AFRO AUSTRALIA: The African Diaspora In Australia

- Fun fact: Australia had it's own Black Panther Party! The African diaspora in Australia as we know it is relatively recent. Over 70% of African emigrants to Australia are from Southern and Eastern Africa.
That said, the oldest foreign artifacts ever discovered in Australia are coins minted by the medieval kingdom of the Kilwa Sultanate - the equivalent of modern-day Tanzania - which indicates trade with Africa from as early as the 12th century!
Africans arrived in Australia on the first fleet of British ships in 1788. Have you heard of the Billy Blue, John Caesar or Black Jack Anderson? Did you know that much of the money that went into establishing British colonies in Australia was financed by Britain’s involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade?
We look at the African diaspora in Australia past and present - I guarantee you will learn something you didn't know before!

As an Afrikan living in Australia, i would like to tell you its not easy to prosper here. The system, especially public authorities, target black kids and their parents. It seems that Nyadol Nyuon no longer practises law. She probably works w Melbourne University.

About 400,000 people of African origin were living in Australia in 2020. This represents 1.6% of Australia's population. Thats a large amount for a small country of 25 million.

“One of the ten thousand-odd descendants here also on my own quest for learning lineage”.
There is a book called ‘Black Founders’ by Cassandra Pybus. John Randall (c. 1764-1822)
John Randall, a Black American, was found guilty on 14 April 1785 at Manchester Quarter Sessions of stealing a steel watch chain. Sentenced to 7 years transportation he was sent to the Ceres hulk while he waited to embark on the Alexander on 6 January 1787. He arrived in Sydney in January 1788 as part of the First Fleet. It is believed that he had been a slave of Captain John Randall of Stonington, Connecticut, United States of America. When he later joined the New South Wales Corps he gave his place of birth as New Haven, Connecticut.
Randall married Esther Howard/Harwood on 21 February 1788; she died on 11 October 1789. By then he was employed as a game keeper by Governor Arthur Phillip. Randall married Mary Butler on 5 September 1790; they had two children. he also had a daughter Frances who was born by an unknown mother before 1792. On 29 November 1792 Randall was granted sixty acres at number 92 Northern Boundary Farms, next to his fellow shipmate (and future son-in-law) John Martin.
The story of John Randall is a favourite of Brad Manera, a senior historian and curator at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park. His name is believed to have come from his slave master in the American colonies. Manera says Randall served with the British Army's 63rd regiment, the Manchesters, but at the end of the American Revolution he was discharged, and living in England.
"Unemployment after every war is rife, and he ended up getting transported for picking a pocket in 1785, and in 1788 he found his way to New South Wales," Manera told The Feed.
Randall's military background helped him access a privileged position as one of the NSW Governors' gamekeepers -- people who were sent out to shoot kangaroos.
