Hamilton was known for having really attractive eyes. They were written about quite a bit. Historically Angelica WAS married by the time of the ball and meeting Hamilton, but in the story it was decided to not have her married in this point of the timeline. However, historically Hamilton went through his whole life and past with the family which lead him to being seen as trustworthy enough to marry into the family after Angelica's husband ended up being shady and his lies about his past caused the family issues. Also a great point in Helpless is that both in the story/song and historically Eliza falls in love with Alexander via his letters. Alexander is well known for his writing, it's how he got to the 13 colonies, with Washington, his positions later in the story and history, and here with Eliza. It's what makes Eliza burning the letters so incredibly significant, they were what made her fall in love with Alexander. It's even hypothesized that Eliza tried to get help with her letters back to Alexander (before marriage) because she felt like her writing wasn't up to par enough with Alexander's and she was falling for him of course.
Historical accuracy comment here! IRL Hamilton's eyes are blue and very pretty and mentioned quite extensively in letters/other historical docs. To Casper's note on people having to be introduced to each other in the 1700s (at least in Europe?), IRL Angelica is married, so her introducing Alexander and Eliza does make sense both historically and storywise. I actually didn't know that introducing thing, so I'm happy it's added to my experience

They included it because there was actually an (untrue) rumor started that Martha Washington named her feral Tom cat after Hamilton, but at the time a “Tom Cat” was not slang for being a player. It was only the term for an un neutered male cat (which when un neutered can be violent and fight with other males for territory). The untrue rumor was meant to disparage Hamilton at the time. Lin thought it would be funny to include it in the musical the way he did because the meaning of Tom Cat has flipped in time from something that was originally made to disparage him into something that a younger Hamilton might say “that’s true” to. Edit- if I remember correctly the rumor wasn’t even started until shortly after Hamilton’s death.
The "How does a" opening music motif is my absolute favorite, just because of a detail change in the final time it's used. The strings sound like a door creaking open in all of the other times. I won't say more, so I don't spoil anything (although it was spoiled in literally the first song).
Honestly, I hadn`t thought about Chris Jackson at the ball being anyone but George Washington before. I always just asumed it was him. Also, in the musical, yes, Angelica is sigle at this point. In reallife she was already married when she first met Alexander Hamilton. About Hamilton`s eyes. They are often described as some sort of purple (violet or something?) they just probably were more like blue or something similar. But him having very captivating eyes is probably pretty accurate. I don`t exactly know since it`s not really adressed but what I`ve often read is that in the musical John Laurens is Alexander`s best man and not George Washington. In actual history neither of them were actually even at the wedding and neither was any other of Hamilton`s friends besides one guy from military. So, it`s not that important anyway.

Fun fact: When I was like 7, I met a former Harlem Globetrotter on a subway either to or from D.C. I was in Baltimore because (I think) we thought there was something at Johns Hopkins that would help with my useless legs, and the woman who helped us find our way around brought us to D.C., and at one point on the subway, she asked me what my favorite sports team was. If you look at the portrait of Alexander, he has really nice eyes, and apparently that's accurate. The topic of the accuracy of portraits does bring up an interesting point. The time from when photography became possible to the time when photo editing became possible is actually relatively short, so there's only a small amount of time when images of people are guaranteed to be honest about their appearance. It's possible that some of the people whose portraits look really good were actually fugly, but they paid the artist to not depict them accurately.

