The problem with most studies is it doesn't show how side effects could be caused by other markers or environmental effects. I've been taking finasteride for 10 years, and about a year back I started feeling really depressed. My doc said he thinks I should stop the medication, and I asked before that, could I have a full panel of bloodwork done just to see if something else is causing it. Turns out I had extremely low levels of vitamin D. I started supplementing and getting outside more and now I feel great. Correlation does not always equal causation.
This is what happened to me. I was taking 1mg per day as that is what I was told to take. First 3 months I didn’t notice a single side effect. I thought this is great. I’ll get a hair transplant carry on taking this. Anyway, month 4 I had a complete breakdown. Now just to be clear on this, I have never been depressed in my life. Never suffered from anxiety either. Month 4 on 1mg per day. I started noticing I would get disturbed sleep every night. Thought nothing of it. Within the space of 2 weeks I completely broke down. Felt depressed as hell. Had to take myself out of work and just starting to feel a bit better now a week off the tablet. There is no question it is the tablet because I was on nothing else and I’m absolutely gutted that it is the tablet as I don’t want anymore hair falling out. After finding this video tho I will take your advice. I will leave it for a month then try lower dosage and hopefully without side effects. Thanks Edit: just an update to this and I feel very embarrassed saying this but I did in fact get a hair transplant and went back to 1mg per day and I have had absolutely no side effects at all. I don’t know why I initially had them but I’ve been on finesterade for probably 18 months now and I’ve had zero effects. Yeah so there you go, sorry if I put people off and I questioned whether I should put this but you have to be honest. Cheers
Idk how i landed on this video, but is hair really worth it in middle age men.. i mean some side effects are suicidal thoughts, increased anxiety and depression? males have a high suicide count.. Not to mention the potential brain fog.. that is enough for me to just go bald and embrace it if that day ever comes.
balding also increasing anxiety and depression especially in middle age men. Esp in the social media era. So we need to be 100% sure if its nocebo or actual side.
It sounds like most people don't need as much as often the label recommends. I blame the pharma companies. People may be unknowingly blasting themselves with way too much. Too much of anything can be hazardous.

I developed erectile dysfunction after taking about a week and a few days. After that it got progressively worse per day. I had to stop by the time I got to two weeks and a half. It destroyed my sex function and my penis would not get erect at all. I got so scared! I’m still scared if I’ll stay like this for life. It’s already been around 8 months and I’m not better. I feel worse at times with severe depression and constant brain fog and memory loss. But what’s worse is that I can’t get an erection like I normally would. It’s not mental either. I was happy and waiting to get results and have beautiful hair. And I had a lot going on for me. This destroyed me. I have friends that it did the same. So what’s the treatment to fix this??? Haven’t found it and endocrinologist just say it’s in my head. How I would it be in my head when I NEVER think that I have brain fog, muscle mass loss, erectile dysfunction, and some puffy nipples. 5AR is important for brain health (mood, sleep, motivation etc). Finasteride lowers 5AR by minimum 70% on 1mg per day. Over time it causes problems. PFS could only occur if there’s been a permanent negative change somewhere in this system either 5AR is no longer produced or other mechanisms have in effect permanently “deregulated” from lack of action.

Took Finasteride for a couple of weeks. 0.5mg to try to reduce side effects. It stopped the hair loss, but it made me extremely depressed and impotent. Wasn't worth it for me. Gonna have to figure out another treatment. I find your skepticism of the side effects at the beginning of the video a bit odd, considering your reasoning for the skepticism is because people were treated with 5mg years ago and were fine. Does finasteride cause sleep disorders? I have taken it only for 9 days, with a slight weakening of erections and a significant decrease in libido. However, the strangest symptom is waking up too early. It is not a matter of anxiety: when I am nervous, I usually have a hard time falling asleep. During these days, instead, I have fallen asleep very quickly, but I have always woken up early and become unable to fall asleep afterwards. This has never occured to me in my life, regardless of the level of stress. I discontinued the drug 3 days ago, with an improvement of the sexual symptoms (which had never been severe anyway), but the sleep disorders persist.

