Sparrowhawk Attack!

  • A collared dove and a magpie were busy minding their own business when an awful curfuffle occurred in next door’s hedge. Out of view, a sparrowhawk was preying on what appears to be a robin, but seemingly missed out. Then, for some reason, a second bird flies right into the path of the sparrowhawk but again the sparrowhawk appears to leave empty handed. It was all over in seconds and those of us just enjoying a regular daytime stream were left thinking “umm, was that a sparrowhawk?!”. Well yes, turns out it was!

Awful curfuffle? The wild birds are there because they are hungry. The hawk is there because he is hungry. He is intelligent enough to seek cover and ambush his prey. Looks like he left empty handed this time. I love all birds. But I especially love the raptors. Nature at her finest. Thank you for your wonderful videos! 😊

Awful not implying unnatural obviously. Very formal English: “Awfully good” etc.

Nice editing Pat :) Those distress calls (even of pain i think) of the sparrow are hard to hear for me but well the hawk has to eat too.

Both birds seemed to escape from it this time.

Wow close one! We've recently started having a sparrow hawk come to our garden too. Do you mind if I ask where you got your bird feeder hanger poles from? Currently thinking about getting another but there are so many on the market

They’re a bit of a mixture but the pole in use for the feeders right now I inherited with the house 7 years ago amazingly enough!! The ones holding up the cameras for the table and hangers are gardman ones.