Skimming through the comments I havn't seen anyone explain explain historical ball etiquette, so let me explain real quick. Casper is absolutely right. Back then it would have been inappropriate them to talk to each other if they were not introduced - actually for anyone, married or not - though there were more leniencies once you're married. BUT they had special occasions where you might meet people outside your social bubble. Mainly balls! At balls gentlemen could walk up to you and ask you for a dance. If you were not introduced yet, you could either ask a common acquaintance to do so, OR ask the master of ceremonies - that was like 90% of his duties. Like, a gentlemen would go the master of ceremonies, say something like "see that girl? She hot! But I don't know anyone who knows her. So please introduce us, and then I can ask her to dance with me!". And once you were officially introduced it was okay for you to socialize and flirt and call on each other and stuff. THAT IS WHY PEOPLE WENT TO BALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, Angelica walking up to Hamilton? That would not have happened (married or not)! That is our modern sensibilities being projected on a historical figure. But being introduced to someone at a ball? Yes absolutely, that's why you went there!
I believe that hamilton and Eliza met at a ball that was thrown by Martha, Washington for General Washington’s staff officers… so at 1330, it would seem that that is Washington at the ball that he and his wife are hosting.
Harlem was, I think, new at the time, still being developed, and it wasn't uptown. I always felt this line was meant to show how Hamilton doesn't have the means to provide for her the way she's accustomed to. He doesn't have an estate to move her into, or the means to buy a place in one of the "good" (rich) neighborhoods. They have to get a LITTLE place that he doesn't already own in a neighborhood that isn't already established and "figure it out" At least that's me piecing together the little bit I know.
As a funny historical note, that line about Angelica teasing Eliza that she should share Hamilton with her is actually real. She wrote Eliza in a letter in 1794, “I love him very much and if you were as generous as the Old Romans, you would lend him to me for a while.” On a more serious historical note, it is thought that Angelica and Alexander were probably attracted to each other, and were very much kindred spirits, but they never did anything about it. Ive researched a lot about this stuff so i wanna share loll Hamilton only got married because he realized (i believe laurens was actually imprisoned at this time so he actually was NOT at hamiltons wedding) that after the war, he would be penniless and alone. Relating to Hamilton’s eyes thing, in letters to John Laurens Alexander says that Eliza has pretty (black?) eyes and that’s the only reason he married her, which I find very interesting.
It actually dies refer to the fact that historically Hamilton had very beautiful eyes. One of his friends in the Federalist party as being "a deep azure, that show eminently without the slightest trace of severity or hardness"

Hamilton was known for having really attractive eyes. They were written about quite a bit.
Historically Angelica WAS married by the time of the ball and meeting Hamilton, but in the story it was decided to not have her married in this point of the timeline. However, historically Hamilton went through his whole life and past with the family which lead him to being seen as trustworthy enough to marry into the family after Angelica's husband ended up being shady and his lies about his past caused the family issues.
Also a great point in Helpless is that both in the story/song and historically Eliza falls in love with Alexander via his letters. Alexander is well known for his writing, it's how he got to the 13 colonies, with Washington, his positions later in the story and history, and here with Eliza. It's what makes Eliza burning the letters so incredibly significant, they were what made her fall in love with Alexander. It's even hypothesized that Eliza tried to get help with her letters back to Alexander (before marriage) because she felt like her writing wasn't up to par enough with Alexander's and she was falling for him of course.
Eliza didn’t burn his letters, though, she burned her own, possibly due to her self-consciousness regarding her own writing ability.

Historical accuracy comment here! IRL Hamilton's eyes are blue and very pretty and mentioned quite extensively in letters/other historical docs. To Casper's note on people having to be introduced to each other in the 1700s (at least in Europe?), IRL Angelica is married, so her introducing Alexander and Eliza does make sense both historically and storywise. I actually didn't know that introducing thing, so I'm happy it's added to my experience

Harlem was originally a Dutch village in like the 1600s (Haarlem is a city in the Netherlands).
It’s gone through a few different ages, it was a big Jewish neighborhood for a while, then Italian, then in the 1920s the Harlem Renaissance (black cultural movement) occurred. At least one of Hamilton’s houses is still a landmark.
Angelica was actually married and had three children at the time that she met Hamilton. Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy actually had older brothers as well at this time.
Lin-Manuel has publicly admitted that he forgot about the older brothers when working on this song, so they weren’t edited out on purpose, at least.

Off-camera, you should watch some of the Covid-era livestreams they did for promo when Disney+ bumped up Hamilton to streaming instead of theatrical release. "Brady Bunch" style Zoom-call performances of the whole cast from their homes still sound amazing, but with some added real-life humor like Daveed Diggs (Lafayette) having to shoot in his bathroom while his wife (who was in the ensemble) got to shoot in a more comfortable home studio, or Leslie Odom (Burr) not able to stop himself from breaking into the choreography.

