In an interview, REN said that he got a call at 3am from his friend's Mom saying that his friend was calling around saying goodbye to everyone. REN got dressed and went out on foot looking for him while calling his phone repeatedly. About 3 minutes before REN got to the bridge, his friend's cell phone went out of service. REN said that he himself was suicidal at that time because of everything going on in his life (this was shortly after he got sick and he and Sony parted ways) and that he was likely going to end it himself as well. He then went through the process of dealing with his friend being gone and seeing what it did to everyone around him and decided that he could never do that to all of his family and friends. So, in a tragic irony, his friend ending it quite possibly saved REN's life.
It's as if someone played the broken telephone game with the facts of the situation and you were the person that was the last telephone. The facts are out there and these are not quite them.
This track is in remembrance of his late friend Joe Hughes. Many people believe this was filmed on the same bridge that Joe was last seen on, but it is not. What I most like to see in the reactions is the surprise that Ren provokes. In fact Ren is unique among many. We are lucky to be contemporaries of such a rarity... an artist who appears only every few years. And with such companions.
Ren is the Shakespeare of our time. An artist, musician a poet. A man who lays bare his pain and bleeds in his lyrics. He is Truly sensational. I have had the honour of seeing Ren busking on the streets of Brighton I recommend you watch some of those too. The first time I heard him on the streets I was walking out of M&S and I was just possessed by his voice. I always knew he would get the recognition he deserves. I've never heard anyone like him he's just simply amazing. Every time I went to the city centre I always looked for Ren unhappy lucky enough to see him on the streets three times every time magnificent.

There is no evidence he jumped from that bridge, no police reports nor news reports that say he jumped, no one seen him jump, nor did anyone see him on that bridge that day. Joe has always joked about jumping from a bridge but never does so. So unless there is another news report that said he did, and there were witnesses, and or you were there, you can't say he committed suicide. Joe's body BTW was never found, which eventually would of floated if he did jump.

Great reaction ! first of all. Your Christian values gives a certain meaning to some of the lyrics which i feel is of value. Second, I've listened to this song perhaps 20 - 30 times over the last six weeks or so. I've also listened to a dozen other songs by REN the same amount of times. AND in one way it's a relief not o be constantly listening to great music of the past .... Bach, Billy Holiday, Beethoven, Nina Simone, Purcell, Led Zeppelin, Beyonce, Bob Dylan ... It may be worth checking out Fingers by Chinchilla to see some of her solo stuff. The 'live' version with the red background being, imo, the best version. Thank you for the reaction. Struggled with extreme depression all my life and have been admitted to a crissi clinic after a 3rd failed attempt. Ren has helped me more than anything else in my life. I still have the depression, but also a better perspective on life.
Chinchilla is talented AF. Ren crossovers are just the tip of her iceberg. Please try her "Vero Presents: Chinchilla - Fingers live". It is one of the best live performances, I have ever heard.
Its interesting that most people who are attempting or completing the act of unaliving themselves achieve a sense of numbness. It is both haunting and, sadly hopeful in that they believe that pain will end. Their personal pain may cease, but they do not realize in this (half reality state) that their pain is transmitted to everyone who loves them.
Please go down the Ren-hole. There's so much good music to discover. Whether it's busking on London streets, or doing one-take live songs like Hi Ren!, The Tale of Jenny and Screech, Chalk outlines live with Chinchilla, and The Hunger...there's just no end to his talent.
Thank you for your genuine heartfelt reaction. It was interesting to hear you refer to them as "musical soulmates," because Ren refers to Chinchilla as his musical sibling. As for "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010 by jumping off the Menai Suspension Bridge; his body was never recovered. Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs, "Freckled Angels" being one example. It is dedicated to Joe Hughes. Someone else commented that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from, however, others have stated that this is misinformation. Their live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it due to my own daily struggles. Although, losing your best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would recommend you check out their live performance of "Chalk Outlines." Also, their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk In Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable. I hope you will continue to dive into Ren's and Chinchilla's catalogs.

