  • Toasting your own oak aging sticks at home can be very satisfying. In this video, I show you a very simple way to do it in your oven. Be sure when choosing to toast or char your own oak that the oak you use is well seasoned and dried.

    Consider using your enclosed gas grill for charring your oak chips and strips. Doesn't smoke up the house and it keeps your wife happy.

    Great video - well made and very informative, thank you!
    Here's a question I don't know the answer to .... Can you simply re-toast oak, over and over again - or is there a fixed life span to re-toasting, where the oak eventually gets 'all used up' and you need to start again with fresh chunks or chips?
    Again - thanks for sharing your knowledge with us

    • @StillnTheClear
      @StillnTheClear  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you will notice a lack of effectiveness over multiple uses. As far as re- toasting, I've never tried it.

      @@StillnTheClear I had a question and I am hoping you could help me out. I have a 40% alcohol liquor. If I make an apple pie infusion with apple juice and apple cider and the ABV would be 25% in the final product, would I need to infuse it in the refrigerator? Or would the Alcohol preserve it during the infusion.

    Everyone uses barrel pieces. I live in northern remote ass Wisconsin. No barrels to harvest around here. However there is no shortage of oak and other aging woods. Can't find one video on how to harvest, dry, and toast from the wild. This was done for hundreds of years with an axe and fire, why can't I find any information on it?

    • @StillnTheClear
      @StillnTheClear  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't speak specifically about TN Red Oak, but it has been my experience that red oak produces a bitterness that I don't like. I would say that there's only one way to find out if you like it. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

    Aren't the chips already toasted to JD specs?

    • @StillnTheClear
      @StillnTheClear  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The JD chips are toasted originally, but the barrels are used barrels and once the staves have been 'chipped' there is a lot of exposed wood on the chips that weren't exposed to the original toasting process.
