Hi Tim. I agree 100% with your views on watch straps not necessarily being supplied by the watch manufacturers. I guess if you're a collector who buys for investment purposes, and don't really wear them an enjoy them🤔. Great video and excellent guitar 🎸 solo to close out with. I on behalf of the majority of your subscribers think you're a great Guy!👍
Beautiful piece of music. Thank you. Original straps, taken off for later use or resale. I want that part of the watch to stay as pristine as possible. Great ideas for strap suppliers. The edge dressing was a wonderful idea with the fountain pen ink.
Greetings from Stuttgart. I’ve been enjoying your videos for some time now - I genuinely appreciate your thoughts on watches. Keep up the great work. Music at the end was icing on the cake... cheers.
gralex32 - Yep! 👍🏼 The grain of the Rios 1931 'French' is really good for vintage and/or retro & neo-vintage watches. If you have 2 or 3 watches in your collection you can do worse than having 2 or 3 different colourways of that strap alone.
I will often use third party leather and rubber straps - I’m looking for a new racing (not rally) strap and I’ll check out your recommended vendors. Thanks for the music !!
I always like to have the original strap if possible even though I often take it off and put a better one on the watch. Always nice when reselling a watch to have all the original components. Really enjoy your videos! You are a true renaissance man!!! Alles gute!
Hello Tim! In this video you mention that you believe the rivets on the Eichmuller strap are a mistake because they don’t go all the way through both layers of the strap. I have owned two IWC big pilot examples and the original IWC straps on both were the same construction. Perhaps they were better quality than the Eichmuller but the back of the rivets were also concealed between the layers. Just fyi
If the original leather strap is old and nasty, then no I wouldn't keep or use it. I would keep and use the original buckle, etc. on a new leather strap. Good video. Thank you.
we have 1 watchmaker, habring2, and 1 strap manufacturer (they even like each other) Hirsch. I think they have/had the patent on waterproof leather straps. I got a few by them, a normal one lets say you need 22 (lugs) - 18 (buckle) manufactured for you, grey suede in my case for the bronze oris, around 100.
I say no to original straps. Maybe yes for something like the Tudor Black Bay, when is that relevant for the overall design. But in general I rather choose from other manufacturers.
On the maintenance side it is also important to condition the inside part of the strap before using and during wear once a while. As that part getting exposed to sweat. The salt from the sweat destroying the fibers of leather and it is getting cracked.
I agree with you regarding originality. Bracelets are nice to have the original, leather doesn't bother me as I'm likely to change it anyway. In either case it isn't typically a dealbreaker for me but can definitely have an affect on price.
Very enjoyable video. I'm much the same. Always original bracelets, but leather straps, not so much. Thanks very much for the very nice playing. Always love the jazz segments.
Great video as always. I also like straps made by Hirsch, I'm just not sure if it's german or austrian company, but for about 20 € you can get realy nice straps. Of course, they have a lot of higher end products as well.
...find i swap-out straps but tend to wear original bracelets...also, what about storage ? recently moved my straps from pillows in watchbox to layflat in travelcases...
Tim, I enjoyed the video! The first thing I do on Friday is watch (pun intended) your latest video, is the highlight of my day. Keep up the great work. Received my Dan Henry Chrono in the mail yesterday, great value and well-built watch...you should review one someday.
Interesting video thanks. Personally I like to change the leather strap on any new quality watch I buy and I keep the original strap in mint condition. - As you say, you can buy good quality straps for little money. Ideally I prefer straps with quick release pins, so you can change them out easily and often.
I highly recommend a deployant clasp on a leather strap to help it last. The deplayant clasp will allow you to fasten the strap without repeatedly bending the leather and causing it to crack.
I own a 9ct. 1960s manual wind Longines. I recently replaced it's strap with a Hirsch leather band that was almost identical to the orriginal...and I retained the orriginal gold plated Longines buckle. For me it was important.
Good video. I got the same oris pointer recently, and I really hate the Hirsch I have it on so I'm looking for a better strap, but I think it would be too unoriginal to copy your herzog strap so the search continues...
I keep the original strap, along with the case, papers etc because it increases potential resale value. But I will wear my watches with various after market straps to suit various moods or occasions.
