My absolute favorite Buxtehude piece of all. Having performed it in 1962, I still sing the bass solo to myself to drive out other songs I can't drive out of my brain. But the solo does an excellent job of clearing the other music out without leaving its own traces. What a wonderful piece!

The sopranos are Suzie Le Blanc and Emma Kirkby, the baritone is Peter Harvey, the string players are The Purcell Quartet. There are additional instrumentalists of course but shamefully I've forgotten their names. The recording was made I think in the very early years of this century but after 20 years or so is still unsurpassed. The Purcells made two CDs of Buxtehude's Sacred Cantatas at around that time. This is the first. The second had if anything any even stronger cast of singers: Emma K, counter-tenor Michael Chance, tenor Charles Daniels, and Peter Harvey. You can still find second-hand copies of both online quite cheaply. Cheap or not, if you find them, grab them!
