In most of Shadow’s mainline game models, it looks like his quills stay relatively the same length. Unlike Sonic where his quills got noticeably shorter from Sonic Generations to Forces. It’s an interesting distinction.
I don't like the inconsistency between Sonic and Shadow now. Their silhouettes no longer mirror eachother because Sonics hair and head were changed so much. Shadows hair has remained exactly the same but they wanted to make Modern Sonic into Classic sonic really bad for some reason.
@@imnobody321 At least they didn't give him that weird bald spot Sonic grew in Lost World and kept until this day. Classic Sonic in OG Gens had that bald spot too, but in Shadow Gens they remodeled Classic Sonic and fixed his bald spot.
The chest fur in the forces was supposed to be transparent in the black part of the texture. With all of those layers of fur it gives of the sense of real fur
Hey. I'm a game artist. The problem is, you're looking at these models out of context, and in much higher resolution. That and the shading is completely different. You have to consider the lighting too. Sure, that Chronicles model looks jank here. Especially compared to the other models next to it. But how small is the model on screen? You noted how the arms clip into the gloves on that one model-- definitely an optimisation decision. Would you actually notice that during gameplay? Probably not. It would be a bit silly if the artists had gone through effort of doing that, adding all that geometry, for a tiny detail that nobody would be able to see. I was hoping you'd go into each game and analyse it in context a bit more, so we'd understand *why* they made these decisions. How does it look in game? That's the only thing that matters. Still, this was a fun video. It's cool to see all the differences and you made it entertaining.
You need to disable the shading to see how the model actually loooksssss. The shading sometimes change how the model truly is. So its good to disable it
It's worth putting in the effort to set up the transparency for the fur cards. You'll get a more accurate sense for how it's intended to look that way. I'd also turn up the roughness on the material for his first model so that the highlights don't obscure the texture detail so much.
I think I’ve figured out why the riders models look like that, when they hit a character there’s an animation where their body parts get bigger where they are impacting, so I guess that’s part of the model because they are not that big in game
Nice video! Just a few things however; Shadows separate chest fur textured planes/meshes aren't made to show it blowing in the wind. It is actually something often referred to as "Hair cards" in 3D modelling, which in this case are stacked planes with semi transparent textures in order to emulate depth with hair while retaining good performance without need for doing something like individual hair strands. Also the Olympics models on the Wii generally have multiple character rig variants for each character that fluctuate between low poly and high poly (at least I'm like 90% sure) e.g. Shadow has another much higher quality model that is pretty much identical to the Black Knight model you showcased.
my favourite is the SA2 model i miss the ever so slight navy blue shade on his fur and the darker skin that shadow for me i wish they would try making it more like that
While you missed some models (how could you skip Battle!), still appreciate the video. Long overdue for the GOAT, Shadow. But yeah woulda been cool to compare and hear your opinion on models from like Zero Gravity, Free Riders, etc. Especially the Rider series since there was notable design updates between them (Sonic's quills got shorter every installment, and I'd assume same for Shadow as one example).
SA2, Heroes, Forces & Gens are the best Shadow models to date. Although my minor nitpick with the Heroes' model is that it kickstarted the trend of Sonic character's proportions increasing. Regardless excellent video mate, do Rouge next😏!
imo 06 is probably shadows best look, looks more serious with him being a bit taller and his eyes not being so big and wide open. i actually wish sega would sort of go back to this design in the next game since they seem to be taking the characters more seriously now and this seem like the right look for that.
For me it’s a tie between the SA2 model and the 06 model as my favorite. They both have aspects that I just love about the design. The SA2 model has great fur textures, I love the orange color on the ears and mouth the most, his proportions, I like how they made his Inhibitor Rings look different from the regular rings, and the low poly count actually makes his quills look the most like the 2d artwork with the 90 degree angles. And I love how the 06 model has his quills are more swept back compared to other models, I also like the proportions on him too, and it also has the honor of also being Mephilis’ model which made him look so cool.😎
Shadow consistently has had some of the best designs in the franchise, and while I do like his current design still compared to Sonics which is in desperate need of a refrsh already, I want him and every character in the games to get a refresh to their designs since they are all in need of an update to keep things fresh, or if they insist on keeping the models the same do what Shadow Dark Beginnings did and have everything be more stylized since after watching that short I almost completely forgot that this was just his 3D design with some style work by animators
I want to add another comment. I’ve been doing 3D art/animation and the part where you thought the fur would blow in the wind, it is actually transparent image textures stacked on top of each other so it gives the fur that 3D depth without affecting the performance. There is a black background but usually it is transparent so you end up seeing fur looking 3D. It is called hair cards. I learned that recently since it is how video games maintains performance without risking things like FPS drops or performance drops. I’m still learning how models in video games work so it is a learning experience for me. I learned the hard way when I tried adding realistic fur on a model and my laptop got so laggy. Even importing into the game engine didn’t do much. So I went back and added hair cards. Overall I enjoyed your models comparison video!
The “concept art” of Shadow from Sonic Adventure 2 isn’t concept art at all. The ones on the left are actual concept art, but the one on the right is promotional art for the box art drawn by Yuji Uekawa, which was after.
It's so painful when BOTH your fave character AND favorites models are from Sonic06 (Silver, my boy) Me and my sad unpopular opinion of the Mobians' models being peak in 06 Not the humans We don't talk about the humans
The mobian models in 06 were great, especially with the proportions fixing the crossed arms issue that the modern models have. I do wish they'd play around with the models more like they did back then, as the 06 models fit in better than the Frontiers models in Frontiers
1:45 Shaders *do not* come with exported models or their textures. That right here looks like just the standard Principled BSDF shader with Roughness set to a lower value and Metallic on 100%. This is also the same reason why HD models (06, Gens, Forces, etc.) don't look akin to their games. They come with different textures for color, normal maps, specular/roughness and metallic and often a falloff texture among other extras that are used to make the models look the way they do in their respective games, but only the color textures are being used here. I don't hate your approach but really if you want to judge the models' shading based on how they appear in Blender, I think it's best to recreate their materials first just from how the game presents them. I won't judge you if it's too difficult or maybe tricky for you, especially with HD models. There actually isn't a lot of info on what for example each texture does on an HD model and to be fair, even though I work with HE1 and HE2 models fairly more often, I still haven't definitely figured out how to recreate the shaders just by looking at them in game. 7:40 The chest fur is actually just layered 3 times with the same textures. There's no animation whatsoever. Also fun fact, the Forces model is almost 100% the same as the Generations model, only with a slightly different rig and changed up UVs for his shoes. I found that out because you can literally apply any Sonic Generations Shadow texture on the Forces one (except the shoe textures) and it fits perfectly. Same goes to the Shadow Gens model but its UVs are probably changed up much more. Anyway cool video! This is a pretty good insight on Shadow's different models throughout the games
I loved seeing the models comparison. I admired Shadow’s model in Sonic x Shadow Generations, just started playing the game and I enjoyed seeing him in action. ❤ The animation is so fluent and he is so expressive.

