It's quite rare for me to cry at movies and TV, but when Peter said to Mantis that she was the greatest Christmas gift ever, I got very close to tearing up.
@@LuckDragonLair Yes! I love how each of the girls from the gang got their own story. Gamora had Infinity War. Nebula (my favorite character in the entire MCU) had Endgame. And Mantis has this.

I loved it, Drax and Mantis together were brilliant, Kevin Bacon fully committing to it and the band but my favorite line in the whole thing was Nebula :- “ you can’t outrun me Bacon”. I’m still chuckling about that now
The band is the Old 97's. They are James Gunn's favorite band. (And one of mine.) He asked lead singer Rhett Miller to help him write the song, and while they were doing it, he just decided the heck with it, and asked them to be the actual band.

The constant self-awareness about actors being pieces of shit, lol... The only thing I can remember that wasn't in your cut was Quill calling Groot out when he tried to say kidnapping Bacon was a bad idea. "I literally just saw you wheel him out in front of everybody!" I think both the opening song and the closing song could easily turn into Christmas classics. We really enjoyed those at my home and we have already added them to the playlist for this years holiday season! I do hope they do a special each year with different characters 😊
6:45 - I just noticed a VERY subtle Easter Egg at this scene while Drax is laughing, and Nebula looks at Him. Pictured in the background around Her face, the Blue with vertical lines reminds me of the TARDIS which was Her (Karen Gillan's) first foray into Space with Doctor Who. So Cool!

That was such a good christmas special. There were so many good bits in here, but the thing that really did it for me, was the scenes with Yondu, especially the last one... I shed a tear right alongside you. Btw. you look amazing in that sweater 👍🤩
While watching the Holiday special, I really did enjoyed Peter Quill aka Star Lord's moment with his sister which is Mantis because it was so emotional and it gives me the feeling that I'm not alone because I am a only child who has more friends that I never got But, Damn,This Christmas special hit me hard. This was the best Marvel projects that takes place around Christmas (along with Hawkeye series)!! Perfect way to end Phase 4!! Rocket finally got Bucky’s arm!! Peter and Mantis being siblings was surprising (hoping both of them don’t get killed off in their final appearance)!!
This is a riff on the old Star Wars Holiday Special, but about 10,000 times better. I will likely be watching this every Christmas from now on 👍 Also the joke about “Despicable Actors” killed me😂
I just realized what Gunn does. He takes side characters and smaller villains and brings their real humanity and silliness. Sort of like how Tarantino takes mid level crooks and makes them his focus in every movie, character that would barely get a speaking scene in a regular movie.

