  • A look around a car park with a very grotty lift & stairwell. Also with views of some mobile phone transmitters and a substation with 2 large transformers.
    Car park located in Poole, Dorset, UK. Designated as 'High Street Shops' although the entrance is in Hill Street.

    There is an awful lot of love and attention in this video.
    Its very easy to dismiss the everyday and commonplace and not "see" the world we inhabit.
    This video if discovered a thousand years in the future paints a picture that is closer to our reality than most of the videos uploaded to TH-cam.
    Thanks for the video John.

    That's the grottiest car park I've ever seen. Surprised the elevator still even works.

      I remember going to Wood Green in the late 90's and parking in the car park and went to use the lift and as the doors opened, there was a guy having a wee. I got back in my car and went home. Never been back since lol

    On that lift, if you remove the stainless steel veneer you will find under that a wood finish Formica sheet, somewhat scuffed and tatty. Under that there will be a thin plywood oak veneer bonded to a steel, panel likely dating back to 1930 to 1940. Long and narrow, so originally an Otis or Express, though it has been upgraded from swing doors to automatic doors, though it probably still has the original motor, brake and gearbox on the top of that shaft, and the original guide rails, emergency brakes and bottom and top electrical final stop switches and the rebound bumpers. Might still have the original shaft lighting as well, or at least the original conduit and wiring. Probably still has the original oak or teak floorboards under the tiling though.

      I found more funny the many different buttons. 1 board at door, 1 board at side and 1 board at the backside. In Germany and Thailand all lifts/elevator have a sign with name, wich year build in, how many people inside or weight ...

    It would be cool to see a video about a paternoster lift.
    Such a shame they don't make them anymore , so efficient.

    That lift reminders me of Doctor Who's box. Now, I wonder which alternative realities we'll get if we press buttons A,C,E or G. I hope none of those will call Daleks to the car park.

    The "help point" would mainly be for use in a fire situation if there's someone on that floor who can't use the stairs. Pretty grotty... Cannock Market Hall in the late 1970s (but before the opening of the Mac Market store there on 4 July 1979) had only grotty and often unreliable lifts. The new one for Mac Market served the "new" level 1 of the car park (it effectively had three level 1 floors - the Mac Market car park, the Gemini restaurant and the Market service level) and odd levels 5 to 11 (there was no level 3 at all!). Later upgraded to a pair of lifts, and now the main lifts for the entire car park.

    I know the one you mean, it also leads to Market Street. I lived in Oakdale up until eight years ago, what tee'd me off with Poole council is they put double yellow lines on nearly all of the roads in the town which means you have to either use these grotty multistory car parks or pay 80p an hour to park on the road either way parking in Poole is a rip-off! Thanks for posting John.

    Thanks for the tour.
    The transformer yard was very small. Obviously to work in amongst the transformers, they would need to be de-energised; so safe clearances would become academic.
    As for the appearance of the area, I always had the impression that Poole was kind of well-to-do. Perhaps it was once. My part of east London (London Borough of Waltham Forest) actually looks posh compared to that part of Poole.

    What's your favourite lift(s)? Mine has to be the ones in Friends House, Euston Road. Complete with that wonderful whooping sound that old lifts had. If you listen to anything that was recorded there you can hear the Whoop every now and then, I love it :(
    A close second is an open lift that is always moving, you have to step on and off in motion. It is still in operation in Munich and I even saw it in a German film one time.

    Why didn't you test the help point intercom?
    Now we may never know whether or not it actually works.
    Or are you intending to do a follow up, "High Street Shops Car Park - The Sequel"

    I just love these lift reviews. One of my highlights of the evenings viewings.
    It is so nice to experience these elevators, with expert observation, commentary and thorough videoing.
    It is extremely important, that more people should become aware of the overall practical status of their local elevator services.
    Thank you again John, for your dedication and committment.

    It’s a more unusal one but I think it’ll need some work soon. The door is rusting on the ground floor and just feels like it needs something. At least the motor sounds original but the stopping certainly needs work.

    "Upgraded with three sets of buttons", okay great but it begs the question.. Why?

    • @Motorman2112
      @Motorman2112 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably so you can hit the button for your floor when someone's parked a pram across one of the other sets, three seems a bit much though.

    • @LeapFrog_Radio
      @LeapFrog_Radio 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Motorman2112 That makes perfect sense, a pram or cart would block one or more sets. Thank You!

      I agree that 3 is an overkill. The 1 panel at the front of the lift is fine.
