  • Small metal particles, called nanoparticles, possess novel and exciting properties compared to the bulk metal. Scientists want to understand more about nanoparticles to expand their implementation in modern technologies and improve our way of life.
Typical methods to produce these highly unstable particles results in a range of sizes, which may not have the same properties, leading to behavioural differences e.g. catalytic activity. We are aiming to develop robust, reproducible and inexpensive methods to produce and stabilise nanoparticles of specific sizes.
We are primarily focused on using nanoparticles as catalysts to speed up reactions, in which the particle size is significant. The ability to tune the particle size in this application would lead to huge cost savings for industry and reduced precious metal depletion. Some reactions we have worked with recently include ammonia decomposition as a means to produce carbon-free hydrogen on demand, Fischer-Tropsch conversion of synthesis gas to liquid fuel and carbon monoxide oxidation.
