+Rawr McRawr (Tato) If I may: _To say that Mike Portnoy is a crappy drummer is_ having death wishes and asking to be sodomized brutally! MP is THE drummer!
+Rawr “Tato” McRawr it's just an eternal shame he only plays with SHITTY bands (dt was turning into one with silver clouds, and when they kicked him their music turned to utter unlistenable shit QUICKLY)
the bongo's sound doesn't ad up tho ;-) but he is by far top 3 of best drummers with danny carey. actually top 2 cause i can't name any better of those 2?... mike mangini :-)
It's good to see MP back on a larger kit. I know some say less is more, its not the size that matters. . . .etc. However for Mike, more is better. :-) Awesome song!!
Woooowwww!!! :-D Epic Mike! I am a prog metal drummer myself...been playing for 30 years! For sure your a huge inspiration to me and my band, and the whole world.... Sons of Apollo just ruuulllezzz!!! you are the man. Your a god of music and everyone should respect you. Thank you for all the years of music you've created that helps the world find true epic-ness. Your the best :-D
What,MP play metal???this is so awesome!!!even though everybody miss your work in DT but you are absolutely shining brighter than ever!always love your works, good luck with this metal allegiance and The Winery Dogs!! (I'm learning a lot from you, sir! and drumming is become part of me now, thank you Mr.Mike Portnoy!)
WOW! Amazing drumming, amazing song, amazing album, amazing quality of the drum cam! Congratulations! Definitely adding this one to my collection of MP drum cam DVDs :P. It's nice to see how they are getting better and better so I hope they keep coming!
+Dan Bergen Well, actually that's his Siamese Monster from Six Degrees and Train of Thought. He talks about the kits in house in Sabian-Obsessed with Mike Portnoy. And yes, I hope to see that day too! :)
+Pranav N I still wish he and Akerfeldt had actually gotten something done a few years back when the talk was he, Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson were gonna do something. Id like to hear Mike put something together with Guthrie Govan.
Perfeito. Saudades de ver esse kit usado no DVD do budokan em 2004, ali também o kit cover do Rush. Gostaria de saber onde foi parar os kits do Scenes from a memory, octavarium que ele toca no Escore e o kit de acrílico do Chaos motion.
I would say the same Josh about my page. I would LOVE to get MP's drum sound. Seems like he's got it down somehow and there's no going back. Would love to check the settings on EQ, etc, heads, etc etc. Love, love, love it!
+Chris DeChiara You know what I really dig about Portnoy's drum sound? No fucking triggers! Also, because I have witnessed it first hand and as evidenced in this video clip, Mike plays through each song from top to bottom, no looping of anything. Notice the shaker and tambo playing? Could have easily just recorded one tambo hit or a measure of shaker playing and made loops and copy-pasted them in the track wherever they wanted but he doesn't do that shit...he plays through. If he makes a mistake or isn't happy with something he'll go back to the point where he thinks it went south and drop in there and keep playing until he's done. Thats how much he respects the music and the process and thats why everything he has ever played on sounds so fucking good! Mike is the real deal!
Willard, is it possible there's some sound replacement done in the editing process? You wouldn't see anything on the drums if this was the case. You can mix in a little bit to enhance the sound without it being too noticeable. Not saying MP is doing that, but just throwing it out there as a possibility. Also, I thought I saw some editing in the video which would mean he did some different takes of the kit part. Which isn't a huge deal at all, just saying. But yeah, he plays through the overdub parts, but they ain't so hard! Still, MP is the man. Been following for a long time now.
+Chris DeChiara From the sessions I have been in I do know the engineer recorded single hits of each snare, toms and kick but in this case it was done for reference so that tones were kept the same from day to day. We all know temperature over night and of course hitting on the heads will cause the skins to raise or lower in pitch so these single hits were recorded as reference points. I think it is entirely possible if there was a particularly amazing performance played but maybe one kick didn't hit hard enough or a snare hit got more rim than head then the single hit sample could be used to correct that but it is the exception rather than the norm and would only happen after Mike had done the sessions and was gone and couldn't be called on to re-record it. When Mike is recording a song it is an intense and cool process...he gets in there and plays in a very improvisational way and if he does a really cool fill or pattern but doesn't have it nailed yet he will have the engineer roll the take back, listen to it, decode the fill he did and then do a retake until its right, which was usually on once. Basically they roll tape until he gets to a spot he wants to redo a fill or make a change, or he screwed up and then they do that punch in right then and there and keep rolling until the next thing needs to be corrected. Even though Mike does punch-ins its very live and organic and unscripted. He will have a basic idea of the beat he is gonna do for a song's parts but plays totally in the moment and a lot of magic happens in the studio that way. Lots of improv going on and thats why you will see edits in his drum cam videos...he may do 1 or 2 punch-ins on a certain section until he gets what he wants then when the drum cams get edited they find the fill that was actually used on the album and cut that into the video. Not only is it cool to see Mike playing in his Drumcam vids its also educational. He wants players to see what he does and share the wealth of his experience and skill.
+Willard Sargento Very interesting. What sessions were you in? So, if I'm understanding correctly-once the toms are sounding tuned up and at their best, they record single hits so they know what the "best" sound is and will use that for a "pitch/tuning" reference AND to replace and notes that weren't consistent within a groove, fill, etc? I got the drum DVDs from Train of Thought and 6 degrees. I've actually had some articles published in Modern Drummer of MP and would like to do more...thanks for the info!
Chris DeChiara Neal Morse solo album sessions back on 2005-2006 -ish. Yes you are correct about the single note hits for reference and the replacing of a hit that wasn't loud enough etc. Thats pretty typical in engineering. I will say this, I do not know if any of Mike's stuff was replaced later...Mike is so good they are usually able to get what they want while he is there doing the sessions. Once a song is done from top to bottom they go back and listen through and if they hear anything weird he will pop right back onto the drums and fix that part then come back in and listen and so on. They would also re-write song sections on the fly sometimes and even write new parts here and there on the fly and have to record drums for those parts. But again they were very thorough in doing it right while he was there that I doubt too much editing was needed after he was done. Also engineers will record drum hits like that for their own use in drum programming for other things. Kind of like an Audio diary of the session. Congrats on the articles...I love MD...been a subber for years!!!
Mike Portnoy with an Opeth shirt. Holy fuck, that's epic.
To say that Mike Portnoy is a crappy drummer is to be an ignorant person. Great job Mike.
LMTR14 He plays with these two bands: Flying Colors and Neal Morse band. They're pretty good.
neal morse would be, if it wasn't for the OMG IM A CRISTION NOW thing. oh well, there's at least a new transatlantic album every 10 years or so
LMTR14 I've enjoyed the winery dogs after giving them a chance, It's different but its complex and works
Coolest drum trick I've ever seen Mike do, (and hes done some really awesome ones) make his eyeglasses disappear and then re-appear again!
