Wow. That was a great ending. Firs dying in an empty house, forgotten, all spent, a little deluded, the cherry trees in the orchard being chopped down. All of us are him when we meet death. I cried. I now understand why this was such an influential play. I can see Beckett and Miller and O'Neill and Williams in this play. A great introduction 20th century theater!
The best Cherry Orchard I have seen, though the National Theatre's production with Zoe Wanamaker is a very close second. This 1981 version is remarkable. The beginning of 4/4 has the colour, and the blocking, of an authentic 19th century Russian painting. The closing scene with Firs is truly heartbreaking. Warm thanks to whomever posted this play here!
BRAVOOOOOO!!! (Wasn´t able to pick who acted best!! No one like the British to stage a play.... ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHED by the profoundness and meaningfulness of the whole play!! Masterful!! Thank you!!
I wanna thanks you alot Pao SCL. One of the great work of Chechov and it was a merical to find it on youtube and you made that merical comes true! Thanks Alot! Simon/ Stockholm
It's better to read the book, and watch the movie at the same time. A lot more context that way. Make this film 100 times better and the book, 100 times better. They work perfectly together
This version of Stanislavsky is still played to this day; it has been repeated for 120 years. But Chekhov was very dissatisfied with this version and said, “Alekseev (Stanislavsky’s real name) ruined the play for me.” Chekhov wrote to Stanislavsky: “Lopakhin, it’s true, is a merchant, but a decent man in every sense, he must behave quite decently, intelligently, not petty, without tricks... Lopakhin is a gentle man, not a loudmouth, the rich speak calmly.” Chekhov didn't even come to the premiere
The ending is wrong. Firs should not fall off a chair and collapse in a heap, He sits down on a divan, lies down and with his final words, 'You silly old!.. lies there, motionless. Read the play, directors.

Fiers at the end: "They forgot me...?" So heartbreaking! But such a beautiful and honest performance! I want to give him a hug.
What a wonderful cast! Thank you for posting this.

It's supposed to be a comedy.
A very fine production of this classic Chekhov play. Students who need to study the play please watch this one.
Thank you so much for posting this. Beautiful.
The ending broke my heart

Thanks, sounds like it was hard work getting it here!
Fantastic work by all characters
I watched this for English class and the professor said this was a written as a comedy. Meanwhile the ending is absolutely devastating.

Exactly what I wanted to do. Problem is, I have a different translation...
This is actually what I did. I just finished it. I read one act then saw it, then the next... :)
totally agree
"They forgot me...". Compelling! Humanity.
watching that ending running on absolutely no sleep at 4am is not something I would suggest
Thank you very much for the movie, it's amazing
Fiers's bit at the end is mildly horrifying.
The music in the Ball Scene is literally unendurable
Thank you again Sir Richard x

This story was very depressing, it lacked value while it talked about value.
you do realize this whole dream was summoned out of thin air. you might have thought you were watching "real life" but it was mere magic.

Terrible sets. Perhaps it is on purpose.
love these sets and costumes and lighting. so many paintings come to life. the hair and makeup was great. nothing overdone.
