Actors come on to promo but Tom Hanks really knows all about the people he plays. I could listen to him for hours.
Half of the stuff he said in this interview is simply factually incorrect.
Hanks is in full-on used car salesman mode here. He'll tell you anything to get you to spend money on this piece of crap.
Priscilla Presley officially endorses this thing, so you know it's going to be crap and about as historically accurate as the Queen movie. Sanitised, pasteurised, homogenised low-fat cheese.
It is fascinating that he is the second most trusted person in America , second to President Obama. I think it is properly placed because I think the world might end if gossip came out about Mr. Hanks. The sweetest man.

I'm glad he mentioned King Creole because King Creole is a _genuinely good_ film noir. Not "Elvis movie" good, _straight up actually_ good. Elvis's part was written for James Dean and Presley carries it just fine.

I remember when Walter Matthau stated that Elvis could have been a great actor with proper training. He advised Elvis to study with Sandy Meiser, a famous acting teacher, but the Colonel and Uncle Sam had other plans. From my understanding, the Colonel did not like people advising Elvis out of fear that he would lose control of his golden goose.
The movie's before Elvis joined the army were good pieces of cinema. King Creole and Jailhouse Rock were well made for their time.
Mr. Hanks is a class act, an unbelievable talent, and not to mention, he looks better and healthier than he has in a while! :) I always enjoy when he appears on late night shows, SNL, etc. He's a natural entertainer and just an all-around good guy, from what I can tell. Good stuff, Stephen! :) Keep up the great work!
Tom is an all round good guy - when he is not eating babies! Or trafficking children.. or something. What kind of world do we live in where you hear that kind of talk? It drives you to despair.

@@ayeeshahm9078 it's just a facelift, jowl pad removal and some eye work. Not saying he hasn't lost about 25 pounds, but the face is thinner mostly due to cosmetic work.

I DID see the '68 special. Topping it off with "If I Can Dream" was unforgettable.
And let's not forget he had a twin brother who died at birth. AND Elvis died on his mother's birthday if I remember correctly. He was incredibly gifted and genuinely a nice man.
Not quite... Gladys birthday was in April but she did pass away on August 14th and Elvis passed away on August 16th...
I believe Elvis was the same age when he died as his mother when she died.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to see this movie. But Tom Hanks successfully sold it to me.

and the main reason why the movie probably won't compete for Best Picture.

I watched that 68 special live on T.V with my Mom. My pop was asleep on the couch. Watching that special was the first time I realized I had these " funny" things happing to my body. Very awkward when your moms watching with you and you as a pre-teeen didn't understand what was happening to you😳🤯😍. Anyway great interview. Tom is such a icon and can't wait to see this movie. Presley approved ✔️

I was a young teen when I saw Elvis in 'Flaming Star'. I wasn't really an Elvis fan but I really liked him in that movie.

Austin was a perfect choice to play Elvis. Such a talented actor who caught Elvis’s persona and essence like no other could.

The movie is well worth seeing again and again. Col. Tom Parker was great , maybe cost too much, but did incredible promotion. Even today, it would be great. He also did merch and publicity. N I wadays that would be all different people.
I was 2 months old when Elvis appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. After that I was rocked to sleep by my mother singing Hound Dog. 😊

The funny thing about this is I was in Las Vegas in 1970. You have to remember that Elvis was considered somewhat of a has been at the time. We drove into Vegas( the old Vegas strip)and got tickets to see him that night. He was great and thin at the time but the concert was half full. BUT all the women wanted to kiss him.
Dude, I must beg to differ with you my friend...no offense intended. In '69 and '70, he was putting out top 10 hits on the "pop" and country charts, even #1 on the charts. He was a "has been" only to the very youngest listeners, the hippies. Also... The number has grown into the rock 'n' roll equivalent of Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak: 837 consecutive sold-out shows performed by Elvis Presley at the International and Las Vegas Hilton from July 1969 through December 1976, when he last performed there. From late '56 to his last concert in '77, he never performed to an empty seat, anywhere. And his "Aloha From Hawaii" concert was watched live around the world by over 1.5 billion people, more than who watched the first man to walk on the moon! And this doesn't even count the U.S., which didn't broadcast it live because the networks wouldn't be able to put on commercials. How could a "has been" do that? He wasn't called The King for nothing.

