      I still think that these cars look boring. It's not classy, just devoid of any personality in my mind. The older 2001-2005 Passats pulled off that simple yet classy look quite well. I didn't do as well as I would have liked on that front.

    My 2014 SEL TSI is so quiet.. I live in Florida and we have good roads.. I came from a Lexus IS350 and no the Passat TSi SEL does not have the power, but with traffic... speed does not get you anywhere.. If you try to drive crazy and pass cars, you will just see the same cars at the next stop light.. I every once in a while do enjoy flooring her and get going and she does... but I love this car so much.. She's to stylish, roomy an everything else.. I HIGHLY recommend this car... put 5k miles on her and love my baby the day i got her..

    I've got a 2013 3.6 and love it. It's a rocket on the highway and I actually find it pretty quiet as well. It also hits the 33 mpg highway EPA without much trouble.
    That being said, I like it so much because my commute is all highway. If my commute changes to city, I don't think I will get another unless they make AWD available with the 3.6. 280hp and FWD is frustrating at times, particularly in wet weather. It's difficult to get the power down in 1st gear and accidental wheelspin is common.

    • @PIchillin456
      @PIchillin456 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can totally stand by what he says about backseat leg room. The auto mechanics program at my school has two 2012s that they use for educational purposes. I'm almost 6 feet tall with really long legs, i sat in the back seat once, and noticed that i had about 4 inches of extra leg room, before my knees would touch the seatback. It totally blew me away. It's very big on the inside.

    Zero squeaks, or rattles, just replaced original rear brakes. Still have original plugs and ignition coils AND wiper blades.
    You can't convince me that my car isn't reliable. So far it's been bullet proof.
    Road noise? My Honda and Toyota's were MUCH noisier and not nearly as reliable or substantial in construction.

    • @Towndrunk26er
      @Towndrunk26er 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I am on my second have not had any reliability issues with either. If my wife had not written off my 2002 Jetta Diesel we would still own it. 155,000 km on original brakes. 130,000 on original tires. Never needed a major repair. Change the fluids regularly, follow the book. How much more reliability do you need? Now my 2011 Jetta Diesel is doing well and has never needed anything but regular service.

    • @jasanmiguel
      @jasanmiguel 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad your VW's have been reliable. Save for my 1973 super beetle, my 1988 Jetta and 2003 Passat fit the CR repair curve, which is to say on low end of spectrum.

    • @Towndrunk26er
      @Towndrunk26er 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jaime San Miguel That's to bad. After owning Honda and Toyota in the early 2000's, I must say I am happier with the VW fit and finish and well we'll see where we go with the 2011 I have now.

    • @jasanmiguel
      @jasanmiguel 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Towndrunk26er My 2003 Passat had terrific fit and finish. But don't get me started on the reliability of that car. Thank god it was a lease! That car visited the VW dealer 10 times in the three year period I had it! And my then new 1988 jetta had quite a few dealer visits before getting totaled!

    • @Towndrunk26er
      @Towndrunk26er 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Jaime San Miguel I understood that. At least you don't die in a VW like you might in GM or Toyota due to manufacturing flaws. I'll take my life and a bit of unreliability over those cars any day. :)

    I totally disagree about the Passat being road noisy. My 2013 is anything but road noisy. I also disagree that the Passat is like a sports car when winding the roads although I have 17 inch tires and that one has 18's. But that alone would not make it a BMW. I have the Diesel so that 184 ft/lbs of torque might seem tame since I have 236 ft/lbs (I also average 37MPG combined). Camry and Accord are "me too" cars, the Passat is a nice change and the one piece steel doors (Camry and Accord take note) give me confidence and security as does the fact that in all probability I would not burn to death in a bad accident (thank you diesel) (R.I.P. Paul Walker).

I have an avg 50km commute for work. Is there anything I should be wary of at that mileage? Is 110km starting to get too old or should it have lots of life left? Also does the price sound fair? Maybe I missing something being in the UK but the Passat is the best buy in the saloon sector here (UK) followed by the Mondeo with no "VW reliability" problems.
    Of course the UK is hatchback mad and they sell far more Golf's/etc.
    VW's do not have any more reliability issues than any other make in the UK why so much mention of it? What do you guys do to them in the US?
    Oh yes I buck the trend by owing (and enjoying) a 2007 MK5 Jetta Sport TDI 140ps great car very reliable and I think better cars than the Golf as bigger and cheaper to buy. Just wish we could buy the Jetta GLI model :( never been available in the UK or a proper GTI model.

      I'm bewildered too. Volkswagen is the best selling manufacturer in Europe and far outsells Toyota and Honda there. If VWs are so unreliable, you'd think buyers there would have clued in by now.