The very beginning of this reminded me of "Barton Hollow" by The Civil Wars. Completely different style of music, but you should give it a try. I think you'll like it. The vocals will blow you away.
The ending ALWAYS crushes me. I've lost sooo many beautiful people to suicide growing up. And after joining the military I've lost more and more. Be it family and friends those phone calls never get easier,they get infinitely harder. And there's days when I'm so jealous of them because they don't have to deal with this existence anymore. But then I force myself to relieve and remember how I felt with each and every wake, funeral and memorial service. It sucks I have to do that but some days that's the only thing that works. And the mental health industry throughout the world is an absolute joke. Especially here in the States, even more so the people at the Veterans Administration are absolute clowns. I remember back in 2008 when I finally looked for help and went to their psychiatrists the dude hardly listened to me and I was clearly there for my MENTAL health, not an injuries, and he was a psychiatrist, he wrote me a prescription for Vicodin... I hate when shrinks run to the prescription pad right away instead of listening for a whole to figure me out but he didn't even write me any scripts for antidepressants, anti-psycotics, benzo's, none of those. He wrote me script for opioid pain medication. I laughed and said to him listen Doc I know my brain is broken, but pain killers aren't the cure. Obviously he didn't like that statement and he really didn't like it when I called him a drug dealer with a PhD. And all he's doing is getting us hooked on opioids and he part of the problem why so many of us Veterans are dying. If he wasn't in his 60's I would've given him a reason to need the Vicodin and happily took that assault charge. Like seriously WTF!

Great reaction ! first of all. Your Christian values gives a certain meaning to some of the lyrics which i feel is of value. Second, I've listened to this song perhaps 20 - 30 times over the last six weeks or so. I've also listened to a dozen other songs by REN the same amount of times. AND in one way it's a relief not o be constantly listening to great music of the past .... Bach, Billy Holiday, Beethoven, Nina Simone, Purcell, Led Zeppelin, Beyonce, Bob Dylan ... To find a man (and his elemental counterpart Chinchilla) is a bright light in the cosmos, a flaming asteroid burning through the atmosphere .... NOW .... You said much that i liked a lot

Thank you for the reaction. Struggled with extreme depression all my life and have been admitted to a crissi clinic after a 3rd failed attempt. Ren has helped me more than anything else in my life. I still have the depression, but also a better perspective on life.

Its interesting that most people who are attempting or completing the act of unaliving themselves achieve a sense of numbness. It is both haunting and, sadly hopeful in that they believe that pain will end. Their personal pain may cease, but they do not realize in this (half reality state) that their pain is transmitted to everyone who loves them.
Please go down the Ren-hole. There's so much good music to discover. Whether it's busking on London streets, or doing one-take live songs like Hi Ren!, The Tale of Jenny and Screech, Chalk outlines live with Chinchilla, and The Hunger...there's just no end to his talent.

Thank you for your genuine heartfelt reaction. It was interesting to hear you refer to them as "musical soulmates," because Ren refers to Chinchilla as his musical sibling. As for "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010 by jumping off the Menai Suspension Bridge; his body was never recovered. Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs, "Freckled Angels" being one example. It is dedicated to Joe Hughes. Someone else commented that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from, however, others have stated that this is misinformation.
Their live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it due to my own daily struggles. Although, losing your best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would recommend you check out their live performance of "Chalk Outlines." Also, their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk In Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable.
I hope you will continue to dive into Ren's and Chinchilla's catalogs.

The ending ALWAYS crushes me. I've lost sooo many beautiful people to suicide growing up. And after joining the military I've lost more and more. Be it family and friends those phone calls never get easier,they get infinitely harder. And there's days when I'm so jealous of them because they don't have to deal with this existence anymore. But then I force myself to relieve and remember how I felt with each and every wake, funeral and memorial service. It sucks I have to do that but some days that's the only thing that works.
And the mental health industry throughout the world is an absolute joke. Especially here in the States, even more so the people at the Veterans Administration are absolute clowns. I remember back in 2008 when I finally looked for help and went to their psychiatrists the dude hardly listened to me and I was clearly there for my MENTAL health, not an injuries, and he was a psychiatrist, he wrote me a prescription for Vicodin... I hate when shrinks run to the prescription pad right away instead of listening for a whole to figure me out but he didn't even write me any scripts for antidepressants, anti-psycotics, benzo's, none of those. He wrote me script for opioid pain medication. I laughed and said to him listen Doc I know my brain is broken, but pain killers aren't the cure. Obviously he didn't like that statement and he really didn't like it when I called him a drug dealer with a PhD. And all he's doing is getting us hooked on opioids and he part of the problem why so many of us Veterans are dying. If he wasn't in his 60's I would've given him a reason to need the Vicodin and happily took that assault charge. Like seriously WTF!

This is my favorite piece of contemporary music and my favorite duet ever! For me this song so tragically describes the pain that Ren thought his friend could have been feeling in his isolation.

Yes! I think people overlook the spiritual aspect of his music. Maybe you have to have been raised in church to get the references, but he makes A LOT of them.