Well perhaps it was the only time that the room was half empty cause the photos shows a very crowded place plus the movie" that the way it is" was filmed in the summer of 1970 where you can see people coming from all over the USA and all over the world through European fan clubs without mentioning the celebrities who attended his concerts. Sorry i find it hard to believe your statement cause we all know that Elvis did 2 shows per day and sometimes even 3 cause there were thousands of people wanting to see his show and the international room that was the biggest one in the city back then didn't have enough capacity to receive such audience .Elvis was the highest paid entertainer in vegas more than sinatra, Streisand,dean martin, tom jones or liberace so why they kept paying him that much during the following six years till his death if his concerts were half empty?

I was not sure so looked up the old video, but I did see the 1968 Elvis special. I was 8, and my parents were big Elvis fans. The main thing I remember was the band being on that little stage surrounded by the audience.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s my folks loved going to Vegas and seeing entertainers like the Rat Pack, Sophie Tucker, the McGuire Sisters, Dietrich etc and always ended the nite late into the morning at Louis Prima's show featuring Keely Smith and his band Sam Butera and the Witness's who always had a great lounge show crowd including many artists who had already performed earlier at their own hotel shows..I can still hear my Mom telling my Dad make sure you make reservations at the Flamingo Hotel and make sure Elvis will be in town at the same time so we can get tickets for his show at the International Hotel..Good times and great memories..Thanks Mom and Dad..RIP..😘
King Creole, Was filmed in the New Orleans area. '' before i was born'' But they used my Family's fishing Camp to film for some of the parts of the movie. sadly the Fishing Camp was lost in Hurricane George in 1998.

Aloha from Hawaii was broadcast on TV in 1973.. not 1974.. fun fact of the show is that it was broadcast- supplemented by the insert songs - on Wednesday April 4th 1973 on NBC.
I thought it was Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, SammyDJ and that lot who turned Las Vegas into a megastar magnet. They certainly had an impact on the acceptance of black performers - refused to play to segregated audiences. Frank Sinatra was a particularly strong advocate for equal rights.
Dean Martin was Elvis' favourite singer, and he christened him "King of Cool"; told his daughter that "they cal me The King, but your dad is "the King of Cool".
A while back, Dean Martin's daughter Deana came out to Australia to perform in our clubs. When I saw her live she was so mega-talented in her own right, and brought a sense of real Hollywood glamour, style and elegance to every aspect of her show. She was fantastic, and had some great stories to tell about the celebrities she grew up with. A very entertaining evening!
Frank and Dean were a generation older than Elvis, but Hanks is referring to the performers that followed Elvis.

@@benmoore42 Elvis died in '77, and I'd submit Wayne Newton (yes) did more for Vegas than The King. Newton was known as Mr. Las Vegas, and he was a huge draw. I was in Vegas in '81, and it was nothing what it is today. No comparison.

The most movies Tom Hanks acted in during one year was 4 _this_ year and again 4 in 2004. Coincidentally the title of one of the 4 movies in 2004 was "Elvis Has Left the Building."

I saw the movie yesterday and just now realized, listening to Tom talk about it, how ironic that Elvis performed at the international hotel so often, and yet because of Parker he was never allowed to perform outside the country, ever ever even though he desperately wanted to.
Remember when Austin Butler had tiny roles on Nickelodeon? So happy for him.

Elvis took speed long before he was drafted. He used to steal his mother's weight loss pills. Those were pure amphetamine in the 1940s and 1950s.

In 1970 Elvis met with Nixon and asked to have the Beatles deported. No kidding (look forward to the Lurhman sequel where he's fat, sweaty, and singing gospel songs to old ladies).
I don't think he asked Nixon to deport The Beatles but, according to Time magazine, he was highly critical of their "bad" influence : "Presley indicated that he thought the Beatles had been a real force for anti-American spirit. He said that the Beatles came to this country, made their money, and then returned to England where they promoted an anti-American theme."
His reason for meeting with Nixon was to be named a "Federal Agent At Large" in the war against drugs, which is somewhat ironic when one considers the role that prescription drugs ultimately played in Presley's death.

No I don’t, but on Google there is about a 25 sec clip of Tom leaving the theatre and he’s not wearing the pin!
He's wearing a pin that say "TCB". It's an acronym for "Taking care of buisness", which was Elvis' motto and a phrase he used to say when he wanted his crew to let gof a certain topic.