I just took my first dose last night - hair isn't too bad yet, but was curious to see how I responded. Last night, soon after the first dose I felt intense light-headedness and some brain fog coupled with an intense difficulty to get to sleep. I eventually did manage - woke up feeling slightly better. I have noticed that my erections have also somewhat weakened alongside my libido. This is super noticeable for me - as my libido is usually really high and it's easy for me to get an erection. I also noticed today that my seaman is super watery. Do you reckon I should continue with the drug?
@@chrisdoesmusic it will manifest very soon. You won't sleep well and your libido will go downhill. Issues with memory and lightheaded will stay for the whole duration of intake.
I have a feeling the numbers are wrong when it comes to side effects from Finasteride. They say only 2-3% of people get sides from Fin, that BS. How is it that myself, and a good friend of mine both suffered similar side effects when taking Fin? My sides came a bit later, and his sides earlier. That to me doesn't sound very rare.
@@tired_of_everything0 Hey, sorry for late response. I'm in my mid thirties. Fin works really well, and I'm still taking it. However, these common sides that are said to be 2-3% must not be right.
Started on Finestride, then dutasteride. Had progressively worsening effects...however not very long later I had discovered I had low T from a few other, completely unrelated medical problems and am now on TRT for life. I think dutasteride seven days a week is complete overkill as my DHT is permanently crushed to almost zero, but even with no DHT my side effects are much less on TRT than before. To a large extent, if you have sufficient overall T levels you can survive with severely depressed DHT levels for a long time. People with ‘post finestride syndrome’ are most likely with an advancing low testosterone problem that don’t have enough T any longer to cover for the missing DHT... Also, DHT levels when you have low T seem to pegged more as a ratio of estrogen than testosterone...people who ate higher than average estrogen converters, with low T and a high ratio of DHT to T seem to people vulnerable to baldness anyway... If you are thinking about starting on a DHT blocker, get a full hormone panel done first!
You need a full testosterone panel, including DHT and estrogen. If you get a liver function test done as well, then an endo can calculate your free androgen index based on SHBG and albumin levels. My free androgen index was absolutely appalling. Even worse than my free T...it was basically 50% of the minimum level at which you can be treated in the U.K. There are some people who take estrogen as a hairloss measure as it apparently reduces 5AR activity somehow and thus lowers DHT. Since going on TRT I’ve cut my Dutasteride usage from every day to twice weekly and added in topical fin 0.25 and increased minoxidil from 5% topical to 15%... So far hair seems to have got thicker, not thinner...

It is irrelevant to compare the rate of erectile dysfunction between people having taken finasteride and the general population. Because PFS is not only erectile dysfunction, it is a full set of troubles going from sexual to cognitive and physical, consequences of the hormonal unbalance induced by finasteride. I understand there is here an advice consisting in practicing stop and go (1 month / 5 month). It's a dangerous advice. Once the unbalance is there, most of the time it's too late. The body can't recover and there is currently no treatment.
How is it dangerous advice? Why should anyone keep taking finasteride if they know that the drug is causing problems for them? Also, how long is too long when it comes to taking finasteride?
@@brokenbutterfly3178 He is right. And to answer your question, people keep using it because they want to desperately keep their hair, so it's a tradeoff. How long is too long: there is no rule, everyone is different. Some can't even recover from a single pill.

You should really update this video as it now comes across like you are not just downplaying the potential adverse effects but are deliberately mischaracterising them along with their history of reporting. Saying they essentially appeared from nowhere 10 years ago in a ‘strange round-about way’ is simply not true. There have been many animal studies, going back to, at least, the early 2000’s showing permanent genital alterations. Court documents were released in 2019 showing the safety profile from the manufacturer to be extremely misleading when it came to logging adverse events. It has since been confirmed the persistent adverse symptoms are likely due to gene deregulation (epigenetics), therefore claims of a nocebo effect are really just a tactic to discredit and downplay reports of legitimate harm.
But that doesn’t change the fact that all the studies on pfs so far are poor quality I personally do believe in pfs but I actually believe it’s even rarer than portrayed online i think a lot of the cases are either psychosomatic or down to other health issues
@@RH-eb6tm Without wanting this to appear like a personal attack, you say you ‘believe in PFS’ yet follow up with the previously mentioned dismissive claims. Denial of PFS/persistent symptoms typically unfolds as follows: First it’s claimed it’s all make-believe or ‘psychosomatic’. When informed about evidence of biological abnormalities it’s said sufferers must have another underlying illness or have abnormal results due to ‘lifestyle factors’. So now it’s not imaginary? Interesting. This is elaborated with further claims that biopsy results may indeed be indicative of disease, just unrelated to Fin use. At this point some vehement naysayers may claim of these men - and these are young men - must have, coincidentally, had these problems prior to using Fin but somehow they, collectively, only became aware them during or after Fin use, leading them to falsely believe Fin is responsible. Or, they were aware of them prior to Fin use but want a legal payout or something to blame their pre-existing symptoms on because they are dishonest. When it’s pointed out the biological abnormalities match those abnormalities found in previously healthy animals given 5ARI, responses are either thin on the ground, or it’s claimed that drug trials and FDA safety reports speak for themselves. Typically, there is no direct response to the fact Merck’s redacted court papers prove they lied about the drug’s safety record because there is no way to justify that course of action. It’s all just a big coincidence, right? If you’ve read the few focused PFS studies (those specifically investigating PFS patients and experimental PFS animal models) then have you reviewed the associated research references? How are you personally defining PFS? It’s simply lasting and varying symptoms after 5ARI use, and not necessarily limited to ‘sexual dysfunction’ or ‘depression’ that was later added to the warning leaflet. Not all evidence of harm is listed or searchable under ‘PFS’ and direct research on PFS men is still relatively new. So if you haven’t done so already, consider widening your investigations to include general and specific studies on 5ARI human and animal subjects with a focus on adverse outcomes, also androgen and androgen receptor-related diseases. Look at a wide range of neurosteroid and neuropsychiatric papers. Consider reviewing other post-drug syndrome research, you’ll note epigenetics is a common theme, so review genetic/epigenetic literature too. Don’t look in one place for answers.
@@etonmess6247 your making it sound like I said it doesn’t exist which I didn’t the main point I’m trying to make is that the constant fear mongering online isn’t helping anyone and there is a lot of people that have convinced themselves that they have it when in reality they don’t people underestimate the power of the brain when it comes to these things and I think people should consider the fact that it could be ‘in their heads’ if you like because a lot of people seem to overthink possibly down to other mental health issues such as ocd for example it’s very easy for a person with ocd to convince themselves that they have the condition don’t get me wrong there are promising studies but there still isn’t solid proof there may well be proof in a few years time but at this moment the evidence is nowhere near strong enough
@@RH-eb6tm I think it’s safe to say that no one can fully determine who is or isn’t experiencing their symptoms due to the drug, other physical factors, or perhaps purely psychological factors by simply reading a person’s limited online posts. Although, I disagree that there isn’t already solid proof that 5ARI are potentially harmful to some users. I think what you might mean is the current evidence (those focused PFS studies) isn’t quite strong enough to conclude a direct causation with Fin in some men who report persistent symptoms. There is, however, strong evidence that these men have enduring abnormalities and there is strong evidence that 5ARI have caused similar enduring tissue changes in rodents.
@@etonmess6247 Yh I would agree with that what I don’t really take issue with people giving warnings about the drug because some people will have a genuine bad reaction to it very rare but it does happen unfortunately but I what I do take issue with is people trying to scare people who are already taking the drug by saying that they will eventually get it and tbh I reckon quite a few people will have gotten scared and given themselves a nocebo effect from that it’s really hard to determine whether the issues these people are having are down to fin or other health issues but a lot of the pfs people will not consider other possibilities and this is what is keeping them unwell as they are thoroughly convinced that fin has cause they’re problems and no one can tell them otherwise they usually respond in an aggressive manner which makes it hard for people to help them

