A band so far ahead of its time with regard to musical acumen, musicianship, song writing & arranging. I love these guys and continuously listen to their songs close to 50 years later. A real unique & classic band.
The segue from the long instrumental workout back into the final vocal verse still surprises me--45 years later! What a fabulous, upbeat, complex, and exquisite song!!

They played in Fairmount Park in Philly for the first EARTH DAY Celebration & it was hard to believe our ears.They played this song as the finale & as complex and intricate as it is, their live version equalled or possibly surpassed the studio track. They were that multi-talented. LONG TIME SINCE but l stil recall that day vividly.
This and "Song of Job" are my favorite Seatrain songs. I was a senior in high school and always was impressed by the diversity in musical styles and arrangements that were pulled together to make it all work so beautifully.

Saw them again 2 years later at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in DC, sitting in high back velour seats overlooking the stage , smokin' weed ! I'm Willin' is my most played CD cut in my car even today. An unforgettable band which most people never heard of. Their loss. coalmaniac

Listening to The Blues Project through their albums and changes in personnel, one can hear them transitioning into Seatrain, who they ultimately became. Of course, personnel changes would occur as Seatrain as well. Their first album is fantastic as well, and I believe the first record for George Martin to produce following his work with the Beattles. Musical Greatness!
I do not think any group of the 70's can match Seatrain's production values, use of the fiddle, harmonies and rhythms and the depth of their content, which I think of as Biblical Rock. Thank you TH-cam for giving this extrordinary a platform to enjoy today. Super Starmountain

This is my favorite of their songs. I saw them many, many years ago, early 70's. As someone stated in the comments this song live is truly amazing and really hooked me. I was a fan from then on. This still gives me goose bumps..

Cool later to discover that George Martin produced it and a great job he did too! For all the heights he reached along with the Beatles, this must've been a welcome breath for him. Cheers!

A magical band on a magical day and in a magical time in life if you were young and optimistic about the possibility that we & the music were changing the world for the better. Then reality crashed the Dream & gradually it all went to hell. But I was glad we were naive enough to believe in it and lived momentarily in a time that offered us the chance to be part of an era that although very turbulent, was unlikel any that had existed before and would never again return. We were blessed to have been alive & part of it all.
I grew up in Salem and remember them as a sort of "local act", seeing them perform at both Crocker Park in Marblehead (their rehearsal space was in Marblehead above the Sail Loft) and at Stonehenge, up in Ipswitch. Peter also once picked me up hitchhiking between Salem and Beverly. Last year I heard Terry Gross interview Peter and when she was reviewing his musical career, she left out this group. He was very quick to correct the omission.

I do remember now reading how they rented a cottage or something for "Seatrain" with George producing and I think that it was a welcome vacation for George from the long stretch with Ringo and crew! ;- ])
Had seatrain .muz in his loved 13 Questions, Song of Job, Orange Blossom Special, and all the others. George Marttin was an awesome producer for them and the Beatles
Thanks for reminding me (if I ever knew) that George Martin produced Seatrain and The Marblehead Messenger. That would help to explain how awesomely good Seatrain sounded and why I couldn't stop playing them, especially 1970s Seatrain (which Out Where the Hills is off of, not The Marblehead Messenger which the vid photo implies.) Greene's violin is outrageous. Detect an influence on Queen? (beginning at 5:20...)
Stellar...difficult to categorize. Americana Prog-Pop? Obviously the masterful Richard Greene shines here and Peter Rowan was a stand out as well as Kulberg, but, listening now, I realize its the somewhat overlooked Lloyd Baskin who keeps the focus. The band was great because there were so many strong ingredients. I saw them once in Central Park. A show I'll never forget, nor will I this entire (2nd) album.

Gosh, I remember your album. On A+M. Right? It was pretty good. We played a lot at the record store that I managed.
I agree they were very much overlooked not really sure why great songs great producer who knew?
Wikipedia calls it "roots rock". I'd say it's much more akin to The Band than Creedence, both of which are considered roots rock.
