The Professor Is In: The Essential Guide to Turning Your PhD into a Job by Karen Kelsky is another essential book to read for grad students. It's also on audible as well.
Hello Andy, I just started my Ph.D. this year, I've been following your videos for a while and it has been so helpful. I want to thanks for all the videos as well as thanks for the book recommendations.
I have a sort of sad PhD story. I have started my PhD last March. I got an amazing scholarship, I moved to a new country and I was so happy and motivated. This was definitely the most important and exciting time of my life. Then, the pandemic happened. I was shocked and numb, couldn't bring myself to work. I was so scared all the time of under performing. Then, one day, I got the news that my dad passed away, it was because of the virus. At the time, the flights were cancelled, so I couldn't even attend my own father's funeral. I couldn't even be with my mom, family. I was stuck at a foreign country. It has been 6 months now. I feel better I guess. But I still struggle with mental problems. I don't know what will happen to my PhD or career. I am so lost and scared.
Basin sagolsun. Ancak sanirim phd, su anda kafandaki problemlerin arasinda en geride olanlardandir. Umuyorum kendi hayatina odaklanabilecegin bir duruma hizilica donebilirsin. Basarilar
Hang in there, you have sacrificed a lot, and you have gone this far, make sure you complete what you have started, to achieve and gain something despite of what you lost.
I have struggled a lot with fear of under performing too. Maybe that's something that happens when we get to new country and new environment, where we don't know yet where we stand with our skills and knowledge. I guess the good thing is that if you are worried about it so much it means you care about it a lot and you will find a way to make it work even if it seems very unclear now. In my university they remind us to ask for help when we struggle: supervisor, family, friends, university mental health resources... Please take care, it will get on the right track!
I have also been through the something similar. Get married in covid and Lost my father after 10 days of wedding. Then due to Extreme stress I was diagnosed with psoriasis( both scalp and skin) and psoriatic arthritis. I litterally wasted First two years of PhD because of poor Guidance rest two years got wasted because of these unfortunate events.
Recently listened to Deep Work and started scheduling every minute of my day. Never thought I could do it and that I'd hate it, but it's totally turned my life around. I was so panicked I wouldn't be able to juggle life this semester but now I am feeling great about it! Also, turning off notifications from 8-5 and setting timers on my apps has helped drastically
Thanks Andy! I actually bought Deep Work and Atomic Habits already 3 weeks ago after you recommended them in a previous video. I INHALED Deep Work, made alot of notes and sribbles in my copy, I don't think I have ever worked through a book as intensely and talked SO MUCH about its topics with my family during the christmas time. It has highly changed my mindset and I am currently restructuring my PhD-Life =D
Hej Andy, thanks for your awesome videos! AtM I´m facing the last year of my PhD, going crazy, but your lifehacks, tips, and recommendations help a lot! I´m already through "Deep Work", especially part 2 really is worth the read. One nice addition to your list might be "Destination Dissertation, A Traveler's Guide to a Done Dissertation" by Foss / Waters. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Dr.Andy for these TH-cam content. I'm starting my PhD this September, you have no idea how immensely useful these videos are for students like me. Thank you for all your time and effort. I'd be delighted if you could maybe upload a video on how to tackle a situation where your supervisor wants you to perform an experiment based on a scientific paper and you have no starting point whatsoever. My supervisor has already started giving me work whilst I'm in my masters and it's really worrying me as to weather I'll be able to survive this kind of a challenge.. please I'll be extremely grateful if you could share your input on this. Thank you! God bless you!
So this book is super specific to mathematicians, but I think is still worth to mention, for all mathematicians around here: A Mathematician's survival guide: Graduate school and early career Development. With this book I realized that I wanted to pursue a PhD, but that I am not completely sure of wanting to go to academia... I recommend it a lot
Just discovered your channel, amazing content ! I’m in my final year and really would love more vlogs from you especially on writing. I subscribed to your newsletter and found the planner useful. Thank you so much for this content, I will try to mention you in my vlogs too. 😊 I’m a very big fan of Deep Work by Newport, fantastic reviews.
Finally I found a good quality channel about PhD ! Btw, atomic habits I already had on my list to read in 2021 (currently finishing The Power of Habit), the other two books I didn't know about. I'll add them to my list, because they seem useful. Thanks for recommending! 🤗
Thanks love your videos Andy -thanks -keep up the good work. I'd also recommend a useful book for PhD students = How to fix your academic writing by Mewburn et al. This really really helped me with my writing. Would be great if you could make a video on academic tone and style in writing [multidisciplinary please-not just chemical or science] -just general tips that would apply across most disciplines for chapter/thesis writing!! Cheers -keep up the good work. Zigster.
Thank you for being so honest and relatable! I can relate, scheduling every minute of a day is not for me too. I'm reading Atomic Habits right now, this book is really motivating, it makes you feel that change is possible for everyone and it doesn't have to take some unrealistic efforts to get where you want to be. Helps to organize your day better and feel better during lockdown =)
Hi Andy, so i've just started with my PhD or rather bridging program before the PhD proper. It's a new field for me and so I need to make the time to read literature, to do coursework, to attend seminars, and to do experiments. That plus I'm taking online programming courses on the side for additional skills and to prepare for my post PhD career. All of these are so cognitively demanding that a few hours of deep work per day do not seem enough. I am making progress in small steps but it doesn't feel enough. And sometimes I'm just too spent to continue working. I need ~8-9hrs of sleep. 3hrs for morning routine (gain energy to overcome bed inertia, shower, small exercise, meditate, get dressed). 2hrs for cooking, eating, and cleaning. 8hrs for work. That's a total of 22hrs with 2hrs to spare in a day that can easily be lost to toilet breaks, conversations, social media, zoning out commute. So how i deal with it is essentially work gets delayed and i work on them on a per day basis. 1 day for coursework, 1 day for reading, etc. Then the problem there is that if I don't complete my course requirements, the next opportunity is later in the week or next week - or delay everything else to the point that it's turning into firefighting and I just have to focus on the most urgent one (looming deadline)... It just feels that there's never enough time to do everything. For example, that online course i take on the side, i haven't got back to it in more than a month now.... And i experienced this as well when i was teaching and working in corporate. There's just not enough time. I don't think i can sacrifice sleep and my weekends are reserved for leisure and my girlfriend. Do you have any advice motivational, strategic, or something else entirely?
I have a pretty similar lifestyle with similar weekends, and I just started my PhD in September. How have your schedule changed? Or was it worth it to keep it as is?
I am now hearing (with Audible) Atomic Habits based on your recommendation on your other video. In my chapter five now and it's super awesome! I like the idea of making changes with the margin of 1%.
leaving social media is not good. its good for branding and you can learn a lot too if you follow the right people. and many people make a lot of money from them too. being 'connected' to the world is very important for financial success
I recently read "Make it Stick" by Peter C. Brown. It's about how we actually learn best as humans - excellent book. I am reading "The Coddling of the American Mind" by Jonathan Haidt right now, it is about how parenting and social media have led Gen Z to super high depression levels (and also made universities places where free speech is less and less welcome). Finally, I recommend the very short but great book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. This book is particularly germane with what is going on in America right now, it is a parable of sorts that tells you how a society can fall into "classes" and ultimately authoritarianism.
I started watch your vedio since last month, your videos are helpful, however I disappointed when you mentioned one of your vedio, if you have anxiety don't do PhD 😂.. Can you recommend which type of Kindle are useful for reading books?
The books are:
1- Atomic Habits
2- Deep Work
3- The Power of Small
Can’t help feel this is an excuse to flog some books via affiliate links 😟
I just finished "A PhD is Not Enough" by Peter Feibelman- it's a great frank overview of what the academic pathway actually requires.
Man, this channel is growing fasttt. Well done keep up the good work. Iam starting my PhD in March. TH-cam algorithm sure works as well.
Thank you, Raz!
The Professor Is In: The Essential Guide to Turning Your PhD into a Job

