I think that many people were introduced to Touhou by Sr Pelo's video lately. And are now hungry for more Touhou related content, such as this outstanding animation. And I can't shake the feeling that many people familiar or new to Touhou will rediscover their passion they had for it. Which could also explain the reason why I'm watching and subscribing to this channel.
I like the idea of that Marisa wants to keep up her own appearances while looking out for her friends. The subtle body language from when she donates to when she turns around says a lot without saying anything.
It's portrayed in canon too, which makes it even better alongside this animation. In Subterranean Animism, while playing as Marisa with Alice's shot-type and during Satori's boss fight, Marisa says she wants to make the incident worse to spite Alice, but as Satori reads her mind, Marisa is just as concerned as Alice. In Hopeless Masquerade, she starts to genuinely worry about the people in the human village, and only starts being her usual self once she confronts the source of the incident.
Considering the two of them first met one another waaaayyyy back in the Sword of Eastern Wind Incident, and have been good friends since then, it makes sense. The two of them are sisters in some regards. Something that Sanae can’t even hold a candle to. They’ve been together for that long.
I will admit, I was expecting Reimu to all but teleport onto the scene as soon as the coins landed. This happening though made it a very sweet and homey short.

And Reimu does get the occasional binge of donations, usually when she -invents- hosts a festival or has some attraction to draw in the villagers.
It's Heart-warming to know that after knowing that Aunn exists in TH16, Reimu isn't that much "lonely" anymore. Unlike when she only has visitors in the meantime... but having a companion is better.
Quite right, though I was under the impression that Shion, Sukuna and Clownpiece also lived at the shrine. I guess maybe it's because Aunn was introduced as living at the shrine from the get go, instead of after the endings/in the manga.

This has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I really like this vision of Gensokyo - peaceful and calm, with relaxing days full of happiness. I come here whenever I need a little escape from reality. Thanks for everything you do.

Giving this some thought I wonder if the reason why Marisa is so careful not to be seen donating hare is because if Reimu saw her do so it would poison their relationship with an expectations of donations in exchange for being together. Keep in mind in the books Forbidden Scrollery I believe it was shows the pair as being canonically inseparable spending everyday together. Knowing how deep their bond is would Marisa really want to risk ruining it by adding in the expectations of giving money. I like to think she donates in secret to keep Reimu going.

Well, she kinda is a kleptomaniac but I think it’s only limited to owners with a much longer lifespan than her. Like patchy. Since Marisa seems to not want to be a “true” magician (By learning two spells that removes hunger and aging I think) she will inevitably pass on due to old age and that’s when she’ll “return” the stuff
