    I also unsubscribed from a lot of TH-cam beauty gurus because they all encourage consumption and I don't need a fraction of the stuff they recommend/promote

      Plus it's all sponsored and half the stuff they recommend they never use - like I never believe that any of the stuff in their 'monthly faves' vids are actually bought by them. Who can afford a bag full of designer makeup every month?

    I really love these videos, but it would be awesome to see TFD do more on advice for people who already skimp in a lot of areas. I guess the channel title does imply it's about cutting corners, but when you've grown up money-conscious (read: poor) and already don't buy all this unnecessary stuff, what SHOULD we do with the little money we have?

      Relieved to finally see comments like these. It does feel like TFD is aimed at people who already have a lot of disposable income, but for anyone who has grown up constantly being careful with money, or is struggling at the moment, the videos aren't as relevant as they could be.

    A tip that I use is to not be afraid to return something you don't love and to keep items in returnable condition until you're sure you love it. That way, if you realize you've made an impulsive mistake, you can get your money back. Sephora takes returns on pretty much anything in any condition!

      Christine Grassi yes!!!!! I've learned to do this too! Ive always been scared to return things but I'm like - stuff it - I have the receipt, it's not what I want, I'm taking it back!

      yes this is a great tip! always return if you don't use an item before that return date is up! i had a good friend that was always shopping but she always returned and sold her stuff in turn and i really respected her for that because she had cool and trendy stuff all the time but wasn't excessive about it, and knew the value of her dollar!

      Know the return policy of all stores where you shop. Grocery stores often take returns. Makeup at the drug store is fine too, and many take returns without questions.

    I came to this channel from Vlogbrothers and because I like the style/focus on newly adulting problems. However I'm realizing it's pretty irrelevant to my minimal-spending-but-low-income lifestyle. Does anyone here have suggestions of personal finance TH-cam channels (or podcasts) for someone who has already cut the fat out of her budget?

      Agreed, for the most part. This channel seems to be mostly geared towards people who actually have a fair amount of "spending money," advising them on how to use it more wisely. As someone with a low income, I'm like... you seriously have the *ability* to buy fancy jewelry and clothing?? This is not a choice I face.

    I used to impulse buy lots of books, so I took my credit card off Amazon & subscribed to the public library on top of my university library, I also stopped using my Kindle and I now have a rule that I'm not allowed to buy a book unless I already read it & or it's a reference book for long term use. clothes - that's another long story! found the best way to not buy unwanted clothes is to just buy 1 or 2 items at a time. going out - discovered walks & free exhibits & shows are just as fun & more healthy than going to a restaurant.

    You don't save money by not eating breakfast unless the $/calorie you spend on breakfast foods is higher than the average $/calorie you spend on snacks, lunch, and dinner. You're not going to magically not need your 2000 or whatever calories just because you decide you don't want cereal, you're just going to make up for it by eating more later. Or you'll be hungry and lose weight until your body no longer needs those calories.
    Sorry, but that point was basically bullshit. You can't go from "breakfast is not more important than other meals" to "breakfast calories are literally meaningless"

      I thought the no breakfast comment was a little strange, however, for me, I can just skip lunch actually. Many days I'll eat a good breakfast, and one other meal for the day and be perfectly satisfied. As a person who likes to look good in clothes, and not continue to become an average obese American, I sometimes wonder how people actually become so large. Is it because they were raised to believe they HAD to have three meals a day? I really wouldn't know. My mother was a if you are hungry figure it out on your own kind of mother a lot of the time.

    When I was a kid, I noticed that I'd get the worst stomachache before school whenever I ate breakfast. Consequently, I stopped eating breakfast, and I still prefer to skip breakfast. I later learned that I'm a celiac, and I often wonder if my past morning stomachaches were related to that condition. Most breakfast foods are centered around bread....
    However, sometimes a warm bowl of soup tastes really good for breakfast on cold mornings. Soup has become my favorite morning food I decide to have breakfast. ^_^
    Anyway...I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes to skip breakfast. I have also been lectured a lot about how dangerous and bad people think it is to skip the "most important meal of the day."