    • @nigahiga6400
      @nigahiga6400 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      VW dealership "mechanics" in the US have little idea how to work on VW cars. Additionally, it seems auto maintenance is nonexistent in the United States. I mean I see people driving on underinflated tires look very low (meaning they are really low). Chinese cities rely on VW's for taxi duty. The past few years in Shanghai I've seen VW's with over 300,000 miles on original engines. All the drivers tell me proper preventive maintenance is the key. It is. A car is a complex machine; neglecting simple stuff like oil changes leads to expensive problems down the road. Owners try to save $60 every 6000 miles, but they end up forking over thousands more on expensive repairs. VW will outlive Honda or Toyota if they're taken care of.
      I had a 1986 VW Quantum 1.8L with a 5MT that just broke 700,000 miles before it was totaled by a distracted driver. Otherwise it would have probably done another 100k miles easily. I simply changed the oil every 3000-4000 miles, replaced parts before they fail, and check the car over every month. By giving the car the care it needs it will be reliable. Great cars. I would definitely buy another one, and the recent Takata scare for Japanese cars serves as more reason to buy VW.

      nigahiga6400
      That probably explains why Lexus usually comes out on top in the reliability surveys - Lexus recommends that their cars be serviced every 5000 miles or six months which is more than twice as often as their European competitors.

    I think you touched on some of the reasons this car has selling issues, some your didn't:
    - It is bland looking inside and out, the competition is more flashy or the new models of competition has turned more flashy
    - The trunk closing and crushing issue, you may think "just don't put stuff there" but there are others who simply wouldn't buy it like that because it's a stupid design.
    - The ride can't decide if it wants to be "german feel" or to floaty. Noise on the highway can be a no-no with the competition, ask Mazda
    - Main one to me, reliability. VW's are not known for it and when warranty expires the costs get retarded.
    Good points:
    - TDI (some would consider it a negative with prices down south)
    - Back seat room.
    The negatives are a bit to high imo. Great review btw

    It's gonna be a money pit. FYI the website is wrong about those powered seats. It's 8 way adjustable, not 12.
    This is an old circa early 2000 engine with some tweaks.
    The only one to consider is the TDI.

      I've driven this car with the 1.8T and I own a 2004 Passat with the 1.8T. The current 1.8T does not feel at all like the same engine, which is not a good thing at all. The engine seems less refined and doesn't make a nice noise. And the way the car pulls you can hardly tell that there's a turbo. Really though, this car has just lost everything that makes me love my 2004 Passat which is really unfortunate, because I'm looking to get a new car and this won't be on my list. I fully understand why this car is 9th on the list.

    This is not an "new" 1.8T. If you remember back early 2000's this was the engine for the Passat and other cars in the line up. Then VW went with the 2.5 and now is back to the 1.8T This is not a direct infection new engine, is a repackaged old one being sold as new. VW does that a lot. While the Japanese (Mazda and others) have new technology. Koreans! Have direct injection and much more efficient turbos (1.6 with 200 HP)......plus the maintenance costs!!!!!

    • @PIchillin456
      @PIchillin456 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually this is a completely different engine. It simply has the same displacement. Also this new 1.8T is direct injected. I've driven this car with the 1.8T and own a 2004 Passat with the 1.8T and I can tell you that the 1.8T is a completely different engine...and not nearly as good. I was very disapointed.

The style.. i got the tsi (which is tech. the base) for 23k. only had bluetooth. The car looks better WITHOUT THE CHROME HONESTLY!throw in the spokane wheels and it looks gorgeous!!
    technology is the ONLY DOWNSIDE. BUT VW touchscreens suck, your better off getting an aftermarket pioneer

    You talk about ride quality is too soft, and I agree! Well, thank VW America....not VAG in EU! The OEM struts and shocks installed in NMS are by Sachs "Hecho en Mexico" and they sucked!!!! At 60k on 4 year owned 2014 just changed my brakes.....AND swapped all shocks to Made in Germany Bilstein. Presto! The soft squishy ride is gone, now it drives super tight with crisp dampening of the smallest to biggest bumps like a champ!!! Go Bilstein! It is literally like I am driving a different car, even the steering feels tighter through the turns......bet made in Germany VW Passat B7 is not fitted with the same junk they threw in the U.S. NMS version....just a guess.

      Just picked up a 2014 B7 Executive Style Estate version. 6 speed Manual, 2.0TDi Bluemotion, 55k on the clock. lowered suspension from the factory running 18" kansas alloys with 235 tyres... the ride is probably slightly worse than smaller wheel and tyre variants on general roads but that's offset for me by the awesome motorway experience and tighter handling. Love this car so much!.

    VW needs to work on reliability and a campaign to combat it. Assuming they ever get their cars in working order, something needs to be offered to appease new customers such as a new replacement vehicle on the spot for ANY serious mechanical problem you encounter within the warranty period. Else, nobody is ever going to take these cars seriously. VW, people who buy these cars are not the same demographic as those who buy BMWs and Mercedes. You are competing mainly against Honda and Toyota, two reliability powerhouses that will bitch slap you into the corner when it comes to having a problem free car.

      pretty much these days, every car company has made some really ugly cars, and they all look pretty much the same because they want that "American" appeal. In my opinion, the Passat's body style sure beats the ugly Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry. The Honda Accord looks nice though.