This would need to be done for a number of months. The HCG will stimulate neurosteroid synthesis in the brain (verified in multiple TBI studies), Progesterone will further make more Allopregnanolone, and HDAC inhibitors help reverse some of the methylation (verified in cancer research) that occurred on both the enzymes and the receptors. If you're someone who got really screwed up by 5ARIS, you may need to run additional "cycles" of DHT based compounds to downregulate and restore signaling to the Androgen Receptors after you reboot the neurosteroids using the above.

Is your doctor a dermatologist, by any chance? Hair loss doctors have every reason to dismiss the side effects that people experience. So why would people bother to tell them about the side effects if they'll just be told it's all in their heads? The people with side effects eventually seek out other doctors. Talk to a urologist or a psychiatrist, and you'll probably get a different story.
People should take note of who is delivering this information (people who profit from you taking Finasteride). Main point: do your research and don't make a decision based of this video alone. Also, at 7:45 timestamp - well obviously........ you're saying there are more people who experience ED etc. without finasteride vs. people who experience ED etc. with finasteride. That's because the sample size of people not on finasteride is immensely larger. What a silly statement to make. And the final statement you make "this is a very specific group of people who experience this problem" makes it sound like you know who those people are. If there was a way to know, this wouldn't even be a discussion. It terms of susceptibility to side-effects, it's not a specific group, it's an unknown group. Small yes, but unknown.

There are a lot of possibilities, according to depressions and other mental problems. We often forget, that 5ar2 is not only there to convert T to DHT, it is also there to metabolise Progesterone. Given Finasteride halts or reverses the balding process through the inhibition of 5a reductase (isoenzymes 2 & 3) which is responsible for masculinisation during puberty and reproductive/muscular/cognitive efficiency in adulthood, is it fair to say that it is a mild form of chemical castration? It seems to me that the potential risks of side effects of lasting feminisation far outweigh the benefit of keeping your hair.
How did you jump from one point, too linking finasteride to a mild form of chemical castration? The drug blocks the breakdown of the hormone by blocking the enzyme, the hormone doesn’t disappear, it’ll just be broken down through other means in the body? Chemical castration is a method of removing a mans ability to impregnate a woman, the comparison is surely you would agree, a very harsh one? A man losing his hair could be something as easy as accepting it and shaving it all of one night, or for some men a complete disaster, which rightfully or wrongly completely controls their life
@@traceurGeorge I think 'castration' in this case is loosely used. It's besides the point. It's about the potential side-effects of finasteride. You're right though, it's a bigger deal for some than others.

And they probably need to take that medication for the rest of their lives, or at least until prostate surgery which causes ED as well, so how would you ever know if a 50 year old taking 5mg would suffer from PFS? Curious even aside from PFS, do 50 year old men taking 5mg for prostate mention ED much?

