I don't know what's more depressing, the fact that I'm up 2:30 am YouTubing one player boardgames because I have no friends, let alone a girlfriend to play with, or I'm looking for a Christmas present which I will buy and wrap myself and put it under the tree and then pretend to act surprise when I open it on Christmas day 2020

For those of us who still prefer the tactile version, I'm right there with you. You may feel alone, but actually you're not. Just think, when you're up at 2:30 am watching this video, others are too. I also head over to Reddit (r/soloboardgaming) where you can find a great community of solo gamers in discussions but also in live chats (in the middle of the night). And as far as presents, I've already bought 3 games for myself to do just that. Nothing wrong with it! Enjoy them. :)

Last year I watched all kinds of Solo game advice videos, bought myself Field Commander: Napoleon, wrapped it myself and put it under the tree and then pretended to act surprised when I opened it on Christmas Day 2020.

Love your lists! A feast for Odin is so fantastic. Uwe says he makes games solo first then adds multiplayer.
There's no solo experience like Mage Knight! It has everything, from RPG, exploration, conquest, magic, deckbuilding, and trying to play your card intellegently even when you have a bad hand. It's not only the best solo game in my list, but also one of the best game I've ever played.
I want them to make Mage Knight on something like Steam, I don't think we'll ever try the game physically, but I wouldn't mind trying it digitally like Sycthe
@@TheBrothersMurph You can buy Tabletop Simulator on Steam for 19,99 (euro's, not sure what it is in dollars) and it has workshop integration, so you can literally play almost every popular boardgame for free in a fully interactive digital table setting. It's absolutely genius and I've used it to play Mage Knight, Eldritch Horror, Arkham Horror LCG, Lotr LCG, spirit island, gloomhaven, the list is endless.

My favorite solo game too. Setup can be a pain, true, but it's so good and there's so much great content.

Love video and the enthusiasm, some really helpful thoughts too. I'm playing a lot of Zulus on the Ramparts, a solo game I think you will like. The AI simply moves one, some or all of the Zulu units a random number of spaces closer to the defences of Rorkes Drift. You need to use the cards to build defences, fire volleys, put out fires etc. Before you get over run. Simple but effective play but so difficult to get right!
My favorite solo games are finding people playing Welcome To and Cartographers on youtube and to play along!

Right now I am LOVING Blitzkrieg! (solo is as good as 2p). Small box Maquis and Orchard along with the aforementioned. Big box I am digging Death May Die, Tainted Grail, and Vindication. Really excited to play Anachrony

Nice to see you guys! If you like heavy Euro's, Gaia Project has an amazing automa system. If you are ok with crazy rules overheard, Mage Knight is amazing. Arkham Horror LCG is an amazing story driven solo experience (dark ambient music adds a lot). Those are probably my three favorite solo games... Onirim, Too Many Bones, Coffee Roaster, Gloomhaven, and Teotihuacan are also all a good time.
All of these are on the list in some capacity. I would love to see a digital version of Mage Knight, since I don't think we'll ever play the physical game

I LOVE that you guys picked mostly games that are not solo-only. There are a lot of games out there that are 1+ players or like you said, have home-brewed solo variants. These are the game reviews that, as a solo player, I find most helpful. For instance, right now, I am trying to choose my next medium weight game which is rare to find in a solo-only production. I was most interested to hear your comments about Viticulture and Feast for Odin.
As far as my favorite game to solo in this category, it remains Robinson Crusoe: Adventures of a Cursed Island. Oh my, so good solo. After all, Robinson didn't have his BFF with him, just Friday and Skip, the dog.
My top 5 would be Tainted Grail, Feast for Odin, 7th Continent, Arkham Horror LCG and Kingdom Death Monster (in no particular order, I love them all too much to order them!).

Great list guys. Roll Player and Call to Adventure are two great quick games to paly solo. Love the West Kingdom games solo. Too many good ones to mention.