"A PhD is Not Enough" is also quite good, although more specific to the sciences.

Thank you so much for sharing these book reviews! Looking forward to your future videos!!!
Thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks for recommendations! Blessings from Texas 🇺🇸
You are so welcome!

Can you make a video about how to pick a Ph.D. Supervisor?
Video idea: advice on how to write your own references. In my experience busy supervisors would rather you wrote your own reference for them to edit

This channel is pure gold👍👍
Please share other books you read as well. I also liked “digital minimalism” and “breaking the habit of being yourself”.

Thank you Andy 😊 Your films really helped me survive my first year of PhD :)
Happy to help!
Always insightful and pleasant content!
Andy, thanks God you exist! ,🌹
The more I follow you and the more I see similarities... Phd, buddhism, stoicism, quitting social media, beard... what else?
I wish I read this BEFORE getting a PhD...actually before beginning university...anyway, I would suggest them to everyone :)
Mindset by Dr. Dweck
Thanks a lot Dr. Andy. I will add The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho to the list.
Last one looks especially interesting - I would add The Power of Habit that list

I do appreciate the list.
The Now Habit by Neil Fiore
thank you Sir.
Most welcome
Can we have a video on qualitative research?
Andy, your channel is having fantastic growth. How many hours do you spend on a video in production?
You realize that if people watching this channel quit social media, you'll loose subscribers?
Thank you
I started watch your vedio since last month, your videos are helpful, however I disappointed when you mentioned one of your vedio, if you have anxiety don't do PhD 😂.. Can you recommend which type of Kindle are useful for reading books?
Now I bought the atomic habits book 📙
office tour please
My tip: do not need or have friends, lol.
First one here
This is just another social media. :P Mind you, a few are good as humans are social creatures. Cheers!
