After watching Rabbi Abramson and Yad Veshem videos, I think the "low keyness" of the channel is best. The comment sections of those and other Jewish History channels are 🙄.
I thought that maybe I will give some additional context for the "Orthodox" part in the official name of Berek's unit you can see at 16:44. In original Polish, it's _Starozakonny_ - a traditional Polish synonym for "Jewish" (particularly in the religious sense), which can be literary translated as "of the old order/law", referencing the Christian concept of the "Old Covenant". I think that in time it perhaps become especially associated with Orthodox Judaism but simply "Jewish Lighthorse Regiment" might be a better translation. Maybe one could experiment with some neologisms to create a perfect translation? I'd say that something like "Oldcovenanter Lighthorse Regiment" would sound really badass.
I love how you changed the Gaon's hair color throughout the video as the years progressed. At one point when you mention "The American system" I was, like, oh right! This is after 1776! There's a US now! When are we going to cross the Atlantic and look and Jewish history in the Americas?
@@SamAronow How about the other Jewish Leaders with Davidic Descent the: Exilarchs. How are they compared to the Hasmoneans & Herodians in influence & prestige to the Jewish community.
Yay! Moses Mendelssohn coming up. I am looking forward to this. The Napoleonic era will be probably interesting too as it implemented emancipation in many places (a little at least). An ancestor of mine, Joseph Naumann (Cohn), apparently became an officer in the Prussian army during the German Wars of Liberation of 1813. He had to drop "Cohn" as a last name in exchange for promotion to lieutenant; at least if I believe what his greatgrandson wrote down in 1919. Anyway, I am intrigued that the Polish Army had Jewish officers 20 years earlier (even so in a very different way and of course the world of 1793 was very different from the world of 1813).
Binged the entire channel over the past few days so I was surprised when there was no next episode to watch. Great work keep it up, I’ll be waiting patiently for the next.
One more thing came to my mind as I was rewatching the video, regarding both the minorities of the PLC serving in the cavalry and the tragic battle of Praga. Alongside the Beardlings, among the defenders of Praga, were the remnants of all six of the Lithuanian Vanguard Regiments (Pułki Straży Przedniej Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego). The majority of their soldiers were the Lipka Tatars. In some sadly poetic way I find it fitting for the last stand of the old Commonwealth. Also, a bit of context for the fact that Polish-Lithuanian officers (in cavalry especially) were almost exclusively nobles is that the nobility of the PLC was significantly more numerous than in other European countries.
This is a really interesting channel. I am a Christian and don’t know much about different Jewish traditions and their histories so this is been fun to listen to.
The one thing I wanted to know that wasn’t covered is why it is called “the Pale of Settlement,” so I looked it up and it is pretty mundane: “Pale” in English has the it’s roots in Latin “Palus” meaning “stake.” So the “Pale of settlement” was like an enclosure surrounded by stake fence marking the boundaries.
The Pale of Settlement: origin of the large majority of the Western Hemisphere’s Jews, and birthplace of seven of Israel’s first eight prime ministers.

The tallest mountain in Australia is named after Kosciusko. But we pronounce it "Kozz-ee-oss-ko". It wasn't until I was 19-20 that I learned the name had anything to do with Poland.
Due to the lack of European historical information taught in American schools after WW2, it has been for me a curiosity as to the historical background of that region of Russia - the Pale. Some of us know of the Polish revolutionary Kosciuszko who assisted in our American Revolution among other act turned a bend in the Hudson river into Westpoint and knew he went back to help establish an independent Poland. Thank you for filling in a gap in historical understanding of Poland and it's partitioning.

