My mom used to call me "Ms. Astor" whenever I dressed up and did my makeup and hair. I miss her so much. It's been 18 years since she passed, much too young. Thank you for this video. It brought back good memories and a few tears. ❤
That's a sweet memory... My Mother referred to me as Veruka Salt (from Willy Wonka) whenever I had a temper tantrum 🤣🤣🤣 I miss my mother so much, even after 14 yrs. Huge hugs to you!!! 🥰🙏❤️
Excellent video. One small note: her maiden name is pronounced as Skermerhorn. I always get the idea that the Astoria was always meant to be merged with the Waldorf when I see that all the floors were aligned exactly. There are two Gilded Age women who deserve their own videos: Ruth Livingston Mills (who even looked down on Mrs Astor) and Isabella Steward Gardner.
John Jacob Astor was supposedly the grandfather of my step-great grandmother Lillian (Lilly) Miller through his first wife. She was introduced to society when she became of age. Unfortunately, Lilly's family later lost their money during the Great Depression. My great-grandfather's first wife was Nina Taylor and she passed away when my grandmother LaRue was only 15 or 16 years old. He later met and married Lilly Miller while working for the railroad. Astor's full-sized portrait hung prominently in my great-grandparent's home in Maryland as I witnessed as a young child.
I gave you a thumbs up because you pronounced Delano correctly! Lol I grew up in Delano MN and hardly anyone pronounces it correctly or knows it’s from FDR. ❤
Your videos are fantastic! My obsession with Titanic opened the doors of the Gilded Age world to me, I long for that time, sad that it will never happen again. When I see billionaires homes today that are all white inside and extreme minimalism and clean lines I just don't understand.
The Schermerhorn were some of my ancestors, and we are almost as poor as church mice, well educated but no money. Wish we could have inherited some of that, but alas, it is what it is. Our inheritance will be eternal though, through Christ alone, for eternity and I’d rather have that. Wonder where the Schermerhorns are now?
As a child I remember my dad making an occasional comment about some snobby woman by saying, “ She’s Mrs. Astor Butt!” I understand better now what he meant!
A huge pity the Astors didn’t use their vast fortune to take care of the survivors from the Titanic, they should have made a provision for them, accommodation food clothing, for several years many were women and children. White Star line owned by the Asters , did not even provide a coffin & funeral service for the unidentified baby, it was provided by the surviving crew members . Lastly White Star sent a bill to the family of one of the bandsmen who had perished, for his uniform. Giving a miss to half a dozen of those lavish dinners would take care of all this. Appalling behavior by people who should have known better.
Money makes people more handsome 😅 not a lot of powerful people in the world today are attractive either. They do have money, power, and the illusion of control.
Hey ! Love your content ❤ But can u make a video were you explain the dresses of rose from titanic ? I know you have posted a few but can u make one separately like....each video for each dress. Can u explain the dresses ? For example, the fabric used , the undergarments, how is that dress worn, the layers etc... It'll be very helpful if u do so 🙏 I know u can do that ! Keep going 😊
Having a hotel available Meant you did not have to be invited. And it kind of broke up. The 400, because now people could gather and socialize without an invitation.
It sounds like this woman was a very ignorant and apathetic woman. The only thing these wealthy people needed they have all their money taken and to live a normal life for they have to work for a living. Anyone born into money should have to live like that. Even if they get to keep their money they should always have to truly appreciate what they have. We all die the same and I hope she wasn't setting her sights too high on heaven.

Thank you!! I appreciate your comment!!
Yes! Would love one on Ruth. Love her country mansion “The Mills Mansion”. My favorite mansion on the Hudson!
@@andreamarin4296 I would have loved to be seated in that dining room and looking out over the Hudson.
Me too! And to spend Christmas there as well!!
You should tell the story of her rivalry with Alva Vanderbilt.
Yes!! I will need to!!
I always wish there was an alternative history were they squashed the beef entirely and became bffs taking New York by storm together.
Wonderful upload, beautifully narrated and lovely to look at. I adore high society history, just fascinating 🥰👍🤗
Thank you!!! Welcome🥰

I have the exact same feeling, no character at all!

How did they clean their garments?
With soap and water
I will have to make a video on it!! Great question
They probably never had to. They would wear them only once or twice.
Lots of servants.

Very true!!
First or second?
Why do they show paintings that are of the emperor of Austria?
It’s symbolic for the video
Franklin Roosevelt was an only child
James Roosevelt "Rosy" was the older half-brother of Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Fitting that she ended up with dementia.😅
