    Having Scottish genes must have given me a cheap pallete. Heaven Hill's Evan WIlliams Bottled in Bond is my go to. Wild Turkey 101 is my 'treat'. Buffalo Trace is lovely, so is Elijah Craig small batch and occassionally I'm a sucker for Maker's Mark. My Gallon Jug O' Infinity is a unique blend of several bourbons, WT rye, and a small amount of Goslings for those Carribean cask notes Very impressed with your selection and knowledge of American whiskey there in upside down land :D

    My preferred bourbon is Eagle Rare 10 year from Buffalo Trace Distillery. It may be simple on the palate, but it goes well in pretty much any cocktail, is easy to sip and is relatively inexpensive.

    The other thing that's REALLY taking off re. variations in American whiskey is the use of a wider range of both yeasts AND grains--many of the newer distilleries are finding "heirloom" corns and ryes to use which have different levels of starch than the standard ones which greatly affects the yield and flavor. The other interesting thing about all those barrels is that a LOT of them head for Scotland to age Scotch in. In one amazing deal to guarantee the supply and quality of their barrels, Glenmorangie bought something like 10,000 acres of American oak and made a deal with Brown/Foreman (Jack Daniels, Old Forester, Woodford Reserve and more) which unlike most other distillers has their OWN proprietary cooperage, to let them use the oak in return for sending the whiskey-aged barrels to Scotland for their exclusive use afterwards.

    It is not true that _all_ American Whiskies have to be aged in new, charred, American Oak barrels. Although the labelling laws are interesting and the predominant styles meet that criteria :-). For a whiskey to be labelled as "Burbon" it must use new oak barrels. But you can have American Whiskey aged in other ways. Just a single example, Ironroot Republic Hubris is primarily aged in used European oak barrels so it has to be labelled as a "Corn Whiskey" (not a Burbon).

    With the Tennessee whiskey I know most people thank of Jack Daniels but George Dickel is the one I think of. And they have another step they chill there whiskey down then run it through the charcoal. I have been told they use a thicker layer of charcoal to.

    • @BehindtheBar
      @BehindtheBar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dickel 😋 and yes, the charcoal step is what differentiates Tennessee whiskey, but it also meets the requirements for bourbon!

    • @dlfendel2844
      @dlfendel2844 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BehindtheBar BTW, Dickel is fast becoming one of the largest suppliers of spirits to those doing blends and startups who haven't got their own stock yet--I'm told second only to MGP for doing this. The difference is that those using MGP say so, whereas Dickel prohibits disclosing this via a Non-Disclosure Agreement for some reason known only to them.

    • @Quintinohthree
      @Quintinohthree 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What makes corn whiskeys not bourbons isn't their higher corn content but their not aging in charred new American oak barrels. A corn whiskey aged in charred new American oak barrels is also simultaneously a bourbon. Jack Daniels at 80% corn is a straight Tennessee bourbon corn whiskey, as is Dickel at 84%. You can be both.

    You can't classify American and Canadian whiskies together. They are not even similar in the making, let alone interchangeable. And as much as it pains me as a Canadian to say it, American whiskey is much better.

    • @BehindtheBar
      @BehindtheBar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Adam! I think we do make it clear that Canadian whisky is quite different from the States, we go in to it in more detail here:
      th-cam.com/video/pDG74vBOqAU/w-d-xo.html
      But I think given the similarity of the grains used it’s not unreasonable to have them in the same discussion (the same way that Scotch, Irish and Japanese can be loosely grouped with similar grains and styles of distilling) although we’ll of course look at Canadian in greater detail another time!

    • @adamlogan384
      @adamlogan384 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BehindtheBar it sounds like you're just saying that it's also whisk(e)y and therefore similar. But if you're comparing within the larger category of whisk(e)y, that argument can't be valid. 4 grains (wheat, rye, barley, corn) are responsible for 95%+ of all the worlds' whisk(e)y (guessing off the top of my head, with no qualification of any sort lol), so to me that doesn't constitute an argument for similarity within that larger category.
      And mostly, it's a combo of regulation and blending/aging styles that make the two types dissimilar. Canadian regs allow for sweeteners, colourings, etc. Not to mention the separate aging of the different grain whiskies before blending them together, instead of making the "whole" whisk(e)y as one spirit. I can't see them as similar based on those points. And as I said before, I wish we were better at whisk(e)y here, but we just haven't figured it out yet I guess.
      Please don't take my comments the wrong way. I've discovered your channel recently and become a big fan. And even if I feel like you're sometimes wrong or mistaken, I very much enjoy your videos.

There are some technically correct bits in the article, but I know a lot of Canadians who will argue they are not American. I also know a lot of Mexican citizens who take affront to be calling American. That being said, you primarily are discussing whiskeys made in the United States of America.