I remember we were taught in the yeshiva that the conflict between hasidim and mithnagdim was much more violent (especially after the Gaon passed away on Sukkot, and the Mithnagdim attacked the hasidim for celebrating his death). Either way, great video!
Im a Christian and I came here in a search for the roots of antisemitism. I knew of the Pale of Settlement but understood only the most rudimentary aspects of it. Minor correction at 9:30. The conquest of the Mamluks happened under Selim I (Suleyman's father), becoming the first Ottoman Caliph. Although the observation of the encouragement of Jewish settlement is true for both rulers. Very useful video, this is mostly an unimportant correction given the video's actual content. Thanks for the great education!
13:26 onward, I just couldn't believe my ears. Late 18th century Polish monarch attempting an about-face right into US Constitutional modeled democracy? Nice.
The thing is that Poland had a long republican and 'democratic' tradition. It was a democracy limited to the members of the nobility but that nobility wasn't a 1% or less of the population (which was the norm in most of Europe) but something like 6-8%, all legally equal despite being hugely stratified economically. The Kings were elected and their power was severely limited (the Henrician Articles from 1573 were sort of a proto-constitution). Unfortunately, the system kinda stopped working efficiently in the middle of the 17th century and somehow dragged for over a century without the badly needed reform. Here is a lecture by Prof. Robert Frost trying to briefly explain the peculiarities of the Polish-Lithuanian political culture: th-cam.com/video/YwEttjNNxDE/w-d-xo.html As for Stanislaw August Poniatowski, he is a very complicated and controversial figure. The reforms culminating in the Great Sejm and the Constitution of 1791 were hardly his sole doing. In the eyes of many, he shortly afterwards betrayed all this work by not resisting Catherine's invasion in the following year strongly enough, instead rather quickly giving up completely.
Very interesting material. However, one note. The problem of Liberum Veto and the degradation of the political system of the Polish-Lithuanian Union is more complicated than it seems. I'll just point out that Liberum Veto is often confused with Liberum Rumpo. Liberum Veto itself functioned quite well in a situation where politics was in the hands of responsible and educated people, wealthy enough not to be exposed to corruption. After the catastrophe of the mid-seventeenth century, the noble's democracy heavilly degenerated. The repair of political system was disrupted by the agent influence of neighboring powers, corruption and the ambitions of the local magnates. And one more thing. Focusing full attention on the role of Russia in the Partitions of Poland does not allow us to recognize that the Prussia was the greatest beneficiary of Partitions. Btw. Tsarina Catherine II was Prussian origin - princess Sophie von Anhalt-Zerbst
It's been an amazing education for Jews and non-Jews alike. I hope to learn more about the rise of Jewish scientists, inventors, and secular Jewish thinkers of the 19th and 20th centuries. So far there has been little mention of the Scientific Revolution, The Age of Reason, and The Enlightenment which dragged the rest of humanity into our modern world. It would also be great to have more bios on the influential half-Jews and quarter-Jews that emerged in Europe and North America.
I'm pretty sure the Ottoman Sultan Selim the Grim conquered the Mamluke Sultanate in 1517. He was the one that conquered Mecca and Medina as a result and was proclaimed the official Caliph of Sunni-Islam.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm pretty sure that the uniform Berek was depicted wearing in this video is a uniform of the Army of a certain Duchy that was created in 1807. @@SamAronow BTW can you recommend any sources about Jews serving in the light cavalry units of the Commonwealth prior to the Beardlings, as you mentioned in the video? The Vilma Gaon was primarily responsible for the establishment of modern Israel. He believed that when 600,000 Jews study Torah in Yerushalayim the Moshiach will come. The city of Shklov financed the aliah.
R shneur zalman actually was the only student to my knowledge that kept his masters asceticism for the populace in practice called “hiskafia” and “hishapcha”. Yes he did take away fasting but their was still a glimmer of asceticism.
In this part of Europe or the Austrian Empire, what's the tradition of Jewish spouses taking last names? Like would a Jewish husband take the name of his wife?

I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm pretty sure that the uniform Berek was depicted wearing in this video is a uniform of the Army of a certain Duchy that was created in 1807.
BTW For anyone interested in getting a deeper understanding of the peculiar Polish-Lithuanian political system and how it became so dysfunctional, while also demonstrating an ability to reform itself (although too late), I recommend a lecture by Prof. Robert Frost:

This will not be Kosciusko’s last appearance on the channel.
@@SamAronow I am very glad to hear that. I wasn't even expecting that, as I was specifically talking about the possibility of hearing more about Berek Joselewicz (also, maybe about his son Józef Berkowicz also known as Joseph Berkovitz or Berkowitz).
@@Artur_M. Joselewicz will also return, but in a different video.
@@SamAronow BTW can you recommend any sources about Jews serving in the light cavalry units of the Commonwealth prior to the Beardlings, as you mentioned in the video?
Also, I need to pay more attention to what I'm writing. I had to edit my original comments due to two errors (random "of" where it shouldn't be and "interesting" instead of "interested").
@@Artur_M. You’re in luck, because all the early sources I found were in Polish, so you’ll find it much easier to access.
"Hot takes" lol. I like it
May I ask what program you use to create your maps? Kind regards.
Adobe Illustrator. However, the map templates are property of Omniatlas (omniatlas.com/ )
@@SamAronow Thanks! I really enjoy your 'classes' :)
How about the other Jewish Leaders with Davidic Descent the: Exilarchs. How are they compared to the Hasmoneans & Herodians.
I still wonder, are you related to that aronowich?
The Vilma Gaon was primarily responsible for the establishment of modern Israel. He believed that when 600,000 Jews study Torah in Yerushalayim the Moshiach will come. The city of Shklov financed the aliah.
Small correction traditionally Jewish males wear tefilin only at the morning prayer otherwise great video
Hey not to bother you but it was actually selim the stern who beat the mamluks
R shneur zalman actually was the only student to my knowledge that kept his masters asceticism for the populace in practice called “hiskafia” and “hishapcha”. Yes he did take away fasting but their was still a glimmer of asceticism.
Will you go into the history of Zionism and the State of Israel?
In this part of Europe or the Austrian Empire, what's the tradition of Jewish spouses taking last names? Like would a Jewish husband take the name of his wife?
Correction: Alya is really pronounced Ah-Lee-Ya *(meaning to elevate) Perhaps you should consider having a observant Jew on your staff to look over your videos?
Poland has the highest percentage of Jews, followed by Belarus and Lithuania, then Ukraine, Romania and Hungary
13:20 you're not saying that poland-lithuania was an independent poland? surely......!
Century of Warfare, World at War, and, of course, Heritage: Civ.&TheJews had slow starts but became the staple sources for western history/comparative religion classrooms just as the popularity of Sam Aronow's series will rise. Spruce up the animation, have guest voice actors & add 5-10min. more than 1 would & Nebula would sign Sam in a heartbeat.