They suck in gullible people into their forums to make money off ad revenue of lawyers looking for lawsuits of gullible victims with imaginary conditions like post finasteride syndrome that are all in their head, and from snake oil hair loss companies who put ads on their and sell products that don’t work. There is an entire online industry centered about these snake oils salesmen. They flood finasteride TH-cam videos to crate the imagine that many people have the imaginary post finasteride syndrome to sway them from using the drug and signing up for membership their forums and buying their useless products (which also often have side effects). Mathematically, it’s impossible for that many people to have such side effects because 1) the well researched studies with good sample sizes and years of follow ups don’t show it and 2) the patients of hair loss doctors experiencing side effects are not higher than in the studies. If the studies were wrong, the patients would be experiencing it and finasteride would not be used by millions of people around the world, making it one of the most popular drugs. If something as severe as ED was or deep depression was experienced in a large percentage of people taking the drug, it would NOT be used consistently by millions of people around the world for years and decades. Many people will put up with minor side effects, but they would NOT put up with severe side effects like ED or imaginary post finasteride syndrome or very deep depression. Most people would drop the drug if they were the case. But it’s not the case. I am suspicious when I see comments like tours. It makes me think you are likely a troll from a hair loss forum like the many TH-cam troll accounts used to push that industry. Those people are the real snake oil salesmen, not the hair loss doctors. The hair loss doctors actually improve people’s lives with scientifically backed therapies that WORK and have very few to no side effects for most people. Finasteride doesn’t block all the DHT in your body so you still have enough for the neural steroids as well. So most people won’t experience significant depression. Only a very small percentage of people who are already predisposed to depression will.
Stephen Hyland hi, thank you for your comments, I appreciate where you’re coming from. And I think your right, that is why I’m scared to take it as I am predisposed to depression and have a very pessimistic attitude and can’t help thinking that I will be the one who gets worse depression if I take finisteride! And yes the negative spin vested interest has spouted has worked on me and spoiled my chances of keeping my hair. I still can’t decide, my wife is all for it though... I actually bought it online and then cancelled my order and bought minoxidil, which buy the way I’m having imaginary side effects. Thanks again
@@kristoffernaslund9455 I took 0.5 mg of finasteride in total and have very serious side effects. I am on day 3 all i can hope is that it goes away and i recover. I read online it stays permanent for some people. Look up the site called propeciahelp and read the forums on how bad peoples life become mentally and sexually. I wish i didnt take it because i realize now that having a healthy functioning body is way more important than having hair. People who had no permanent serious side effects with it do recommend it bcs its good for stopping hair loss.
What i dont understand is how some people don't recover from sexual side effects caused by propecia. In some countries, chemical castration is used on rapers, and even that isnt permanent (6 to 12 months recovery time)
@Hooaah It is well known that it can cause permanent erectile dysfuntion. Many people do avoid the drug because they are scared but many try it out because they are very insecure so they take anything to stop baldness even if its risky or they think its extremely safe so they take it. And many people who use it report no side effects but some people have serious side effects who are permanent. Its not just erectile dysfunction there are many different side effects. Sexual and mental. I dont have erectile dysfunction but i got other sides. The worst one is not feeling my penis well.
Guys I took this pill on Wednesday after hearing these guys speak and then again on Friday its now Saturday night and I cannot sleep whatsoever. My body has a very weird feeling and I have ED and I hope and pray to God that my symptoms will go away as suggested by these two doctors
@@TruthsSake I have read some stories of people in and around the same age as me (late 20s) and it can happen with a few pills. What happened to me I now know was an anxiety attack which over the past week I now know how to better handle but also now these past two days I also have insomnia whereby I haven't slept for the past two days and sleep was never an issue with myself. Like I said I'm very much hoping that like Dr Knudsen has said the side effects do subside and eventually leave I have had instances where I feel I am getting better mainly with the ED where my erections are gradually getting stronger and lasting longer and have been told there's been instances of users taking similar amounts of the drug to myself recovering from anywhere between a week to 3 months...
Calm down you don’t have ED 🙄 if someone told you that a pill had potential to give you limp dick, that’s all you’d think about. Erections are 90% mental.
if you are worried, take a shot of testosterone, that will reset your hormones, if you still have issues look at my recovery program at www.5arinhibitorhelp.com/
I've been on 1mg finasteride for about 10 years. I'm 34 years old. My hairline had receded a little bit and I wanted to ensure that I had a full head of hair going forward for cosmetic reasons. The men in my family don't get particularly bald, I'd say they have about the average hair-loss that you see in males. I'm just super into longevity in general. I had a testosterone blood test done last year and it came out as being out-of-range on the high side. 35.8 nmol/L (current reference range is 10.0-32.0). Converted to ng/dL that's 1031.7. So in terms of total testosterone I'm sitting pretty, especially for a 34 year old. Anyways, my erections have been weaker the last few years and thus I have been using viagra to make sex better (which works very well). I can still perform without it to a degree, but it's definitely not perfect and I have to make sure I get constant stimulation. As far as my libido goes, it's okay but every so often I go through spells of it being low. I should note that I'm pretty sexually active and have had many partners over the years which I believe has made me psychologically desiring sex less than someone who never gets any, lol. I came across some of these videos and I decided to stop taking finasteride to see if I'll feel any different. It's been literally 3 days and this morning I woke up with an erection. I haven't had morning wood in quite some time! It could just be a coincidence. I'll report back here over the weeks and months and see how I go.
A week in and I had another solid erection this morning. I swear I haven't had these in quite a long time. I'm going to stay off the finasteride for 1-3 months and continue to see what happens. The real test will be when I go back onto finasteride and if these side effects return or not as I'll definitely be restarting so as to keep my hair.
Really appreciate the long winded comment. I’ve been on the topical finasteride for the last three weeks and I’m normally very mentally healthy, but I’ve been fatigued, low energy, and borderline depressed the last two weeks. I am going to stop taking it for the next week or so to experiment as well. Keep us posted on your experience.
Took finasteride 1 mg per day for about 9 months, the morning erection disappeared for 4-5 months. Before taking finasteride, DHT was 740-800, аfter taking finasteride, about 300.
@@VictoRs107 Hello Denis, I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say. You're saying your morning erections disappeared for the last 4-5 months of the total 9 months you were on finasteride?
I only was on Finasteride for 2 months, and here I am over a year later, and I still feel like it partially affected my memory. I used to be great at remembering things, and now I struggle remembering things I just looked at.
@Justin Susini I switched to Rogaine foam and Lipogaine (both of which I highly recommend) but I think a little bit of my sex drive is gone now. However, I'm grateful I got off the drug when I did. I can't believe how insane the side effects of that drug were. It was like living in a dream 24/7
I feel you bro. You're not alone. Thanks for speaking up, more of us need to speak up. Imagine your family, kids, friends will still be taking this drug years from now if men remain too embarassed to speak up.
@@macetini Give it 3 months. I'm a fellow victim and over the past few years I've had to become quite knowledgeable on the topic. My best piece of advice for anyone with mental side effects: you'll only know your situation after 3 months, and meanwhile you need to give your brain a chance to recover and not make things worse. So for 3 months, do not allow yourself to read or even think about this, distract yourself e.g. nature, going into work rather than homeoffice. Learn to meditate. Pick up physical exercise. It's important to give your brain a chance to recover by not thinking about this. It will affect your future trajectory. Trust me on this. After 3 months (April 15), assess. But not beforehand. Until then, resolve that even if things don't improve, you're going to live a kickass life. If I can do it, so can you.
@@Concojone5 Tnx man, it gives me hope. I feel like I'm losing my mind. I can't believe that just 3 pills can do something like this. It has been 5 weeks and I still can't sleep more than a few hours per night.
These guys cannot be impartial. It is in their interest to make these young men look crazy. Taking this drug just cannot be a good idea at least until proper studies are done
I got persistent side effects (ED, low libido, etc) months after discontinuing finasteride as normal, healthy 23 y/o male with no preexisting medical conditions. Side effects from fin are definitely real, and for an unfortunate few permanent.
I have just fallen into this second group. I did not notice symptoms right away but I may not have been conscious of them. About 8-9 months after staring I developed the most severe sexual side affects. I was taking 4-5 a week. I have not cut to 1to 1.5 a week and still experiencing. Going to get completely off now for the next couple months
People who haven't experienced PFS themselves will be mostly in denial (telling it's only in people's heads, nocebo etc.) until it's too late unfortunately. This cycle will continue for years to come.
@@sinanengin5756 I do, my sex drive is gone. It's only physical stimulation which keeps me working, mental one is not possible anymore. Some connection in my brain has shut down. Thinking about sex has no physical reaction. There is no reason to assume I had any preconditions or environmental effects because my shut down took place overnight and I was always in good shape before taking 0,5mg for 7 months. People just tend to look for excuses so they can take the drug and tell themselves it cannot happen and everyone who tells otherwise is delusional. But once it happens there is no return to normal and you will regret that day when you decided to take it for the rest of your life and damn yourself for calling it fearmongering. You wish yourself badly back to the point when the decision was still to be made. If it is on you yet, don't take it. Not even a small dosage. Don't look for excuses and talk yourself into the "I'll be fine" mindset - you don't know. Balding is not that bad. It's not even a point of thought for me anymore after realizing what I've lost.

