- Putin ally Dmitry Medvedev claimed Romania is "not a nation," rejecting a call for Moscow to return the country's confiscated gold. The EU has demanded the return of 91.5 metric tonnes of gold and cultural artefacts that were exported to the Russian Empire in 1916-1917 by Romania. Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the Romanian debts to Russia and the Soviet Union are equivalent to 1,365-1,665 tonnes of gold. Zakharova said the debt is 20-25 times greater than the value of the entire Romanian gold reserve sent to Russia in 1916-1917.

Because I read some of the comments, I can't help but tell you that you are right in your case, but the "Tesaurus of Romania" case is about something else.
There is a major difference between "acquiring" artifacts of countries under colonial control and sending to an ally, with whom you fight shoulder to shoulder, for Safekeeping and then Restitution, the Tesaurus of your National Bank, in order not to be robbed by the enemy, to at that time Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire.
Most of it was returned as even Ceausescu admitted. Maybe the entire treasure but Romanians sent even bacon, wine, sexy women underwear and French glossy magazines as it was exposed in the 1935 restitution. We may wonder if everything they claimed to send there really reached the Russian vaults.

The Romanian Thesaurus was sent in Russia to Tsar Nikolai, who was the cousin of Queen Maria (of Romania). The countries were allied in war. IT WAS NOT A PLUNDER, IT WAS AN ACT OF TRUST BETWEEN ALLIES IN WAR. This is why this action of the russians is a betrayal. It is a different situation that what happens in the western museums. It (thesaurus) consisted in around 90 tons of fine gold, most of it not represented in inglots, and various art objects and paintings. It was one romanian banker, Mauriciu Blank, who opposed the initiative of sending it to Russia, instead suggesting to be sent by sea to United Kingdom. It could have been better.

All the gold in the Spanish Vaults was shipped by the Spanish Republicans to Odessa, then USSR during the Civil War so that it wasn't seized by the Nationalists. The naivety of the move is breathtaking. Stalin just commented "The Spaniards will see their gold again just as we see our own ears".

Many of them later returned freely to Spain after the fall of the Francoists. But some remained citizens of the USSR. In return Romania became communist, but wait ..in 1968 Romanian communists said f..k you USSR , give Moldova back and our gold!!! In 1991 Russia avoided the reunion between Moldova and Romania with the transnistrian war...In revenge Romania goes NATO and lets US to put missiles ( probably nukes) , Patriot systems and buys a lot of Himars ( before anyone else) . Russia tried to buy Romania with Ukraine lands ( historically Romanians) , Romania sent them away, they are not fools , it was a bad deal.
In 2022 Moldova had the papers ready for the reunion with Romania if Russia was approaching and also Odessa oblast had a similar backup plan.

Russia returned the artifacts long ago but not the gold reserve mentioning that it was for the 300 mil USD ww2 reparations even though Romania paid trough her nose those reparations between 1945 -1954 trough 16 economic enterprises called SovRoms that exported at that time to USSR goods (wood, gas, petrol, tractors, uranium etc.) in value of 960 mil USD. Medvedev is a little off and so is Zakharova when it comes to this issue. I would expect a little more diplomatic response.