It's a real bummer; as I can't play at home, most of my games are at other people's flats! Just bought Wingspan to solo, but also teach one of my brothers. The camping table is coming out. Will have to look at the other games I've been saving for later introduction to my groups. Keep up the good work. You've given me some ideas. It would be a long 12 weeks with games.
Great choice on AFFO! Blackout Hong Kong solo is one you guys might like. The multi player has very limited interaction anyway, and the solo makes an unlucky dice roll feel more like a challenge to overcome. The final scoring is points based and you get a certain # of ⭐️ based on how many points you score in a game (you have to hit a minimum threshold to score any ⭐️) at the end of the campaign you add up your stars for a final rating.
We've gotten mixed reviews from friends on Blackout, but we've still wanted to try it. And knowing it's got a good solo surely helps its chances
Here are some more honourable mentions to consider... Race for The Galaxy and Clans of Caledonia - which have solo modes. Castles of Burgundy, Stone Age and Azul are fantastic two player games that can still be enjoyed as one playing two. When I get real ambitious and play me, myself and I 3 player solo mode, Kingsburg 2nd edition can be challenging yet do-able. But my new favourite game is Village plus expansions and with Village Port it is a blast as solo, 2 or 3 player counts! Like your channel keep up the great work 👍✌️🆗😁✅👌
I love watching videos from March when Covid was really starting to get kicked off. Some age well, some don't. Can't wait to see what things look like in 5 years and coming across mentions of Covid.
Nice list. 4 of 10 are in my collections and some of my favorites for solo play. Feast for Odin, Terraforming Mars, Paladins, and Empires of the North. Ex libris is on my 'want in trade' list. I think my wife will enjoy that one.

Awkward Guests is fantastic solo using the companion app. It streamlines everything into a smooth, tense experience as you try to uncover that one last clue to crack the case wide open before you run out of time

I love putting games on the table to play solo. Pandemic, Tiny Epic Galaxies, Space Empires. Just love playing games.

Spirit Island is an AMAZING co-op game. Haven't tried it solo but I figure it would be great.

I haven't played a lot of games solo, but Ex Libris is my favorite game to play solo. In this time of self isolation, I've been looking to play more of my games that have a solo mode. I was surprised just now to find out that I have played more of the ones with official solo variants solo than I haven't. I have 17 games that have unofficial solo variants, which I plan to work in at some point. My second favorite game to solo is Spell Smashers.
I solo a lot of Robinson Crusoe and Tainted Grail lately.
My roommate is still waiting on his copy of Tainted Grail, I'm going to have to paint the whole thing lol

I recently refound a great solo game. Electric Football is a great solo game. Granted there are some things you need to work on before the game is playable/enjoyable but there is an active community and a ton of solo rules to chose from and tutorials as well.

Wingspan was very close to making this list. Stonemaier does them some good solo's
I love playing Heroes of Land, Air, and Sea solo. It comes with an Automa deck that you can make copies for multiple AI. Then each AI plays differently based on the faction it is assigned. I’ve played 3 AI factions and it was so much fun.
That's super cool! We have wanted to try HoLAS really bad! But no one we know has it :(
Sprawlopolis. Super thinky, super clever, super fast, loads of different ways to score each game and fits in your pocket

I love Champions and Wingspan solo. Check this out for Wingspan. myautoma.github.io/#wingspan You wont have to set up anything and makes set up and tear down AND the scoring each round and at the end amazing. I also proxied the Champion hero decks so I can try them out. Can’t wait until they finally restock

Although it's not my favorite game, I do agree that Feast for Odin is a great solo game. It's the game that got me into accepting solo gaming. It's just so fun to try to beat your score and try new strategies. With the expansion it's even better. Uwe's games just work well at solo count
Gates of Loyang, Nusfjord, Glass Road and Space hulk death angel are other good solo games.
I play a variant of Legendary where I use a deck of Ambition cards and a deck of Horror cards. I draw an Ambition card right after drawing a Villain card. I play a Horror card right after defeating a Mastermind Tactic. Creates some nice variation, story and difficulty to the game. It also balances difficulty while only having to play 1 hand. As a lot of people play 2 handed solo games.

Have you played Nusfjord? It has same mechanic as FFO in that you use 2 colours, 1 each round blocking yourself. Its a quick game as well. Definitely worth checking out

You should give a try to the solo of Tramways once you find out the setup its ready in 3 minutes, and plays in 1/2 hour it delivers a good and fast little puzzle great for solo and slightly aggresive multiplayer game, really fun
I totally agree with your number 1. The beat your own score mechanic is kinda meh, but there isn't really an AI to get in your way and it's fun to just build your village and try and become a successful jarldom. I also play with the "if you don't beat 100 you lose" rule. I finally "beat" it on solo a few nights ago and got a score of 143. Felt so satisfied.
Getting a really good score in solo Feast is soooooo satisfying!
You guys are already fans of Fleet: The Dice Game. It's one of my favorites to solo. Plays fast. Easy upkeep.