    • @HongWanSophia
      @HongWanSophia 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually had the same and I got to another conclusion. In my opinion, I think it is related to the waking up process, whenever I would wake up rushed or waking up early when I'm used to sleeping an extra few hours and/or when waking up if I didn't protect myself from the breeze (idk the expression that i'm trying to use, so I apologise and hope you can understand what I'm trying to say nverthless) on mostly my belly area ou back, I would get stomach aches. And those would be even more probable to happen it ate/drink dairies.
      And I got to this conclusion after noticing that I would rarely ever get those stomach aches during the weekends(when I wouldn't wake up at 6:30 and would instead at 11~12:00) and after my school schedule got changed to an afternoon schedule (classes would start at 13:30 instead of the 8:15)

He's got a bunch of videos on the science behind gluten and how eating less food in general is so much better for the human body if you'd like to check them out! I was actually one of the people who religiously ate and advocated for breakfast but have gotten detached from it through intermittent fasting and I'm feeling so much better! Today, I don't crave nearly as much food as I did before, whether it be lunch, snacks or dinner and I'm experimenting with shortening my eating window! All in good intention, of course:)

      No, it's the kind of clothes that H&M, Forever 21, Uni Qlo and other stores like them sell. They only sell clothes that are in season or currently trendy, but after a few months they switch to a new collection for the new season. Because of this, some women tend to feel the need to always be in season, so when new seasonal clothing hits the shelves, they buy those and neglect the clothes they bought last season. This is a horrible way to waste money.

      Fast fashion companies, like Zara, Forever 21, and H&M, mass produce trendy at the moment clothing as quickly and cheaply as possible. These clothes are made in China and Indonesia, as well as other developing countries, often at the expense of living wages, child labor, and business malpractices, as well as chemicals and pollutants being released into the local environments of these countries. I highly recommend a documentary on Netflix. It’s called “The True Cost,” and it gives you an in-depth look on how fast fashion affects factory workers and the environments in developing countries.

    Holiday souvenirs. I know these are not a regular part of the weekly budget, but I've learnt, over many years and occasions, that buying souvenirs from holiday destinations that feel oh-so-right whilst you're there, feel oh-so-what-the-? when you get home. Whether you're buying souvenirs for someone else or for yourself, most of the time you're better off skipping this one. It's likely the recipient isn't going to do anything with your souvenir and neither are you. Take some photos, make memories, learn something from other cultures, donate to local crafters but don't bring home their junk.

So we buy those edgy stilettos and realize we had no where to wear them. If you buy items like this retail you really lose out. When I purchase on ebay, I often get the same amount of money back and it all canceled out.

    Actually with designer make up, sephora has a pretty good return policy. If you buy a make up item you can return it within a month if its just lightly used (they can use the item as a sample product in their stores if it cant be resold), and you don't damage the packaging. so you can always try it out and if it doesn't work for you, return it.

Maybe it’s because I’m stingy or something but when I go shopping I would always look at the sales section first.

    Okay heres one that I wouldnt say I dont miss, but that has saved me SO MUCH money and anxiety: a daily coffee out! There is no reason you need to buy a coffee from an expensive coffee chain to be productive, but that's something I wholeheartedly believed deep down while my heartrate rose in line because I also knew I was wasting money I did not have on this. I still buy coffee out weekly, but I'm reducing even that and getting better at making good coffee at home.

    You're right, it IS okay to skip a meal or just snack it out. I'm not a big dinner person. I love having big breakfasts and lunches. I eat slow enough and go to bed early enough that I can finish lunch at 4pm, have a snack at 7 and turn in for the night at 10. This habit works perfect for me!
    Another thing I learned as a college student is that if you're friends are going out to dinner but you just ate or already have food at home you can still go with them. You can bring your own snack, or just sit and talk. You have to be okay with telling the waiter you're not ordering anything and with the pauses in conversation where everyone is looking at their food, but other than that it totally works and I'm so glad I figured this out!

    I bought a not very fancy coffee machine (ground coffee, not capsules), $180 AUD for a small one. Took me a couple of weeks to learn to operate it for good results, but it works. I used to order from UberEats on weekends because I wanted coffee in bed. But the minimum order was $20 for free delivery, so it always got more expensive than just coffee. The machine removes the need. Besides it’s better when I make it.

    Don't forget, you can return USED makeup! (gently used. don't expect to use the entire thing and be able to get a refund). If you don't like something, take it back! Receipt within 30 days = cash money and no receipt = store credit. this is everywhere! from grocery stores and drugstores to Sephora and Ulta. I can't believe how many makeup wearers don't know this so I tell everyone! Lol

    • @kjjjacobs13
      @kjjjacobs13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EMILYN she mentioned a good way to save money on makeup was to try out samples and get enough for 2 weeks worth to make sure you like it before you buy it. I was just providing another option. Buy it, if you like it, no harm done. If you don't like it, return it for full refund before 30 days, no harm done. No need to buy a lot of makeup. Also remember, there's a lot of drugstore dupes out there everyone! 👍👍

    • @mai567
      @mai567 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @kjjjacobs - Well, there is harm done if you buy makeup and then return it. Perhaps not for your budget, but if everyone did that all the time, it wouldn't be sustainable. It's better to look up online other people's experiences, check reviews and swatches, test out the product at the store and then make the purchase. Then, if despite it all, it happens that the product is not right for you, it's good that there is that option to return it. Still, first comes responsible shopping.