They included it because there was actually an (untrue) rumor started that Martha Washington named her feral Tom cat after Hamilton, but at the time a “Tom Cat” was not slang for being a player. It was only the term for an un neutered male cat (which when un neutered can be violent and fight with other males for territory). The untrue rumor was meant to disparage Hamilton at the time. Lin thought it would be funny to include it in the musical the way he did because the meaning of Tom Cat has flipped in time from something that was originally made to disparage him into something that a younger Hamilton might say “that’s true” to.
Edit- if I remember correctly the rumor wasn’t even started until shortly after Hamilton’s death.
The "How does a" opening music motif is my absolute favorite, just because of a detail change in the final time it's used. The strings sound like a door creaking open in all of the other times. I won't say more, so I don't spoil anything (although it was spoiled in literally the first song).

About Hamilton`s eyes. They are often described as some sort of purple (violet or something?) they just probably were more like blue or something similar. But him having very captivating eyes is probably pretty accurate.
I don`t exactly know since it`s not really adressed but what I`ve often read is that in the musical John Laurens is Alexander`s best man and not George Washington. In actual history neither of them were actually even at the wedding and neither was any other of Hamilton`s friends besides one guy from military. So, it`s not that important anyway.

Fun fact: When I was like 7, I met a former Harlem Globetrotter on a subway either to or from D.C. I was in Baltimore because (I think) we thought there was something at Johns Hopkins that would help with my useless legs, and the woman who helped us find our way around brought us to D.C., and at one point on the subway, she asked me what my favorite sports team was. I don't like sports, but I saw the Globetrotters on Scooby-Doo and became a fan because of that, so I said them. A man in a suit opened his briefcase, wrote something down, then handed me an autographed photograph of him as a Globetrotter. If you look at the portrait of Alexander, he has really nice eyes, and apparently that's accurate. The topic of the accuracy of portraits does bring up an interesting point. The time from when photography became possible to the time when photo editing became possible is actually relatively short, so there's only a small amount of time when images of people are guaranteed to be honest about their appearance. It's possible that some of the people whose portraits look really good were actually fugly, but they paid the artist to not depict them accurately.
At 21:15 they asked about his eyes and yes Hamilton supposedly had violet eyes like light purple blueish eyes. It was one of his defining features

Skimming through the comments I havn't seen anyone explain explain historical ball etiquette, so let me explain real quick. Casper is absolutely right. Back then it would have been inappropriate them to talk to each other if they were not introduced - actually for anyone, married or not - though there were more leniencies once you're married. BUT they had special occasions where you might meet people outside your social bubble. Mainly balls! At balls gentlemen could walk up to you and ask you for a dance. If you were not introduced yet, you could either ask a common acquaintance to do so, OR ask the master of ceremonies - that was like 90% of his duties. Like, a gentlemen would go the master of ceremonies, say something like "see that girl? She hot! But I don't know anyone who knows her. So please introduce us, and then I can ask her to dance with me!". And once you were officially introduced it was okay for you to socialize and flirt and call on each other and stuff. THAT IS WHY PEOPLE WENT TO BALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that hamilton and Eliza met at a ball that was thrown by Martha, Washington for General Washington’s staff officers… so at 1330, it would seem that that is Washington at the ball that he and his wife are hosting.
Harlem was, I think, new at the time, still being developed, and it wasn't uptown. I always felt this line was meant to show how Hamilton doesn't have the means to provide for her the way she's accustomed to. He doesn't have an estate to move her into, or the means to buy a place in one of the "good" (rich) neighborhoods. They have to get a LITTLE place that he doesn't already own in a neighborhood that isn't already established and "figure it out"

As a funny historical note, that line about Angelica teasing Eliza that she should share Hamilton with her is actually real. She wrote Eliza in a letter in 1794, “I love him very much and if you were as generous as the Old Romans, you would lend him to me for a while.”
On a more serious historical note, it is thought that Angelica and Alexander were probably attracted to each other, and were very much kindred spirits, but they never did anything about it. Angelica was too loyal to her sister to sleep with her sister's husband.
Oh yeah, Alexander's eyes were kind of legendary among society. And really, if you find a picture of him, the artists were really fond of them, too. 😆Hell, even his picture on the ten dollar bill shows his eyes off to good effect. He was a damn good looking man.

Regarding Lawrence walking Eliza I've read somewhere that he and Eliza + Hamilton spent the honeymoon night together however I think this is mere speculation although it is said that Hamilton did send rather affectionate letters to Lawrence. I think it was from someone's comment on another video or the wikipedia i cant remember. Take this with a grain of salt though.
