I have used fish traps like this before with fairly good success. I keep a stick or rock nearby that is large enough to close off the opening of the trap once I have fish in it so it cant get out while grabbing it.

the reason they cant get back out is because of the shape of the trap it is a funnel it works the same way as a crab trap they aren't smart enough to aim for the middle so they cant find the way out
It does work,it just takes patience and usually some good bait.It works really well for large fish and turtles (Les Stroud demonstrated it on Survivorman).As he mentioned in the Video,some can escape if they are left in the Trap for too long,so it's best to check the trap often if you are able to.It's also good to have some sticks that point inwards towards the middle of the trap,this makes it so when the fish/turtle sees in,it deters them from escaping.

a bit off topic but i have seen a fly trap like this ( vertical ) with stinky stuff you add in the bottom and they get stuck in there. we had heaps of them as a kid and I have one now (haven't set it up though).

I used to catch quail this way. Use chicken wire to make a 4 foot round circle, with a quail sized tunnel, leading to the center of trap. 'Course you have to bait it, with trail of seeds,or grain. Also, 'Tis illegal.'
i don't think you can, but the funnel shape of the entrance makes it easier to enter whilst making it harder to leave. thats probably why he suggested a m shape i think?

Two deaths we're unrelated to the corn, the others we're corn related as the fish ate to much corn for its body to pass fast enough, the test showed if smaller fish eat large amounts of corn in short time it can kill them due to the time needed to digest, but if ate slower the only effects we're slow digestion which could cause problems much futher down the line, by when it might not really matter as other factors will already be more concerning for the fish.
If anyone tries this trap don't use that stuff for bait ~ use wet cat food in a can stab some holes in it, throw it in the trap and check it every couple hours because it will fill up with catfish fast.
this is how i caught my fish in my reef. i cut the neck of a bottle and taped it back on but with the opening inside the bottom of it. put some food in it and sand so the bottle stayed sank and its how i caught my clown fish and 2 shrimp instead of chasing them around the tank with a net and stirring up coral sand and scarring the shit out of everyone else.
Urban myth. It already has been proven that fish have a far longer memory than usual. Just take a look at the freshwater/saltwater salmon. They remembered where they were spawned and returned back to the place many years later. Same thing with the freshwater eels up in maine...

Make your trap much bigger. say 10 ft by 10 ft in the same design. Put the sticks close together. Extend the "V" to the middle. The fish will never escape. the edge is 5 feet from the entrance. You can leave it for several days. Come back full of life fish.
Two test studies on fish from 1992 and 1996 showed it had effects on the fish after they we're fed only corn for 54 days although their digestion was slower and growth to 20/20 fish survived the 1992 test. To kill the fish it would take considerable time and the fish may already die from simple age or other factors. Smaller fish also we're tested on in 1996 in which 4 fish died out of 25 over the 54 day period of only corn.
not a bad design, I wonder if using like conifer sprigs, as "netting" to help block holes, would help, especially in areas where the shore is rocky, and unsuited to stickfence style traps. but kudos on getting a fisth to just...mosey on in.

Ive seen these traps described in survival books in more of a C shape with a sharper gate so that the fish cant turn around. Good vid though!

to make it more effective take sticks with pointed tips and place them in the entrance facing inward and at a slight angle. it deters them.
I like the idea. Leaving it overnight would give the fish enough time to find the exit.
