You can hear the tone in her voice change when she starts talking about how some pesticides affect the learning ability of the bees. It sounds as if she's about to burst into tears. it's adorable
How do the bees get their nectar and pollen? Do you let them out onto the field to collect it from flowers or do you bring it into the lab and give it to them?
Interesting idea, but the answer is much simpler. Look at the beginning of the video. The room is lit with red lamps, but she's using the white LED lamp on her phone to light the box. So, there are two places you can still see the monochromatic red light: 1) In darker areas/shadows where the white light doesn't shine. (So instead you see the ambient red light.) 2) On the wings, which are shiny and don't disperse the incoming light, so you see a reflection of say the wall behind, like a mirror.
Bees are amazing creatures, their products have fantastic properties. A bee keeper told me that in Ukraine in the area of Chernobyl, the honey has no radioactivity because toxins are removed when the bees process it & is safe to eat. I find that amazing.
A more specific explanation is the red light turns on and off, then the camera takes a picture, then the red light turns on and off... over and over, enough ties a second that the eye won't notice. Then when they take the video, they play those pictures at what a normal video fps would be so the actual time is accelerated in the video.
Don't ignore all the other insects! Bees are not the only pollinators of importance, just the ones we tend to pay more attention to since most of the pollinators we actively manage/notice are bees of various sorts.
I've got a similar thing. I have periods of insomnia or where my inner clock just stops working. I've used calm music at a low volume for a long time, but ASMR or or people talking in a calm manner seems to work better. I've used podcasts or playlists of videos of people with smooth voices talking calmly to good success. Recently i found the channel "Good night Crendor" where "WoW Crendor" tries out this stuff, and it has worked great. Please share if you have good ones.
There's a thing called ASMR that some people use as a sleeping aid, and several youtube channels having people talking in a calm and/or monotone way with that exact purpose. I guess these bee videos would fit that criteria.
Somehow, I was never concerned about bumblebees... the myth here says, that they can't even sting (although I now know, that they have a stinger). I used to pet them in the past, when they were all over a flower. Fluffy, round little things.
You're right, it's not poop, its merely nectar that has been stored in a stomach like sack and then regurgitated into a chamber, and more than one bee does this to fill the chamber, and it is then mixed with pollen and dead bee husks while being fanned.
I really liked your video. I was wondering were you got the habitat's their in? I have honey bee's and my books say that the bees progress through the hive as they mature, The final stage being forager. It's interesting that the bumbles have separate class's.
That makes sense. So why does the movement seem odd - is it just because they are playing it a little faster for editing purposes or is it just because of the depth-of-field effect makes it seem like that when it isn't?
When they were filming the bees with the small field of focus, a tint of pink seemed to sometimes appear. And during those part when the editing went to her then the room was all red. And it seemed to be moving at a slightly accelerated rate... So does that mean that the room was all red but with light being shot at a certain frequency and the camera was set to that frequency to film the bees as if it was light but without making them agitated?
Honey is made by bees using nectar from flowers. Honey bees is the one most commonly referred to, as it is the type of honey consumed by humans. Honey produced by other bees and insects has distinctly different properties. Honey bees transform nectar into honey by a process of regurgitation and evaporation. They store it as a food source in wax honeycombs. Honey gets its sweetness from the Monosaccharides fructose and glucose, and has approximately the same sweetness as that of granulated sugar.
Why are young bees gray? And how do they get their color? I mean is there a good reason for this? And can you please post some pictures of them on wikipedia, I googled but did not find anything about gray bumblebees.
Very cool, I hope we can save the bees. Honey bees were something I remember being not a rare thing at all, a couple summers ago and now I hardly see them.
In 'Origin of Species' Darwin calls them Humblebees. That a lovely name (and lovely passage in the book), so why the name change? Was it really just fashion, as I've read elsewhere? That seems a bit odd to me, and now I'm wondering what other creatures I'm familiar with used to go by different names.
I mean a literal frequency not wavelength-of-light-frequency. As in, the red light is flashing at a certain frequency and the camera takes pictures at the same frequency.
I love these vidoes, they're totally fascinating. On a side note, what accent does she have? It sounds sort of like Welsh to me, but I'm not familiar with all the accents in the UK.
Oh, right, now that you mention it, I remember hearing about ants herding Aphids for their sugar! I guess there's always an exception to anything. But in general it would seem like a big waste of nutrients.
the bees dont get to see red lights, so it´s seemingly dark to them. therefore they dont get the feeling of being "disturbed". usually, when sunlight (or white artifical) light would come into their hive it would be ripped oppen -> danger
Not quite bad to poop sugar: Think of aphids who do this because they get too much from the plant. What they want is more proteins and other things. Ants like the sugar and often "milk" them for sugary poop and often protects them for this reason.
True that honey is not bee poop. Not sure what you mean in the second part, but small leaf insects sometimes poop sugar, aphids for example, I think. I'm curious what happens to the bumble bee poop in nature. Perhaps the bees farm something in it, like mushrooms?
People don't realize how important bees are to flowering plants (our ecosystems)... Hopefully research like this will help undo the damage that we humans inevitably cause
I think Brady likes her. Her videos are the only ones where you don't hear Brady asking questions. I think he edited it out cause he was using a "girlfriend" voice.
Yea, I know. I have a fucked up thing where I get periods of insomnia whenever the seasons change. 2-3 months out of a year I'm in hell, and ASMR videos sometimes help.
The Online Etymology Dictionary says that the name was 'altered by association with Middle English bombeln "to boom, buzz"'. But of course older forms of words also tend to stick around awhile in minority dialects.
It is so interesting that bees can communicate using scents: pheromones. I suppose humans do this too ... like, you really like you boyfriend's sweatshirt. :-) It seems like the communication is useful for acting like a unified group. How else do bees coordinate their actions?
I think you ask a good question... but imagine if every time you tried to have a conversation, everyone else was distracted by your looks. Imagine that one day this girl wants to discuss science, and the rest of the world wants to discuss science AND her looks. The next day, she wants to talk about sports, and the world wants to talk about sports AND her looks. The next day she wants to talk about politics... etc. It would be pretty frustrating trying to share anything with anyone that way.
You can hear the tone in her voice change when she starts talking about how some pesticides affect the learning ability of the bees. It sounds as if she's about to burst into tears. it's adorable
7:42 That bee just fell into the poop corner. So unlucky...
i like how she talks and cares like bees are people

