  • This is about products I recommend, why I like them and I explain how they work in gardening at Homeacres. There are seven in the video and listed below.
Plus see my website Links page for details of where I buy other items such as bird netting, mesh, steel hoops etc. charlesdowding.co.uk/links/
    00:00 Introduction
    00:24 Module trays
    02:26 Dibber
    06:12 Sowing timeline wall chart
    07:52 Clothing by Teemill
    08:34 Hedge Trimmer by Stihl
    09:14 Woodchipper by Bosch
    09:48 Muck boots
1 The 60 cell module tray is my own design, available in the UK from Containerwise containerwise.co.uk/product/c..., and now they are available in North America from allaboutthegarden.com/.
In Europe you can buy them from The Farm Dream thefarmdream.com/product-cate..., who will also be selling my books in 2022.
2 The wooden dibber is from Garden Imports www.gardenimports.co.uk/produ.... Sorry the lines were not too clear, spacings marked are 15cm/6in, 22cm/9in. 30cm/12in and 35cm/14in. Wood is getting expensive here and the price keeps rising as a result.
3 The sowing Timeline wallchart and plant raising + no dig leaflet are from us charlesdowding.co.uk/product/...
4 No dig sweatshirts and T shirts of organic cotton are from TeeMill charlesdowding.teemill.com
5 The Stihl electric hedge trimmer is an HLA85 and it has saved us much time and effort, is really well designed shop.stihl.co.uk/collections/...
6 I do like the RHS Muckster Boots, for their comfort, ease of slipping on and off, and the shallow tread which does not accumulate compost or soil www.shuperb.co.uk/mud-dogs-ru...
7 My Bosch electric shredder is an AXT 25TC for max 45mm wood www.bosch-diy.com/gb/en/p/axt...
8 Not in video, we offer until year end all my online courses half price, such as this one about Skills for Growing charlesdowding.co.uk/product/..., is £41.50 exc VAT
Filmed and edited by Alessandro or ‪@SpicyMoustache‬ , whose excellent You Tube channel is about no dig gardening in urban London / spicymoustache
My work centres on no dig gardening, see my books for more information about this easy method. Plus you can buy collections of my videos from Retrieve, who add AI to enable easy finding of content that interests you:

We have now been one whole year no-digging and I just wish we had done this years ago. It has been the most enjoyable and rewarding gardening year with far less effort than before. We actually compete now over who will be pulling weeds first as there is not much to pull out anymore. Thank God for the flea beetle attack which led me to finding you. Thank you for the new calendar. Wishing you and your family a merry Christmas. Off to the lotty now to pick salad leaves!

Go on Charles promote your stuff!! You've given out hundreds of hours of free amazing content about no dig and gardening. You can promote your products and not be shy about it 😂, Your audience knows your authenticity and how much you give back to gardeners so if you say something is quality and worthwhile then most will trust you and go ahead with purchasing it. Especially in this day and age of everything being "throwable or lower quality". Love the shirt deisgns by the way!!

I agree. You shouldn't be worried about promoting useful products; you will never be capable of the hard sell. I have used the module trays this year. As I have just the one allotment I am devising plans to mix up to eight sowings in one tray that will be ready for planting at about the same time. Early days. This is my second year of no dig, with no previous experience of any type of gardening whatsoever. I was a figure of fun at first for the more experienced of our North Yorkshire brethren, "Yon useless bugger's trying to grow cardboard".... etc. Now I'm getting tentative questions when no-one else is looking. I have replicated the 'small garden' measurements and all, ready for next year. I am trying to work up the courage to remove the sides of the raised beds on the other half of the allotment. Wish me luck.
Oh, and I would heartily and enthusiastically recommend Charles' online courses. They are my go to reference and I am learning all the time.

Don't worry about recommending things. If I see something useful, I always tell my friends about it if I think they could benefit from it, and they are usually grateful.