I prefer how they are sharp curves at the front instead of just being angles. I assume that originally, the yellow around the shoes and gloves were meant to be straps (as in, velcro straps), but that got retconned in literally the rest of the games, so meh there, but it looked hella cool back then and still do.]
Not that I'm an expert, but I was rather surprised just static the Amy Rose models have been, with arguably a good 10-15 year without hardly any change to the proportions or style... but I guess I was mostly looking at mainline models and not mobile. Still, I had to wonder, why remake the exact model and not re-licence it over and over? I mean, it's nearly identical between multiple games anyway, probably cost more to have it remade for the same result.
So hear me out... later models look better than SA2 in polish. But SA2 model just has the best overall design. The 06 Model is probably my second favorite for the face and shoes at the very least. I just don't like the thick rubber toy texture and how his body proportions are elongated but I realize that's likely to work better with human motion capture. I like the colors almost as much as in SA2 though. The modern models all look nearly identical with minor tweaks that I think improve it all the time. So I'll refer just to the most recent one from Sonic X Shadow Generations, which I DO like over all for the modern era. But I never liked the goofy gumby side mouth in 3D, I prefer the more tanned flesh color, I don't care for the gumdrop shaped inner ears (Issue with Sonic as well), I don't like that the muzzle doesn't dip down under the eyes and back up over the nose like it used to as it makes it look almost flat and straight across. His muzzle lacks shape that feels ingrained into the face and feels more like a place that was slapped onto his overall head. It's gotten better, just not quite to a style I REALLY like. The shoes aren't as bad as some years ago, but they're still very square-ish where before they were more rounded and curved. The hair is much longer feeling even if it actually isn't, but part of that is positioning. Like with Sonic, his hair doesn't come off as hardened spines curving out. They look more like inflated gelatin blobs that wiggle around. They also simply make the 2 spikes on the sides just curve up. The upper spike does curve out a bit but not by much. In SA2, you distinctly see the upper spike curves out to the side much more than the bottom spike. This seems like a detain no one would notice or care about, and not something that's part of his general silhouette. But the reason I do is because it's a unique thing they didn't have to do but makes him look more chaotic and twisted that they did. When you see him from a back diagonal angle, you always see his hair look as though every spine curves a different direction which is really cool. You SOMETIMES almost get that with other models too... but not often. Otherwise, his hair from the side almost does look similar to Sonic, and from the back and from it kinda has a star shape vs the rest which are these banana shapes... lol I also prefer Shadow's eyebrows in SA2. I mean it's a bit outdated, but I prefer that look to kinda give off a calm, but serious, glare (similar to 06's model I suppose) rather than almost looking like Knuckles' eyes and looking pissed all the time.
3:24 this model actually commits a sin on the Sonic series character design doctrine, which is that the character's mouths can never be in the center of the face, it's always to one side or the other. check out Sonic Frontiers, and if you use the camera in front of Sonic you will actually see his mouth flip from one side to the other side of his face.
You know, I always believed that Shadow's character model in Shadow the Hedgehog was recycled from Sonic Heroes. Perhaps the Shadow the Hedgehog model is like something of an improved version of its Sonic Heroes counterpart.
Besides Shadow's hands, which were modified to work with the guns, all of the character models in Shadow are taken from the PS2 version of Heroes (Said version having lower poly models than the other versions)

