John Calvin was already dead by the time of the St Bartholomew's Massacre. So what you're referring to as his plea for the Huguenots to leave was written during the persecution before the St Bart Massacre. Excellent podcast though.

The majority of those who came to The Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) did so in 1688 as a result of the Edict of Fontainebleau (revocation of the Edict of Nantes). They were forced to flee France or face death for heresy. They were regarded as a subversive heretical religious group. To see the effects of their version of Christianity is to study South African history. Their belief that all black/darkness referred to in the bible extended to peoples skin color as well. (They also believed THEY were God's chosen people). They brought the seeds of racial segregation with them (which later morphed into laws known as Apartheid). They adopted the name "Boers" (literally translated meaning farmers) and "Afrikaaners".