I was never able to bond with growing vegetables and then I found your TH-cam videos and the no-dig method this year. I'm in a mountainous region of southern India (Nilgiris) with temperatures and rain conditions similar to Somerset but not as cold (min 5 C,max 27c) and still in the Tropics. Following your videos, and reading your books, my harvests are bountiful and it feels effortless, and compost making is coming along too. I've "lusted" after your boots for a very long time and I am so glad you promoted them in this video, along with all the other items. You are an amazing person, and in my house you are simply referred to as "the Wizard" . Our best wishes to you and your family and thank you for all that you do.

I noted your diffidence in advertising these items but at least you do genuinely use them and I found Containerwise seed trays through your videos which I love and have been much admired. I do prefer to not being regularly bombarded with adverts so if you got this all out in one go, fair enough, it is your business income and you do offer so much for free that I will be eternally grateful for!

I fully recommend your trays. Having very damaged hands, they have been wonderful for me to use this year. I really struggle with flimsy trays, because they bend, split, and I can't get things out of them easily. With yours, the hole is bigger in the bottom, which I like for bottom watering, but also, I can hold the tray nicely with one hand, and use a finger to push, if needs be, through the hole without damaging a plant with my rubbish hands! Having limited space also means I get to start a lot of seeds with these, without the need for lots of potting on for much of what I grow. That's also a huge bonus for someone with very limited energy levels!
I have the hand held version of the Stihl Battery Hedge Trimmer. Again, because I have huge hedges around my property, which my son helps with his petrol strimmer, but I like to do some of the work myself, and the hand trimmers where getting too much. I can't manage the petrol version as it's too big/heavy, but this handheld battery version allows me to do a great deal in my own time. It's not going to do huge amounts of commercial work, but the battery lasts ages, and it certainly gets the job done on my lot! The price was also really reasonable. Just in case other people are struggling too.

I so admire you and the impact that your life and influence has had and is having on the "Best Practices" of sustainable, no dig gardening. I am preparing to construct a No Dig garden here in Kentucky in the early Spring of 2022. I have the mushroom compost, soil and shredded tree bark on the property. This is quite an untraditional way of gardening here in Kentucky but there has been much interest from everyone I have shared with. I hope to share as you do in my small way to educate. I admire and appreciate you. Cheers!

Charles, I for one enjoy all your wisdom, don’t be shy about promoting the items you find useful. I appreciate it greatly. I would be thrilled to own a chipper shredder for making compost! I’m heading into my second year of no dig garden, I hope to do better this time around. But it’s so true knowing when to plant what is key. I have such limited space I find I run out of room too quickly! But my job this weekend is to install low tunnels or hoop houses over my beds so my cold weather crops can carry on through the winter, I’m hoping for a good spring harvest!

First, I really like the seed trays with the big hole in the bottom for removing the plants, I didn't know anything like that was available here in the U.S. Secondly, a garden shredder is something I really need, as I am always trimming branches around my 3/4 acre property (lots of woods on the edges), and I could create lots of additional compost with them. I watched some of the reviews for the Bosch shredder, and it's relatively quiet like you said, which I like with neighbors nearby, and it really seems to handle larger branches very well. It does seem a bit expensive, but some reviewer said it was selling for less money until Covid came along, and now the price has gone up, like everything else. I also like the Muckster boots that go higher up your ankle, I have bought the lower ones which are great boots, but at times I have walked through some deeper puddles with them and ended up getting my socks soaked, lol. I actually wear those Muckster's more than any shoe I own, as I find them pretty comfortable and light weight.

Hello Charles, I loved your video. I don’t think it’s bad to recommend things and people are always very keen to know a good product. I have seen your Muck boots in your videos before. I am a dog walker by trade and I’ve got through so many pairs of wellies in my life I cannot tell you. I use the Muck boot Arctic range short boots, and I have to say I’ve had a pair of wellies now for 5 years and they are still going. Some of the others I have tried including Hunter, and Joules have not even lasted a season. They are excellent boots. 👍🏻🍀

I bought two pairs of Bog boots a couple of years ago. On special they were around $140 total. Neither lasted a season before they began to perish and split. I went back to the $22 pair from the local hardware store that last around 3 or 4 years. Might try the Muck boots because I'd like a softer pair as I wear them so much.