His best model after SA2 has to be Forces or Generations.
In regards to feeling soulless, I think the modern games (Generations onwards) have it the worst due to the lack of eyebrow movement when emoting resulting in mascot head syndrome. In my opinion, Heroes/Shadow has the best mesh (Doesn't tone down any of the facial features from the 2D art, particularly with eyebrows) and 06 has the best proportions (Deals with the crossed arms issue without making the characters look too lanky)
Need a Banjo Kazooie one sometime pls:-). I always liked their N&B redesign and its in 2 games technically since they're guest characters in Sega all stars racing 😎.
Is that pose on Riders Shadow a custom one or is it a successful import from the actual game? If the latter, then what plugin is necessary to import those Sega NN libraries animation files to Blender/3DS Max/Maya etc? Sega NN Tools can import the actual models from the supported games, but as of now, not model animations.
7:45 - I think what's going on there is your texture was imported poorly and what you are looking at there is supposed to be layered with transparency.
6:20 dash was made by hardlight while runners was made by sonic team, so unless they share models among their divisions at sega, which im slightly doubtful about due to how different a lot of dash/speed battle models look compared to the original versions, i assume the stark difference is due to that also how come you didnt show shadows console sonic boom models?
@ContentFreeTime ah thats a shame, i guess with the game being a wii u exclusive and with how badly it did, theres no widespread interest in ripping those models. pretty sure ive seen the boom models in the gmod workshop tho, so it shouldnt be too hard for someone to upload them elsewhere
i think shadow’s models suffer from a similar problem as sonic, where they’re technically impressive but have really wonky design. tall face, big hands, no muzzle curve, weird side mouth, i think the designs need to be cleaned up imo his best look is in heroes. such a beautiful model
In most of Shadow’s mainline game models, it looks like his quills stay relatively the same length. Unlike Sonic where his quills got noticeably shorter from Sonic Generations to Forces. It’s an interesting distinction.

Not sure - that's just how the model from The Models Resource website came.
Pretty sure the Model from SXSG is accessible now, not sure if it ever got uploaded standalone though
7:45 - I think what's going on there is your texture was imported poorly and what you are looking at there is supposed to be layered with transparency.
Could we potentially see all super shadow next?
That would be a short one since he's only been in like 5 different games, but I would like to do that eventually
I mean he's had a few mobile appearances. Maybe use that as a YT short if nothing else
Pleeease do Rough The Bat! ❤🦇
Rouge* 😅
I second this. Rouge is a special case and thus should be given top priority (I made like 4 or more puns/references here lol).
"A POLYGON!"

SA2 Model hands down.
06 model is easily the best one
06 Shadow remains the best
knuckles next pls
Wish you could of included the Sega Superstars model. It took a bit from the SA2 model.
sonic chronicles is giving sonic x
Do you have any way of getting a hold of the Shadow Android models
That Sonic riders model needs to be taken out back.....NOW
5:59 G.U.N. did, obviously.
were do you get the models. I have looked and havent found some of the ones youve covered
They're all from the Models Resource website
6:20 dash was made by hardlight while runners was made by sonic team, so unless they share models among their divisions at sega, which im slightly doubtful about due to how different a lot of dash/speed battle models look compared to the original versions, i assume the stark difference is due to that
also how come you didnt show shadows console sonic boom models?
Couldn't find them on the Models Resource website unfortunately
@ContentFreeTime ah thats a shame, i guess with the game being a wii u exclusive and with how badly it did, theres no widespread interest in ripping those models. pretty sure ive seen the boom models in the gmod workshop tho, so it shouldnt be too hard for someone to upload them elsewhere
Cool
Shouldve looked at the SEGA superstars model
can you do the koopalings?
I honestly prefer the pale look than the orange look
why the hell people don't like the 06 and riders model bro looks more mature
Wait, is that shadow’s actual model in sonic riders?
most likely, i think the proportions for the riders models are very wacky
No río 2016 model?
Sonic 06 is the best model
Why'd you skip Sonic Rivals?
Couldn't find the models
shadow was in sonic battle and thats 2d
how can i get these models?
models-resource.com

i think shadow’s models suffer from a similar problem as sonic, where they’re technically impressive but have really wonky design. tall face, big hands, no muzzle curve, weird side mouth, i think the designs need to be cleaned up
imo his best look is in heroes. such a beautiful model
Sonic heroes NAILED that transition, I think the sa2 model looks scary and bulky. It's giving animatronic
He is a lab grown hybrid what did you expect ?
@@androwaydie4081 them to improve the design from the SA2 bulky mess, which they did 🤪🤪