@@TheBrothersMurph You Can Solo That! Last page of rulebook. When the bot drafts dice, they eliminate the actions on your score sheet starting from the bottom of that die's column. A couple of light games that I like to solo are Sagrada & Welcome to . . . For a heavier and very thematic experience, Robinson Crusoe 2nd edition is one that I have played most often. I like all of the replay ability with all of the different scenarios even though I mostly play the Scenario One.
We've always heard that Sagrada solo is really really good! Been wanting to try it!

Arena The Contest is fantastic in solo. It’s a dungeon skirmish kickstarter only game. Also 7th Continent and Marvel Legendary.
I played Zombicide Black Plague/Green Horde last week, and I've done it a few times before. You just need to keep track of which hero you activate. I just put a peg in the "0" slot of the wounds and take them out one round, then place them back in on the next. I love it, because I always tell a little story as I go. Have the characters yelling at each other....

Ha!!! Do you have the companion app? Makes playing the game sooo much easier, and I can assume it would make solo-ing much much easier as well. As everything is done in the app. The only physical things you need are the boards, tokens, and mini's. Everything else, cards, dashboards, etc is in the app. We literally recycled everything else in that game because we'll never go back

Try Maquis and Infection: Humanity’s Last Gasp, two of my fav purely solo games. Also, there is a really good homebrew solo variant for For Sale believe it or not on BGG, effectively makes an auction game solo.
Maquis has been mentioned a few times here, we've got to check it out. What is the game about?
@@TheBrothersMurph You play the French Resistance during WWII. It's a pure solo worker placement game. There are about 18 missions in the game and every game you pick 2 at random, and they all require completely different things to be done, so while the game will be the same game, you'll be doing different things every time. You definitely get better at it as you play more as well, only takes about a half hour per game.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the solo for Sagrada.
It's fun, but also very hard to win, even with access to 5 tool, which they say it's the easy mode.

Mr Cabbagehead’s Garden by LudiCreations! It was a Kickstarter project a couple years ago. I am playing it now and it is more enjoyable each time I play it! (The game might be hard to find now.)

For me,at least now, it's definitely Star Trek Frontiers and Lord Of The Rings Journeys in Middle Earth.
I just found that It's a Wonderful World has a fantastic and addicting solo mode. Otherwise Lord of the Rings LCG has always good been to me. Onirim is alot of fun.
LoTR LCG has been solo'd many many times in our household

RC solo is really good.
I don't know why but we've never had much interest in RC solo.I think if we are going to die horribly, we want to do it with someone lol

@@TheBrothersMurph yes and the dog which helps with exploring or hunting actions so still useful. You also get morale boosts each morale phase which helps with special abilities for sure

I am not a solo player at all but one I like a lot is Trismegistus the AI is very simple (not as easy as AFFO) to use but you still have the same experience of the game. The only bad thing it has is that I find it a little bit too easy to beat.

There is a small plaid hat game called raxxon. Trying to rescue survivors of a zombie apocalypse, solo this game can be challenging. Its a small box game that i feel got unrecognized. Currently playing wingspan solo, very easy automa like all stonemire games great solo games.
Was that the one that had that odd release? Where you had to be recommended or something?
Yes, it was like you were secretly being recruited to save survivors, and you had to know someone who already had it to get it.

If there is a decision to be made between games, I tend to sway in the direction of buying those with a solid solo, other things being roughly equal. Games are fairly expensive so increasing the chance of it hitting the table is only a good thing…. For me at least. I find board games, even solo more engaging generally than video games nowadays. Nobody asked for it but there go…. My opinion! 🧐

Friday is not that hard *IF* you burn life down a TON to purge out crappy cards hard at the very beginning until you have a super slim, high powered deck. Then power through the yellow and red levels. It’s a lot easier that way.
Hey ya butts, Too Many Bones, Mage Knight, Robinson Crusoe, This War of Mine (ooof, but oh such brilliant gameplay), and Marvel Champions are all easily in my top ten. Several are in my top five. I don't know which is my favorite. Champions is my most played of that bunch, but that has more to do with setup-playtime-takedown time (even though I love it) than anything. If Too Many Bones were so easy, I'd play it daily. Same for the others... except maybe This War of Mine. Too real.

We found that Rugwort gets too many points for uncompleted event and it makes it soooo hard. We like this one but we house rule that to make it manageable