ROCK ON GNOME GARDEN DIBBERS !!!!!!!!!

  • @trish3580

Thank you so much for talking about these items - and explaining why for instance the dibber is a certain width. I am in Canada and haven't readily found your products - shipping from the UK is prohibitive. The trays look so amazing (and the boots!) - I've purchased a number of the flimsy trays with the tiny holes at the bottom - I am so glad yours are more hardy. I didn't realize you started 90+% in trays! I have to do more of that (only tomatoes last year and prior maybe only 10% - with all the bugs in the garden (wooded area around) the seedlings would have a better chance. As always thanks for the great content...good thing your merch isn't all available in Canada as I'd be hard-pressed not to buy it all and forgo the rent!

Thank you Trish and I hope you can source some better products. I am worried for you because new trade deals are making it very difficult to shift things around the world, I was just reading about 240% tariff on anything we sell from here to Canada. I hope it was wrong!

You can always recycle 100% cotton sweatshirts straight into your compost heap. My old Wrangler jeans end their days there (apart from the legs used to wrap bricks for holding down fleece & insect mesh).

My biggest problem with no dig is that I had started my seeding and got invested with knats which I had to replant some 3 time so leaving a bad start for a test year but my plants rebound about 80 percent OK and I planted extra and their fruit was fair sized so good overall ,Replanting probably gave me a few extra weeds but I had almost non but the cardboard walking ways got ugly so clover next trail which has many advantages.
I am definitely making a improve digger for making a 2.5" hole that cleans my clay soil out and releases the dirt clogs at will.
    Thanks for your teaching Sir

Heat your compost up in a cool oven (80/100 C) for approx an hour to sterilise the compost prior to seed sowing, no more fungus gnats. I do this with my own compost and so call sterile commercial seed compost.

Thank you Charles for another informative vlog. Something I must do is to make my dibber, similar to yours, more rounded at the bottom, thinking mine being more pointed might leave an air gap at the base of transplants. I would love to have a decent chipper as my allotment has significant headgeing but alas no power. All done with a hand clippers. I could then utilise the clippings more efficiently. Suppose your charts would be ideal for putting up in the shed, perhaps plasticised in case of damp? I don't have an issue if you want to review products such as power tools for the garden as long as they are unbiased.

Inspired by Charles, I got the Bosch wood chipper from a guy in the UK. The chipper is great, but since I live in North America, I had to get a 220-volt outlet installed outdoors for it. It worked out, though, because I think I'll need the outlet for the electric car I intend to get in the future. Win-win.

I wish you supplied seedlings online. I would definitely buy your winter/summer salad , radicchio/chicory and endive seedlings. Despite many years' trying I still haven't got hang of endive - really love it. I'm brilliant at summer and winter giant Italian parsley though! Perhaps we can encouraged the British public to grow more radicchio/chicory and endive by explaining how good it is for the liver. It's really popular with the French, I suspect, for this very reason........

The first time I watched your video, I told myself that I must get a dibber. So I made one as my first gardening tool. Then I have been looking for trays like yours in the US for years. There are companies that make very sturdy trays but I couldn’t find any that has big enough hole at the bottom that I can simply push the seedlings out using my finger. I found that to be the distinguishing feature of your trays. I would love to see 6 cell version too. I am looking forward to these products being available in the US.

If in the US take a look at Neversink farms winstrip trays, they are quite premium but they have the large hole at the bottom amongst other features.

Charles, one thing about sowing times is that they can be affected by whether you have an outdoor greenhouse/polytunnel or not. I don't, so I sow my winter squash indoors and they live indoors until I transplant them at the allotment. My experience the past 3 years is that I sow slightly later than you, simply because they grow ridiculously fast at 20-23C indoors, so they would be ready for transplantation by 10-15th May using your sowing date, which is a bit risky (and this year I had to keep them in pots for too long as it was so cold until late May). The difference I notice most is for rapid growers like tomatoes, courgette, squash and cucumber. For most other things, I use your dates and things work out really well.
