Restoring old tools I find has just recently become my new favorite hobby. I have so far revived 2 ball peins, a claw hammer, a sledge hammer, and 3 axes. All free, either found in a barn or given to me by a friend. So satisfying because we're pretty much building a tool collection for nothing more than time, sand paper, a flapper disk, and some teak oil.
I would also have waffled it. BUT, that was a Great job you did ! That is actually a very nice framing hammer Now 👍 . Just needs a good checkering job on its face
In the future, you may find it easier to spray some oven cleaner on the handle and let it set for 20 minutes and then rinse and then rinse it off and let it dry completely for a day or two. It will take off all of the accumulated gunk. In the past, I have used this technique on old gun stocks and have been thoroughly satisfied with the results. At any rate, your restoration worked out well.

glad you saved the handle,but I did that once, and some time later (after some use) is snapped off clean at the head. The wood is weak.
