The most exquisite performance I've ever heard of this aria. And it helps that Ormandy doesn't drag it out to 6 or more minutes like so many second rate conductors.
Je suis heureux d'avoir retrouvé cette merveille de voix qui atteint les sommets de l'art du chant dans cet air redoutable. Après Ninon Vallin qui reste la référence vocale pour traduire l'émotion sublime de Louise amoureuse.
For years this recording was the benchmark for this aria. Time and many recordings have altered this criterion. It is a shame that Maynor was not able to make more records but what is available is to be treasured.
A critic at the time of its release wrote that this record was nice, but he dismissed it because he questioned how Maynor, as a black woman, could possibly identify with a young French seamstress.
Surely, music is the best thing, we humans, have ever done. This aria and rendition is among those at the top. .
I've heard this sung by all the greats. By far this is my all time favorite rendition. BRAVA!!!