Apparently there was deleted scene in Guardians Vol. 2 during Yondu’s funeral where Mantis did tell Drax about being related to Quill through their father, Ego. Now they made it canon coming off from this Christmas special
This was a sweet, beautiful special. I really loved it was Mantis and Drax being central because I don't think they get enough love. I suspected Mantis was Peter's sister and was glad to be right. Cosmo is a great addition. We are well set up for the upcoming pain in Guardians 3. Mantis in the comics is the Celestial Madonna and a fierce fighter. Knowhere is a Celestial skull. It was owned by The Collector and the city inside was pretty much destroyed in Infinity War. That is what they are rebuilding. This will be a special to watch yearly.
From starting off with one of the only Christmas songs I like (The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl), to giving us a Mantis & Drax road-trip caper, to making Kevin Bacon pretty much the hero that Peter thought he was (though in a different way), this was an out-of-the-park grand-slam by James Gunn. In the original Dan Abnett Andy lanning Guardians of the Galaxy comics the Guardians home base is knowhere so nice to see that is finally happening with the MCU versions of the Guardians team
So much warmth in the heart of this movie. Random thought I had while watching, it's kind of weird how he's called Drax The Destroyer but his primary super power seems to be that he is indestructible. P.s. Knowhere was overgrown in an alternate universe, where T'challa became Starlord. If I had to guess the Collector's entire operation was probably destroyed by Thanos but the skull itself was fine so they were able to buy it up "cheap" as a fixer-uper. I'd love it if it was Nebula and Rocket's idea since they weren't snapped and would have had 5 years to plan on acquiring it. Setting goals and working towards them. They bought a house.
Luv ya reactions 😃 😊 some movies u should check out that u probably haven't seen that u would really like are GrN Torino, Flypaper, Criminal, the Heartbreak kid, and True Lies
I'm a gen x-er who retains a lot of cynicism around certain things (holiday entertainment in general, for one) but this one got to me. I was so happy this was a Mantis story. She's become one of my favorites and I didn't expect we'd even see her have this much screen time. She just cracks me up. I hope that the corporate changes at Disney don't mean the end of these Marvel specials, because so far they've been wonderful. They remind me of the feeling of being a kid in the late 70's/early 80's when there would be a Disney movie on broadcast tv on a Saturday night. Escape from Witch Mountain, for example. (Uh, this was before VCR's, so getting something exciting and different was a special treat.)
@@funnylilgalreacts I agree. It had all the feel good without the saccharine stuff that is often a turn-off. I appreciate the lighter tone after recent mcu films, too. Hey, something nice happened for these heroes! I like that.
A sweet / cheesy and fun Christmas special - unabashedly fluffy and silly but managed a little feels hit with Peter and Mantis at the end. And there will no doubt be a Christmas Awesome Mix from this and it will be on hard rotation in my house.
I am what is know as a "surly bastard" ... buuuut Gunn got me to cry to at exact moments you did lol. Great special for sure , and Gunn is a mad genius.
At the end there you are talking about the movie American Pop by Ralph Bakshi. A character plays Night Moves in the penultimate scene. The animation in this struck me as a call back to Ralph Bakshi's style as well. He also did Lord of the Rings and Heavy Metal. But man, American Pop has been one of my favorite movies since 6th grade, and I've loved Bob Seger ever since as well.
The style isn't Bakshi's - it's called "rotoscoping", drawing animation cels directly over filmed footage of actors. Bakshi used it heavily (too heavily, imo), to the point that he's often associated with the technique even though many, many animators have used it, especially during the seventies and eighties - for instance, you thought Bakshi made Heavy Metal, even though he was *not* one of the half a dozen different animators of that movie.
Sure "Footloose" and "Tremors" are great but "Murder In The First" has one of his best performances and I usually don't like courtroom dramas. BTW, I do know what a turtledove is but if I tell I might end up on Santa's watch list. Another great post, A. Cheers from Florida.
If "Grandma got run over by a Reindeer" became such a Christmas favorite, (I hear it every year!) then "I don't know what Christmas is..." can become one too. Imo. I hope.
28:25 I predict a sniggering Rocket complimenting Bucky on his new arm in a future movie. Nebula knew her way around Earth, she was based out of it for years between Infinity War and Endgame, and had all of the credentials needed to get close to Bucky. The instant I saw Nebula giving a gift to Rocket, I knew it was either Bucky's M249, or his arm.
Knowhere was indeed wrecked by Thanos, which probably explains how they were able to buy it in the first place, why the Collector was willing to part with it, and why it is in need of so much repair. The "What If" series are all things that occurred in alternate realities of the multiverse.
werewolf by night was really good but this was super cool, perfect amount of comedy and necessary holiday moments...that scene with mantis, drax and kevin in the ship was hilarious trashing on actors, they played it perfectly
When James Gunn is also the head of DC now which means he also has the freedom to use DC characters names in his Marvel projects i.e Bruce Wayne / Batman. I'm honestly looking forward to GOTG3 to see which DC reference he puts in there.
So when a Marvel related questions pops up while playing 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon just became extremely easy....lol So Kevin is now officially MCU cannon...loving it
The style of animation is "rotoscoping" where they basically draw the animation over film of real people acting out the scenes. Ralph Bakshi did it a lot - he did the Lord of the Rings animated back in the day as well as "AMerican Pop" th-cam.com/video/vEfx6AegPCk/w-d-xo.html and yes - at 1:45 is Bob Seger's "Night Moves."
Regarding Mantis' fighting skills, in the comics she is an excellent hand-to-hand combat fighter we just didn't get to see it happen in all the movies she was in, Endgame would've been a good opportunity to showcase it but alas it wasn't shown, but I'm happy it was addressed in this special even if it's just a simple easy part.
My favorite thing about this special was seeing how badass Mantis is! Like you, I saw her at the battle in Endgame and was like “what is she gonna do?” but now I know that she was there kicking names and taking a** for sure 😅 love the banter between her and Drax it was hilarious! And just the aesthetic of this whole special was great! P.s. omg you love you some Kevin Bacon I’m so jealous 🤣
I've heard that James GUNN is playing in that first song in this short film. I think he was playing bass, the alien with the glasses (of course) We loved this movie. Even my one picky 19 yr old twin son with autism loved this movie and he really only relates to Groot. LOL I am loving this Special Xmas movie but not looking forward to watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May 2023 as I am hearing rumors that Rocket dies. And I am already upset about this. I will just have to wait and see it stream at home. I get quite loud and emotional. Like I did when Gamora first died. Luckily I saw that at home too.
That would be devastating to lose Rocket, but depending on the story, I would almost feel like it would have been from saving someone in his family. Rocket has learned quite a bit about being selfless over the course of the last couple movies.
At last, we see a hint of the real Mantis from the comics. She is one of the top cosmic level martial artists in the Marvel Universe.... I'm not sure why James Gunn chose to neuter her for the films. Yes, she has empathic abilities, but her combat prowess is legendary in the comics.
"You can't outrun me Bacon!" 🤣 Those little, throw away lines that just land perfectly.
It's quite rare for me to cry at movies and TV, but when Peter said to Mantis that she was the greatest Christmas gift ever, I got very close to tearing up.
Considering she wanted something loving or caring from Drax in GOTG2 (he did in his own way) to have that pure joy from Peter is so frickin wholesome.