I mostly agree about what you say about steel straps though in some cases like old seikos a company called strapcode produces better quality than seiko ever did. In fact talking about seikos and in particular the famous Alpinist ( I have one ) is also famous on every forum for people saying : Get it off that Seiko faux crocodile its rubbish. . An aftermarket decent leather strap is an essential. Thanks for the info on those companies I have not heard of before. Will be studying them as an alternative to some quality ( and yes they are quality ) but uber pricy Italian companies . Cheers Tim
When I buy an expensive watch, I remove the original strap and put on a good quality new generic strap (I like Hadley Roma). I save the expensive original new strap, just in case I decide to sell the watch (buyers want new looking straps that are made for the brand).
No love for Fluco straps? Hirsch, makes good cow leather straps at well. Hadley-Roma straps has a good selection of exotic leathers to choose from, all of good quality. Edit: when it comes to the original leather or rubber strap, no I don't not care. original bracelet if possible, yes.
I like original strap with the watch for the collectors side of things. It gives you the option to use other straps and to also sell the watch as a complete piece. I took my 'expensive' Vulture Minerva Liscio off and put the original Orient strap back on my orient. In that case I prefered the original strap. However I will put all kinds of sports watches on rubber and plastic strap which are not origional (aka NATOs and Diver straps) lol.
I have a Roger Dubuis Easy Diver and I asked them how much it would cost for a new rubber strap. Euros 300!!! just for two pieces of rubber. I went on Ebay Euros 40.
Hi, Tim. I like your tip and bought the same Eichmuller strap for my Seagull 1963. Nevertheless I was very upset because de 18mm strap was more like 19mm making it almost impossible to fit without damaging. Did you have the same problem with yours?
The best way to preserve a leather strap is to use deployant buckles. Branded strap will fetch a better price for your watch, and a strap with the same brand of watch will have an “original “ look thus will keep better value. Best watch video finishing . 🎸
I put back on the original Bulova bracelet on my watch . It is from 1950 . I just feel that it is part of the history. Now all my watches have the original straps or bracelets .
On vintage watches, original leather straps wear out, even get disgusting from use. But it would be nice to get the original signed clasp if there was one. I'm not sure an original Rolex strap really has nicer leather than a Rios. But it definitely has a bigger markup.
We live in China. What I do with straps is I send in the originals to a strap maker. They copy the stuff 1:1 and give me this same style strap at custom length.
I just want the original clasp, in some cases it may be worth purchasing the offer with the original strap (assuming it has the clasp attached!) if the other offers lack the original clasp.
Original straps are not necessary. They are just another way to make money with a brand name. By the way, there are some great Italian made watch straps too. (Nothing agains made in Germany 😉 )
I'm so late to the party. I think the party may be over? Shall I perhaps simply lurk here? Until the *next* party? ...maybe. I think so. Whilst I wait I will talk to myself. Abate the boredom. I believe that the original EVERYTHING is important for EVERY watch. How do I know what will be a Paul Newman Daytona in 50-60 years? I do not buy expensive watches. So called 'Luxury' watches?, I doubt I will get the opportunity to even handle many. But I always keep the original everything. I don't wear my watches on bracelets. If my watches are inexpensive, the bracelets they come with are too, often they are afterthought only. Something to make the watch look inviting in advertising and sales literature. The watchmakers know I will change the bracelet because they have (wisely) put all their manufacturing costs towards the watch and supplied it to me upon connected links of metal fecal matter. So I buy straps. Nato straps, Leather straps, Silicone straps, Cordura straps, Woolen straps,... I have dozens of them! 18 or 20mm? I better buy one of each. Shit! 22mm width. I better buy some 22's. We are all the same I suspect. I grew up in the 70's and early '80's. If you lived in Australia like me, the term 'Jap Crap' will be familiar. Japanese manufacturing was synonymous with generic brand names and (erroneously I believe) inferior quality. And the men that were the age I am now in the 1970's remembered the 2nd War: The Japanese people were not remembered fondly back then. Yet now Seiko is an historic marque. The "Pouge'. The 'Bullhead'. Very collectable. Will any of my mass produced inexpensive watches be sought after in 50 years? I can speculate. But I can not know. Keep everything. Keep it in plastic. Keep it Dry. Keep it Safe. Would you buy the vintage Daytona with original box and papers over a vintage Daytona in generic protective clothing? So would I. And I'll leave with a thought: Are the Chinese Parnis's , San Martin's etc. today's 'Jap Crap' and tomorrows 'Bullhead'?
Meiner Meinung nach muss ein Lederarmband nicht original sein, wobei die Schließe schon der Uhrenmarke entsprechen sollte. Metallarmbänder müssen auch bei mir original sein. Gruß aus Hannover Oni
It made my day to hear the beautiful music. I was not expecting such a switch, but it was a nice surprise!