Very interesting these bee videos and i have to say her beauty and accent is absolutely unique.
Keep up the good work, Phyrexious. People need to learn that thinking with their genitals does not lead to "intelligent conversation".
I like her accent. Could listen to her for hours. I actually already did, just by replaying those 3 videos.

Thanks Gabby - fascinating as always!

I really enjoy bumble bees in the garden. They are like the teddy bears of bees :) so beautiful and fuzzy zooming balls :)
I love these bee videos. I really do. They're so interesting.
I'm glad I see this through the computer screen, because that queen would have terrified me if I'd seen her IRL.

One of the previous videos said that they had higher frequency lightning which didn't agitate the bees as much.
There's a thing called ASMR that some people use as a sleeping aid, and several youtube channels having people talking in a calm and/or monotone way with that exact purpose. I guess these bee videos would fit that criteria.
Bees are cool. Thanks for the videos about them Phil.
Very cool. I've never found bees as interesting as during watching these videos.
Somehow, I was never concerned about bumblebees... the myth here says, that they can't even sting (although I now know, that they have a stinger). I used to pet them in the past, when they were all over a flower.

Amazing vid. I've learned so much from this, thanks!

Anyone else, upon watching her lean close over the boxes, spontaneously reminded of Eddie Izzard saying "Covered in Bees!"
That "bee poop" at the end really reminded me of Honey Mustard sauce...
Why are young bees gray? And how do they get their color? I mean is there a good reason for this? And can you please post some pictures of them on wikipedia, I googled but did not find anything about gray bumblebees.
And really well preserved for that matter, they say that honey basically doesn't go bad even after 3000 years.
Very cool, I hope we can save the bees. Honey bees were something I remember being not a rare thing at all, a couple summers ago and now I hardly see them.
7:40 the white larve in the left corner of the center of the screen still moves... why was it abandomned? maybe not developing right?

Do the bumblebees collect and use propolis as honeybees do?

Great info! Think I have a bb hive in the back yard. Are you the Bumble bee lady?
MORE!
Yea, I know. I have a fucked up thing where I get periods of insomnia whenever the seasons change. 2-3 months out of a year I'm in hell, and ASMR videos sometimes help.
I'm pretty sure it's Scottish, probably from north or central parts, where they do sound a wee bit Irish
Has she ever been stung doing her research? (sorry if they've answered this already)
how many times have you been stung?
Can the queen bee fly? It looks a bit too big for its wings
Wonderful!
What's the purpose of the red light?
Lol the queen is bloody massive!
The Online Etymology Dictionary says that the name was 'altered by association with Middle English bombeln "to boom, buzz"'. But of course older forms of words also tend to stick around awhile in minority dialects.
Will you be doing anything about ants?
NOT THE BEES. NOT THE BEES! AHHHHHHH!!!!!
Biology channel, please!!
Correction... She's beeautiful. :3
So you forgot about Aphid and their honeydew.
OH THE BEES, NOT THE BEES, AAAAHHH!!!
Love you
Bee snogging... Haha
Somehow, I read the title as 'The Life of the Boss'.
And Gabby.
Aphids, scales, etc for example (honeydew)?. More examples exist. Kind of depends on what said animal has excess of. =)
I know this question is not related to the topic of the video, but what is that accent?
Can the Queen fly? She looked a bit too big for her wings.
She is lovely
This is what I want to do when I'm older.
I never see any stings on her.. what the hell? Is she like the luckiest person alive?
She is quite knowledgeable, I do hope her University is proud to have her. Also of note is her immense beauty.
covered in bees
Whatever happened to Seamus and his turbines?
Not sure I see anything weird with the movement.
So adorable! (The bees I mean)
Honey is not bee poop, it's preserved food. An animal that pooped sugar would be a pretty bad animal.
It would seem that people don't want to know what they're eating.
"Bee snogging" hahaha That's adorable!
You've got two more guesses.
Video about bees, top 2 comments about the girl...
Cmon guys, get out a little more.
She wants the Bee.
TIL bumble bees and honey bees are not the same thing.
Also "bee snogging" :)
How will a girl know she's beautiful unless you tell her?
Never consider dropping a compliment a waste of time.
first time on the internet?
My guess is her accent is slightly Irish, but I might be mistaken.
Honey is not bee poop; it's bee barf.
Next time: Genetically modifying queens to not produce their fancy pheromone.
Aphids poops sugar, if im not mistaken
It is so interesting that bees can communicate using scents: pheromones. I suppose humans do this too ... like, you really like you boyfriend's sweatshirt. :-) It seems like the communication is useful for acting like a unified group. How else do bees coordinate their actions?
Amor
the real world generikb/beethos.
I bet you've eaten honey -- guess what it is.
I think Gabby needs to reapply her nail polish :)
I think you ask a good question... but imagine if every time you tried to have a conversation, everyone else was distracted by your looks. Can you clone a bee ?
Aye, she is rather bonny.
Hi, how do you manage genetic diversity
She's precious!
Buff tailed bees?
Precisely! Bees' vomit on toast for breakfast!
