it looping because you're positively loopy?

This is not the same as the DVD version -- which was obviously dubbed. I wonder why they did that for the DVD. The live version was good. Liza later in life...voice not as sharp...but good!

Carlos Santos I agree totally. I’ve been crazy about Liza since the 60s. With age, and so many health problems, her voice isn’t what it was.
But she’s still the one I want to watch. NEW YORK, NEW YORK became associated with Frank after he did it. But Liza did it first. To me that will always be her song. Her version is the one I prefer...love Frank though I do.

I heard she wasn't happy with how she sounded in the show so she had another version done for the DVD. I like this better. More real.

She probably wasn't too proud of how her belts came out, or rather, struggled to come out. It's all good, we get it, but generally, if you're a singer, you're not gonna want that on a DVD release.
The DVD vocals are of the same era and they're lovely. All I need to know.

Liza is and always has been an entity unto herself and over the course of my entire life I've learned that people either love her or just don't like her. That's their prerogative I guess. Fortunately I for me I've always been a fan. She's done a lot of incredible work over her entire career.
I like this certainly but speaking as a now 62 year old musical arranger and orchestrator for 40+ years that has toured the world in the orchestra pits of four Broadway shows, I have to say hands down that this has got to be by far the worst arrangement and orchestration of the song that any arranger could have possibly come up with, to back up anyone singing this song. Add to it a woefully under-rehearsed and unprepared studio orchestra and you get this god-awful cacophony going on behind one of Broadway's brightest stars of the past 60 years. Had I been the conductor I would have reamed out the arranger and hired someone else to write a new chart, even if it meant that these 25-30 top-flight musicians were reading pages of music on which the ink wasn't even dry yet before they had to perform it on TV.