do you want to clarify more interaction between DHT and beard growth or DHT blocker and beard growth? does finasteride affect your beard growth? Thankyou!
Yes it does, i have been taking Fin for 4 months no side effects but my beard growth seems to be stopped since then (my velus hair in small spots won't become thicker) so i used Minoxidil and my velus hairs are almost turning into terminal hair. The million dolar question.. is this reversible? Or at least some treatment? I read that some patiens recieve arimidex + tamoxifen or clomid, my doctor only agreed to give me tamoxifen but it didnt do too much, ibwant to try with anastrozol too
If you still have it after 3-6 months, it's not reversible, unfortunately. PFS is a lifelong condition with no known cure. At Propeciahelp, you'll find a few thousand victims experimenting with (often dangerous) solutions but it seems almost nobody fixed their problem, many made their condition much worse. However, there are ways to relieve symptoms in (some) patients including hormone replacement therapy and viagra. I hope you get better or find a way to cope with it. Report your case.

@@Concojone5 If you actually would use some numbers and some studies you wouldn't seem some desperate. As we all know for a drug to be FDA approved it needs to have a safety test done, a long term study. Officially, finasteride is causing side effects in 2-4% of the people who take it and those go away after are being discontinued(I'm pretty sure I don't have to put link for this... those, or even lower numbers are pretty much in every fin study), which is very safe to me. The question is whether lowering a very potent sexual hormone by 2/3 does not have a significant impact on the organism in every case. If you on the other hand asked people whether they would sacrifice hair for increasing a libido-enhancing hormone by factor 3, I assume the majority would answer with yes.
Im pretty sure they wouldn't sacrifice hair for that hormone. Why ? Hair is like a huge factor in appearance, which is the first thing that the females notice. If you make no impressions leading to dating and or sexual experiences you won't need the libido increasing hormone!