Thank you!
please come to play in Paris, we're praying for rain !! Rios 1931 is my favorite strap brand.
gralex32 - Yep! 👍🏼
The grain of the Rios 1931 'French' is really good for vintage and/or retro & neo-vintage watches.
If you have 2 or 3 watches in your collection you can do worse than having 2 or 3 different colourways of that strap alone.
I’ve. Ever heard you play before... Bravo my friend! Bravo! 👏🏼
Herzog.
Sounds good, I like the colour.
Thanks!

I changed straps and bracelets on cheap Timex watches in the past, but never on anything expensive. Thanks for the music at the end!
Love the playing. What about the special plier tool for removing Rolex spring bars?

Tim, I really really like your video talks. Ps. I think you ment padded instead of tapering (Herzog strap)
I think he meant tapered in thickness, like 4mm at the lugs tapering to 2.5mm halfway to the end a.
Come for the watch talk, stay for the guitar. As always, thanks.
If you are a poor Pole go for K.Reda straps, well made straps from Poland, I use them by myself
we have 1 watchmaker, habring2, and 1 strap manufacturer (they even like each other) Hirsch. I think they have/had the patent on waterproof leather straps. I got a few by them, a normal one lets say you need 22 (lugs) - 18 (buckle) manufactured for you, grey suede in my case for the bronze oris, around 100.
You are a great man with a great channel, Tim. Cool and cultured. Cheers from Los Angeles.
Thanks for watching!
I say no to original straps. Maybe yes for something like the Tudor Black Bay, when is that relevant for the overall design. But in general I rather choose from other manufacturers.
Great vid, thank you for the bonus guitar riff. Superlative. Ciao.
On the maintenance side it is also important to condition the inside part of the strap before using and during wear once a while. As that part getting exposed to sweat. The salt from the sweat destroying the fibers of leather and it is getting cracked.

That was some amazing guitaring mate .. enjoyed that .. you are very talented! Love your love of watches too.
Very enjoyable video. I'm much the same. Always original bracelets, but leather straps, not so much. Thanks very much for the very nice playing. Always love the jazz segments.
Tim, the only man in Germany to dress so elegantly in 42c summer heat.
Do you have any recommendations for less common sizes like 23 or 26 mm?
Unfortunately not. This is always difficult. My problem is 19 mm. I have a few watches with this lug width and it is a drama ...
Caseback Watches
I ended up buying a bespoke band for my 23mm watch (and paying ~$200!)
Learned a lot, thanks for the knowledge.
Hi Tim. I would call it “cushioning” as opposed to “tapering “. Just trying to be helpful, love your videos.
Thanks!
Tim, I enjoyed the video! The first thing I do on Friday is watch (pun intended) your latest video, is the highlight of my day. Keep up the great work. Received my Dan Henry Chrono in the mail yesterday, great value and well-built watch...you should review one someday.
Thanks for the kind comment, George! Dan Henry is on the list.
Tim, you should really play more often in your videos!
Thanks for the info of straps , I learned .
Interesting video thanks. Personally I like to change the leather strap on any new quality watch I buy and I keep the original strap in mint condition. - As you say, you can buy good quality straps for little money. Nice guitarplay Sir! Rosenberg Trio ;)
Loved the video, although I’m a through and through bracelet guy.
Nice straps from Korea🇰🇷
Good vid man. Interesting commentary. Liked and subscribed.

Love the music brother. 🥃🥃. Good vedio helpful 👍
Thank you!

Seiko seems to be an exception where you have an aftermarket with bracelets of the same or superior quality
Yes if you are talking about an omega alligator strap with a foldover clasp
When I buy an expensive watch, I remove the original strap and put on a good quality new generic strap (I like Hadley Roma). I save the expensive original new strap, just in case I decide to sell the watch (buyers want new looking straps that are made for the brand).

Wonderful video with great info and my god a Django Reinhardt performance on top of it all! His music is very difficult to play well done!
Thank you!
Great vid and music, Tim!
What about Hirsch?
Di-Modell and Fluco made good affordable leather straps too
Bought a few Fluco straps and I'm really happy with them.
Agreed Fluco are great. I have a few now. They compare to the really expensive brands.
@@GFWatch Thanks for that Info
I have a Roger Dubuis Easy Diver and I asked them how much it would cost for a new rubber strap. Euros 300!!! just for two pieces of rubber. I went on Ebay Euros 40.
Im looking for a leather strap for my vintage rolex oyster not bothered about genuine rolex but want good quality leather for good price
I keep my lether straps hydrate with a bit of hand cream every week or so or mink oil every few months
Hi, Tim. I like your tip and bought the same Eichmuller strap for my Seagull 1963. Nevertheless I was very upset because de 18mm strap was more like 19mm making it almost impossible to fit without damaging. Did you have the same problem with yours?
No, mine was 18 mm.
Spot on Tim. you never mentioned the Nato style.
The best way to preserve a leather strap is to use deployant buckles.

I make my own strap and I use nice materials with the cheap method. It's fun hobby and I can use scraps of horween
Can you analyze craig shipp? 🙏
Great video
My tissot PR100 have they own strap. not normal chape.
We live in China. What I do with straps is I send in the originals to a strap maker. They copy the stuff 1:1 and give me this same style strap at custom length.
Kaufmann made in India. I met the owner at cheap ymca motel in kuala Lumpur. He created kaufmann & sell his leather goods to german retailers
You make me laugh . Lol Still good information . Thanks . ) Ps . I pay around $20 us for a leather strap . No more . ( I do have a $40 one ).
I just want the original clasp, in some cases it may be worth purchasing the offer with the original strap (assuming it has the clasp attached!) if the other offers lack the original clasp.
The clasp is more important than a strap soaked with sweat of the previous owner.
Your strap....your Style!

🎸🎶👍😊
Metal must be original and leather who cares must be good quality...
never again .........
you are pronouncing yugoslavia all wrong 😂 (but who cares anyway)
Sorry for that. I thought this was the correct english pronunciation.
Not original? Not interested.
That is the most terrible background on all of TH-cam.
So at least sort of record on my site 😉
Time......for Django. Nice.
