This would certainly explain why MA1 never had checkpoints. Obviously they wanted checkpoints from the start cause MA2 got em. You said they reworked the mission script system for the next game, probably for this exact reason. Also Dry Me Out was the demo level that shipped for Mechassault on the OXM Demo disc, so it makes sense that it would be the furthest along with development of this feature, they probably used that level as a testbed for different things.

Yeah I remember having that demo as a kid. Fun fact, that demo is what I used to help create the overall loading screen for the mod (where it shows the controls) since I thought it was more interesting than nothing lol

How playable mechassault is? Its been playable on both cxbx and emu for a while. If you mean ma2 then it's not playable on either still but making good progress on xemu