@@Namanop77 My best advice, that was also given to me by people who know, is to stop reading or thinking about finasteride for the next 3 months (May 1). After that, you can do whatever you like. But right now, your job is to break the downward spiral because it can determine what your final mental condition will be. No browsing or even thinking related to this topic, just look up how to control anxiety, spend your time in nature or in some other "good" place, learn to meditate (!). If you want to do more, pick up physical exercise. From what I read you are improving extremely well compared to the typical victim, and you have virtually no finasteride in your system, so don't fuck it up now.
@@Namanop77 It's scary to go through this, I know, but it's normal. Expect slow progress. Accept it may not fully resolve, give it 3 months using the techniques I mentioned above, and you'll know. Only then assess and see if you need to seek mental help (people have success doing that). Meanwhile, if at any point, you have suicidal thoughts, seek professional help. Let's talk again in 3 months. Stop the panic spiral and trust the process. Pause the minoxidil for now. If others can do this, so can you. You're a hero.

Typically there is partial or complete recovery, often slow, without medical help, and if you're not happy where you are in 3 months, medical help usually improves things (mental symptoms) from there. Hello doctors, I have a finasteride question that has not been addressed: what happens when the 5mg is cut in advance? Does the medication deteriorate over time if cut into quarters? My pharmacist gave me the 5mg pills but actually pre-cut 100 pills into quarters. Is that okay? I heard that this may risk the medication losing its potency if pre-cut so far in advance. If someone could please respond, I would greatly appreciate this as I am losing my hair quite fast.
I don't fully know the answer to that. If I prescribe the 5mg tab to patients, I get them to cut it up themselves, 1 tab per week. I couldn't tell you what the effect of pre-cutting them would be. Also, with that amount, you would have over a year supply which I suspect would be beyond the expiry date. But cutting the tablets is fine in principle.
Hi mate, my doc prescribed 5mg to cut into quarters for prostate not hair and said it will be fine, I just cut one pill and use it till I need to cut another.
Just found this channel as I'm considering FUE and have started doing some research. Looking through the video list, this one grabbed my attention. I've been on Fin for I'd say about 15years. Prior to this I tried saw palmetto, but had undesired side effects, then tried topical minoxidil but after a while i started getting rashes. So I was recommended finasteride. 1mg a day. Hasn't reversed hair loss, just held onto what I have. No one ever told me that it builds up in your system, or that a lower dose would be ok. No ED, but as a 50+ yr old, I put an increasing reduction in libido down to reduction in testosterone. I'm very interested to learn more about PFS after seeing the video. I'm probably one of the lucky ones if I didn't get any clear side effects within months of starting.
It's hard to recognize the side effects. If you'd like to learn more about PFS, see the website of the postfinasteride foundation, and the propeciahelp forums. Don't be put off by the panicky posts, just look for the facts.
I really hope this is all just bullshit; I'm absolutely terrified. Nothing in my life has changed for the worse, the only difference was taking dutasteride. After a while, my libido, drive and function down below disappeared, and I've gotten really bad depression, anxiety, lethargy, fatigue, insomnia, muscle weakness and the likes. I've had full panels of blood work done, and everything always comes back great, and my doctor and I haven't been able to find anything else that may be causing these issues. I used to be really happy, and have constant and great energy all day and would sleep great; but now, I'm honestly an often fatigued and emotionless shell. I discontinued dutasteride, and only time will tell if these symptoms persist after it's cleared out of my system. I supposed I'll give it 6 months before I call anything.
I used finasteride (Proscar) for 20 years with excellent results (today I'm 43 y.o., still NW2) but a month ago it stopped working and I was shedding like crazy. I'm now taking Avodart daily, shedding stopped and hair is looking much thicker and healthier.
Flavio Sousa There isn’t any significant difference in the two in terms of effectiveness. The new drug you are on just suppressed a bit more DHT and also T. You probably were more sensitive to the androgens than most men are and that’s why. One can also add RU onto their hair while taking finasteride if they don’t want to nuke their T levels with a drug like Avodart.

