    *Whoopsie!!!*
    Re: "Borsigiana" -- Several errors.
The photo used over your description of 'borsie' is not a borsie. As you said, borsie is a climber, but the photo shows a plant with rather tight nodes, so I'd say it is just a young "regular" M.d.

    • @johnjhill3
      @johnjhill3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +71

MORE IMPORTANTLY, at least with botanists (which we all consider ourselves) --
Borsigiana is Absolutely "the same" as Monstera deliciosa. It is a variant with a different growth habit but genetically 99.99% identical to 'regular' M.d.
The official names are (A) Monstera deliciosa [including all cultivars] and
      (B) Monstera deliciosa "Borsigiana"
Unfortunately, there is no specifying name for "Not Borsigiana" and that makes things muddy for hobbyists who want, ummmm, that type.

One thing I will say I like the most about Adonsonii that many ppl dont discuss is the leaves have an almost reflective quality under directed spot light. If you have one use the light on your phone to shine over the leaves and watch how the reflective sheen lights up. So beautiful.

Acuminata is hemiepiphytic, hence it grows long aerial roots. It starts its life as an epiphyte on a tree and then grows aerial roots, which reach all the way down to the ground. Even juvenile cuttings start growing quite long aerial roots, which makes it easier to distinguish it from Adansonii. My small cutting already has several 15-20cm long aerial roots just dangling down without any moss pole or something to cling on.

Hi, love your videos. Doing a great job.
On the Monstera deliciosa VS Monstera deliciosa var. borsigiana. Which one do I have? One of the most frequently asked questions at the moment I think.
From the sources I have this is actually the same species. Only variations. Borsigiana is not acknowledged as it’s own subspecies by botanists and is a “made up” name. Personally though I think it’s fair to separate the two.
There’s some confusion to how you can separate the two. The absolutely best way is to look at the distance between the stem nodes. Very short “real” Monstera Deliciosa. Longer Monstera Deliciosa var. Borsigiana. The two have different ways to grow where the Borsigiana is more of a climber.
The “real” Deliciosa will definitely get bigger leaves. Possibly more rows of fenestration and bigger “ruffles”. But the borsigiana can get these features as well when they get older.
If you buy a cheap Monstera D. It’s 99% that you get the Bosigiana. If a shop sell the “real” one they will likely know and give it a higher price tag. But you can be lucky.
Thanks again for your your videos. You definitely don’t have to apologize for not having all the info about every rare plant. You still have more info than we could ever dig up!

Haha I just rewatched this video and realized how incredibly out of date it is.
Lots of monstera that aren’t mentioned that you can get in the market now and how common obliqua peru has become, but how it’s different forms hasn’t been mentioned. How monstera borsigiana actually isn’t a real thing and how the different varieties of deliciosa aren’t mentioned. How monstera peru isn’t a monstera at all. It’s philodendron karstenianum.
There’s so much that’s known about monstera that is worth knowing that isn’t mentioned and how much misinformation that is actually in this video. Kaylee, I highly suggest you update this video! 💕

I've recently bought an adansonii and now one of the new leaves has white on it and I'm freaking out. It's still rolled up, so I can't really see what it looks like and whether the white will maybe still turn green or smt. I know chances of sudden variegation in a green plant are low, but it is possible right? It's so exciting to watch it grow a little bit everyday. I really hope it stays white, and that when I propagate it, it grows new variegated leaves, ahhhhh!!

"Monstera dilacerata" is actually a name that was mistakenly applied to some specimens of Epipremnum pinnatum as well as some kind of Monstera that I'm forgetting right now. It's not a valid name for a species of Monstera.
In any case, what you've shown as a picture of dilacerata is a plant that's popping up for sale in São Paulo, Brazil, and matches all the descriptions of a variety of Monstera deliciosa known as Monstera deliciosa var. sierrana, which is known from one specific area of Mexico (just like M. deliciosa var. borsigiana is, although the latter happens to be very common in cultivation). No one's really sure how this plant came to be for sale in Brazil and if it is in fact that same variety or simply another one that has evolved the same leaf form (due to extra exposure to high winds, for example), but from its appearance, it matches the description of var. sierrana. You can see from the shape of the leaves (heart shaped), the visible venation in a lighter, yellowy green and the apparent texture of the leaves that it basically looks like a regular deliciosa except that the splits take up a much greater proportion of the leaf surface (a bit like the 90% hole thing, but for deliciosas).

So I watched this last night and coincidentally went to the plant shop today for some soil, happened to see some small monsteras on a table and thought let’s check the name... monstera obliqua, for about 8 euros. I’m honestly not convinced though, they looked a lot like mini deliciosas but it was a respectable garden centre so I’m just confused now

The adansonii archipelago is getting more and more common. One of my friend knows the person who was lucky enough to get one with a defect, and she has since spread it in sweden. Its still expensive (800-2000 on a swedish bidding site), but they are becoming alot more common since people propagate them and sell on here

Don’t know if anyone else has commented on this but both ‘albo’ and ‘alba’ actually mean ‘white’ in Latin.
Yellow variegation would be referred to as ‘aureo’ or ‘aurea’ which mean ‘gold’.
E.g. ‘f. aureo marginata’/‘f. marginata aurea’ would refer to yellow variegated margins on the leaf

Loved the video, some wishlist plant in there!! Wonderful job, very informative!
If you are looking at making more plant indexes I would love to see a hoya and maybe marantas?
For variegation, I usually prefer white to yellow....but really I love the silver. Scindapus pictus kinda silver, or even the monstera siltepecaean. Usually the more unique, the better.

actually, Monstera borseriana described by Koch in 1862 and later by Engler in 1879, as well as Monstera deliciosa var. borseriana described in 1908 by (Koch) Engler & Krause are all invalide names. Hence, only the name Monstera deliciosa (Liebmann) is valide. As always in nature, variation is occuring. Therefore, Monstera deliciosa might have lots of different varietys while still be the same species

You can have a tropical garden nursery if you move to Thailand or Philippines. You can get a nice big land with fertile soil with nice house . And you can grow your business from there . Try Philippines. Its heaven on earth and citizens speaks english . And you can hire gardener and house care who clean and cooks while you live your life and travelling. Hehehe ... love your Channel . I'm purchased 3 because you mentioned it on your videos. My next one will be the holy grail with price to match . Hehehe... England has lots of amazing botanical gardens . Do one more playlist of tour of those botanicals. Hello from Toronto.

Just wanna point out, in horticulture and botany; the word "Alba", which is associated here as yellow, typically means white.
Nigra means black, so Alba is it's counter part.
I know the white variegated monstera are called "albo" but it isn't actually what they should be called.
Just a tid bit of info before anyone watching goes around calling "alba" yellow and "albo" white in a general sense. Monstera are the only plants I've ever seen where this naming occurs.

beautifull video! but isn't the term mutation wrong used? a mutation is something that carries on the genes, in case of variegata its split in 2 types, with each type again split in 2. if it's an mutation, then the seeds WILL carry it on to the offspring, it can be a stable mutation or a unstable mutation (convert back to all green or white) and if the variegata isn't passed down to the seeds then it is an MODIFICATION, witch can be stable or onstable. this is per example beautifull to see with variegated Sambucus, the classic albovariegata one's do not give it to the seedlings, but i have a rare cultivar (called Impde) that is onstable albovariegated and i got seedlings that are variegated too.