    I removed myself from most of my email lists about a year ago. I bought a bunch of fast fashion clothes. I instantly regretted it, then regretted it even more when the stuff started falling apart almost immediately after wearing a few times. I did it to remind myself not to buy from that store, then I did it to remind myself not to shop at all of the other stores. Its very freeing to not have to buy something every time there is a 50% off sale!

    I recently found this Channel and find it very informative. For those who say those is useless to me! or I can’t afford these things, so why talk about them! Or some said why not tell me tips I can use instead of something that is out of my reach in the first place. This was a video to reach the people who. Ishtar have these needs but can’t afford them, or might fall into the trap of buying something they can’t use. I took what she said and applied it to me, not said this is not applicable to me so why is it here?! No, I don’t buy expensive clothes, but I buy more than I need and cannot possible wear all I bought. I had so many kitchen appliances and stuff that they have to be stored in the garage! I started looking at how could these things apply to ME!! I decluttered the kitchen utensils and gave away the appliances I rarely used. That freed up space for what I do use use and saves me money by applying the “How often would I use this” question and saves me a ton in my budget. We are retired and the budget is smaller than we were used to, but the spending was slower in getting under control. I watch a lot of the videos and always try to find at lease one thing in it that can be applied to my situation, and usually find more than one or two or even three.
    Thanks for doing these. Ideas and please keep them up. Maybe you have some that are more specific to the smaller budget, I don’t know because I just found you about 6 videos ago! Lol I am finding that you have a lookout and process that works for me, even on a limited budget.
    for those who find nothing for themselves in your videos, I suggest they look for videos by another person, there are a multitude of them out there. But for me I repeat my THANKS!

    A note on the whole breakfast thing:
    While there isn’t any solid research behind breakfast being significant, if you find that eating a substantial meal during the morning improves your quality of life, don’t think you shouldn’t be eating breakfast just because people say you don’t have to. In other words; breakfast might not be the most important meal of the day to someone else but it’s okay if it is for you. All of our bodies work differently and run better or worse with different things. Do what’s best for you.

    This video, while okay in itself, is deeply personal and not necessarily something that can be applied to the masses. Yes, you shouldn't be buying drinks with dinner all the time or moving into an apartment because its in a trendy area, but in reality most of us do not have this kind of agency. A lot of us can't afford to move into trendy neighbourhoods or move out on a whim, a lot of us aren't forced into morning coffee with the work team, or can even afford to go out to eat regularly enough where it becomes a problem and we have to skimp on the fancy drinks. This seems like a very much middle-class, young, single, New Yorker kind of video. If you're a relatively well-off millennial with a cool trendy job in Manhattan than maybe this video will apply to you. But heed my warning, she told us this was her own "personal" experience...and believe me it is! If you want a video that is going to teach you a little more about budgeting than I'd go for something else.

    I’m on emailing lists to a specific junk email but I only look for the store’s name when I plan to buy an item from them to see if they emailed me a coupon. I search for the stores name with the search email feature on my mail app for my iPhone so it searches all my emails. Many stores have specific times they do sales so for me I noticed most of the places I like to shop at do tons of sales in June to early July. So now I wait until then to buy garden seeds or buy clothing like bras from Lane Bryant. I also buy my body lotion for the year in June since Sister Sky usually does an annual sale for 50% off then.

    I like google because it automatically sends all those ads to a 'promotions' button. I'm not really influenced by them, I just find them to be spam. The only store I like to buy clothes from online is Express because they have a lot of sales, they always fit, and they have a lot of simple but stylish pieces that fit my figure really well. I love Marshalls! I used to wear a lot of thrift store clothing, but I don't wear as much as showy stuff anymore (if you want to buy something for a theme party or hang out with that guy with man bun: thrift store), and getting the right fit is very difficult. Stretchy materials that flatter my figure don't age well. But if you want to make your style more cutting edge and unique it's a great place to start. Also I don't read fashion magazines. I don't buy things I see there, but they make me feel bad about my looks, which encourages more spending.

    I try to not eat outside, but when I really have to, I have a list of the places and dishes that are the most healthy and cheap/affordable, so I go easy on my wallet.

    @0:17 There is no difference because preferences are subjective and you set the requirements for what you need. There are only needs.

    Just go vegan, you start spending 30% less on food. Also faux leather and faux fur are so much cheaper, and most importantly, they don't involve slavery and murder.

    I agree with you on breakfast. I’ve never had the time to eat breakfast. Not only that, my stomach has never agreed with me if I ate anything more than a banana or yogurt.

    Done this my whole life. No debt. Also invested.
    Trying to cut out collectibles and movies. I rent more movies now than owning. And if I really want to own it I'll find the cheapest. Cutting from buying a tons of video games too. I usually wait for a huge massive sale and play old games.