Is it possible that post-finasteride syndrome is confused with the long time the drug remains on the skin? It is said that a simple dose of 1mg can remain on the skin for at least 30 days, so daily intake would lead to an over-accumulation in the body. In addition, it takes 3-6 months for the body to rid itself of the drug.
It takes 30 days for the body to rid of the drug in its cells. That’s why 3x a week is more than enough for basically anyone who decides to take finasteride. “Remain on the skin” finasteride doesn’t remain on the skin it remains in our blood for about 30 days or just a bit more. Which is also why you can and should take a month or two off every 5-6 months fin to cleanse your body of the drug so it doesn’t build up over a long period of time which is a large reason why (SOME) people who take fin for so many years have long affects because the minority of people who do get affects didn’t take a break, these doctors explained it pretty well how you could take 1-2 months off fin and not lose any ground that you made from recovering or regrowing hair. I’m about to order finasteride and I’m starting off with the standard dose of 1mg fin 3x a week. I’m not going to take it every day seeing as 3 mg is more than enough or perhaps even too much. And if that’s the case I’ll just lower the dose to 0.5 mg 3 times a week.
side effects are very real...id have a guess and say 1 in every 1000 men who take it and stop will have prolonged side effects........I used finasteride for 8 years and had no side effects then after 8 years hormonal system crashed........fast forward 7 years now still residual side effects....DHT is so important, more so for the down regulating neuro-steroids of its effect from the 5AR pathway.
onedaywalkalone How? That is DHT level on the hair follicle. It doesn’t get into blood? Such comments make me worried but also I try to make some sense on them!
Are you sure these side effects you have experienced wouldn't have occurred regardless of you being on the drug or not? Erectile dysfunction is not uncommon
So basicaly there is no underlying variable that we yet know of, with witch we can predict that a person will develop PFS caused by finasteride usage (because of potential existence of that variable in a given person). And the statistics are showing that the incidence of PFS like symptoms in the "normal" lets say "age equated" group of people is higher than in the population of finasteride users. Witch goes on to say that there is absolutely no statisticaly sound evidence that anyone will ever develop PFS symptoms *because of finasteride usage... But since we use our intellect we can also use it and say that there *might be something that we dont yet know of that could be predictive of developing PFS so its good to acknowledge that and label PFS as having side effect symptoms 6 months after usage, so we could then see what happens there. But the numbers are now showing that its highly unlikely that PFS happens because of finasteride. And also your experience of never having any clients with the "PFS" is encouraging. Anyways, its just my interpretation of the information you are sharing. Thank you for doing this, it is very informative, makes me able to make good decisions about my incipient androgenetic alopecia.
josip vran Exactly. That’s what I tell people who push the post finastaride syndrome theory. I say that if the studies done on the drug were incorrect, we would see a higher sample size of patients who have these side effects with doctors. But no matter where you go, if you ask hair doctors what percentage of their patients get side effects while on the drug, they’ll say it’s in line with the sample size of subjects who had possible side effects in the studies, and in many cases, much less. And the drug doesn’t block all DHT, only 60-70%. So there is still enough DHT for the few important functions. There are populations that, for genetic reasons, don’t make high amounts of DHT and they’re just fine and healthy as well. So it really does seem like it’s mainly a sexual maturation hormone and is used in small amounts for a few other things and once we are adults, we only need small amounts of it. Testosterone seems to be the most important.
I rather go bald than messing with hormonal activity that takes place in the body because to be honest nobody really understand all this add up and what prolong effects are there. I’m more worried of what’s in the head rather than what’s on it.
Finasteride Decrease his overall prostate cancer BUT should one get prostate cancer while on finasteride, these cancers tend to be more aggressive and higher grade.
I took 2 dosages of 1.25 mcg of Propecia and experienced ED just the following day. Its been 4 days I am off med and I'm not fully recovered. but day 4 is better than day 2 and 3. Hopefully, I will be back to normal. I realized I am very sensitive to the med and decided to keep my penis functioning rather than keeping my hair.
Feels like there is a 10% improvement but I am not sure. I have been super stressed about something else so I am not sexually active currently to measure my libido. Same with ED.
Don't lower the dose, that's what I did and I regret it. It makes the damage more gradual and therefore harder to notice. Clear side effects are a blessing because they give you a chance to quit before the damage gets worse and more irrepairable.
After stopping the medication, how long does it take for me to feel completely normal again. Currently experiencing some dizziness, anxiety, depression, and just generally not feeling like myself. I've only taken it for 3.5 weeks going down in dosage each week bc of the side effects and it's been 5 full days since stopping. Many thanks.
@@hiraeth195 I got covid shortly after and still recovering from that. So there's just a lot of overlap between what could be from fin or covid. I felt arguably even worse for like 1.5 weeks after getting the positive test result. But currently I am feeling relatively better. But still not 100%. Most of my symptoms are the same to a much lesser degree. The anxiety and depression is prob only from the fact that I'm losing my fair at only 23 yo, and not due to some brain change by fin. I still feel dizzy / imbalanced here and there, but nothing too crazy. I notice I'm worse in the morning right after waking up. Planning on seeing some docs once im negative for covid to sort things out.
@@MIKEYW978 it's been 5 months since I first noticed the side effect back in December 2021. I stopped taking the medication around 3 weeks in which is actually right around the time I got covid. My brain fog during that time felt like it changed? Hard to describe. It's entirely possible that my fog from fin changed to fog from covid. So from Jan to I'd say end of March I'd been having that sensation. It wasnt until April that I felt it subside. Currently I think most of it has gone away.
Is it possible that there weren't complaints previously with men treating their prostates simply because men in that age range "expect" to not feel like balls of fire sexually, physically, or even in terms of mental acuity? Maybe if they were affected, it was just chalked up to just "life." Whereas when a younger man's life is diminished in those areas, the difference is much more stark and noticeable.
You hit the nail on the head. And I don't understand why hair surgeons keep denying postfinasteride syndrome, when all other doctors are starting to acknowledge it and when even the official labeling/packaging is now warning about it. We go to them for advice because they are supposed to know, and we end up with this terrible condition while they just keep saying how great finasteride is without even questioning themselves. “It's difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on not understanding it."
There have been complaints going way back to the beginning. These two just decided not to do a simple Google search prior to putting out this video full of misinformation. Some "doctors" huh?