I love this special. Great reaction.
I miss wholesome things like this that don’t necessarily revolve around Santa Claus or Christmas romance stories. It came at a perfect time!
Awww surly on the outside, marshmallow on the inside.
@@funnylilgalreacts lol shhh don’t tell anyone 😀
i liked the song the old 97s sang about christmas, and Groots new look and Mantis getting drunk and dancing in the club.
"I don't know what Christmas is" is my new favorite Christmas song.
My mother was obsessed with Bob Seger growing up, so I know all of his music! I knew that animation looked so familiar!
Loved this special! ❤❤
Sure "Footloose" and "Tremors" are great but "Murder In The First" has one of his best performances and I usually don't like courtroom dramas. BTW, I do know what a turtledove is but if I tell I might end up on Santa's watch list. Another great post, A. Cheers from Florida.
Why do I get the feeling turtle dove is dirty 🥴
If "Grandma got run over by a Reindeer" became such a Christmas favorite, (I hear it every year!) then "I don't know what Christmas is..." can become one too.
Imo.
I hope.
Since you mentioned Howard, it would have been interesting to include him because he is from a parallel Earth.
He is definitely not from Earth, but I would’ve loved more Howard.
1:50 - The comics have had DC/Marvel crossovers so maybe all of this will lead to that happening in the films at some point.

I predict a sniggering Rocket complimenting Bucky on his new arm in a future movie.
Did anyone else notice Nebula immediately stand up for Rocket when he was called a raccoon?
Just imagine when Gunn gets the nerve to come out with a Peacemaker Christmas special 🤔🙏
When James Gunn is also the head of DC now which means he also has the freedom to use DC characters names in his Marvel projects i.e Bruce Wayne / Batman. I'm honestly looking forward to GOTG3 to see which DC reference he puts in there.
I want to put Drax and Mantis' laughs in a magic box that I can open whenever I'm feeling like shit.
I hope you enjoy guardians of the galaxy 3, I watched the movie in theatres the other day and I loved it
So when a Marvel related questions pops up while playing 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon just became extremely easy....lol So Kevin is now officially MCU cannon...loving it
The style of animation is "rotoscoping" where they basically draw the animation over film of real people acting out the scenes. Ralph Bakshi did it a lot - he did the Lord of the Rings animated back in the day as well as "AMerican Pop" th-cam.com/video/vEfx6AegPCk/w-d-xo.html and yes - at 1:45 is Bob Seger's "Night Moves."
YES THATS THE ONE!!!! I knew there was something I saw that had the same style! thank you for sharing that!
It was a very cute special, I cried too
Regarding Mantis' fighting skills, in the comics she is an excellent hand-to-hand combat fighter we just didn't get to see it happen in all the movies she was in, Endgame would've been a good opportunity to showcase it but alas it wasn't shown, but I'm happy it was addressed in this special even if it's just a simple easy part.
Rocket did say in Infinity War that he was getting Bucky's arm. "Oh I'm getting that arm."
I love that they used the Smashing Pumpkins Christmas song!
At last, we see a hint of the real Mantis from the comics. She is one of the top cosmic level martial artists in the Marvel Universe.... I'm not sure why James Gunn chose to neuter her for the films. Yes, she has empathic abilities, but her combat prowess is legendary in the comics.