Took Finasteride for 8 months, developed severe insomnia while taking it - tried to taper off slowly and felt better initially. But then once I fully stopped about a week later I had the dreaded crash and since then my life has changed dramatically for the worse. I have severe insomnia and cognitive side effects - can't work anymore because of it and basically lost all desire and fun in any social interaction due to my constant exhaustion. I don't say everyone who takes Finasteride develops PFS - most people don't but for the one's who do it has life altering consequences. That is why more research needs to be conducted to establish who can take Finasteride safely and how PFS patients can be treated. That is just what everyone needs to acknowledge - there few dramatically few studies out there and more COI-free research has to be conducted. For example, what the hair loss surgeons in this video claim is the reason that same people have lasting side effects (about Finasteride building up in the body) has just no scientific backup - it is an explanation they have created out of thin air. So please be aware of all that before you start take Finasteride. (Btw, it seems like most people are focusing on sexual sides - yes they exist but for example I don't suffer from them. Nevertheless PFS has destroyed my life for the last six months and I didn't notice that my restlessness and insomnia stem from Finasteride and not from stress at work until it was too late)
This is exactly my story. I am sorry for you as I am sorry for myself. This never ending total insomnia is the worst torture possible. And it doesn't go away. I checked my morning cortisole level once, it was way too high. Without the help of an opiate (Tramadol),which sedates me and allows me to sleep at night, I would have gone mad. But the price for sleep is addiction but I know how to taper it slowly down to Zero. I have no choice. But I don't recommend it to anyone taking Tramadol for sleep, although it's very reliable in terms of maintaining sleep. But the next morning you will always feel like death. I took everything in order to get sleep. I don't recommend the following meds for PFS insomnia either. Mirtazapine Trazodone Zopiclone Benzodiazepines Seroquel Tavor Zolpidem Doxepine Melatonine All these meds lose their effect after a few days and I feel very bad under them. PFS insomnia came to stay, so you need to battle the root cause (allopregnalone missing, obviously). Go to an endocrinologist asap. Good luck.
Thanks for sharing your story. Have you checked all ur hormones levels? If ur testosterone level is low and ur dht is crashed alone with the other hormones you will have similar side effects that you mentioned.
Thanks for your replies - my hormone levels are all over the place and currently there is no known treatment or cure for PFS! More research needs to be conducted

Thanks
Edit: just an update to this and I feel very embarrassed saying this but I did in fact get a hair transplant and went back to 1mg per day and I have had absolutely no side effects at all.

What hormones did you analyze? Never got an hormone panel done before, and after two years of Finasteride I'm experiencing side effects.
Should I get a hormone panel done at the request of my general care doctor?

Some can't even recover from a single pill.

wise advice.

I read a comment from someone that could help you : Best treatment plan is a combo of low dose HCG (250-500IU) every other day, Progesterone cream 10-50mg once nightly, an aromatase inhibitor (if needed), and HDAC Inhibitors (butyrates, NAC, lithium, etc.) daily.

You're right though, it's a bigger deal for some than others.

ikr it sad
I will repeat a what I said in another comment regards “all those people” you see giving horror stories.
There are also people on hair loss forums with vested interests.
However, there are ways to relieve symptoms in (some) patients including hormone replacement therapy and viagra. I hope you get better or find a way to cope with it. Report your case.

@@Namanop77 I'm not a doctor, just a fellow victim who has heard/researched around a thousand stories, enough to have a good idea of the range of possibilities. I'm pretty sure you'll improve given your low dose, but let's be humble here. Typically there is partial or complete recovery, often slow, without medical help, and if you're not happy where you are in 3 months, medical help usually improves things (mental symptoms) from there. But let's not assume a bad outcome right now, let's give you 3 months of mental peace first. You'll be in a better place by then, I promise. Please take my earlier advice.

Thank you for doing this, it is very informative, makes me able to make good decisions about my incipient androgenetic alopecia.
josip vran
Exactly.
That's actually not true, we do understand biology somewhat. If you look up DHT you will find that it is not the same as testosterone.

Got side effects from finasteride after 2 weeks and had to get off of it and 2 weeks after that sides fully subsided. I don’t doubt pfs is real and I feel for those going through it
A good Wig is the way and last for a long time If you take good care of it! With a specialist you can make a wig specific for your scalp with more or less hair based on how dry/grass your skin his, so everything can breathe during the day
You live in that states? U got a hair system barber?
Mirtazapine
Trazodone
Zopiclone
Benzodiazepines
Seroquel
Tavor Zolpidem
Doxepine
Melatonine
All these meds lose their effect after a few days and I feel very bad under them.
