    Anyone please feel free to correct me if I am wrong since it's been like a year since I reevaluated all the lore:
    So to iterate on the Sarruf Rufus bit:
    AVALANCHE was originally a world preservation initiative started in Cosmo Canyon by people who aligned themselves with Planetology. Rufus coopted this in opposition to his father. He funded the AVALANCHE Midgar HQ. Our AVALANCHE was a splinter cell that actually wanted to cause eco-terrorism to make an effort to scare Shinra out of the Neo-Midgar operation. The reason why non of the AVALANCHE Midgar HQ don't mess with our AVALANCHE is because ours are basically straight up terrorists without nothing more than a straight up hatred for Shinra.
    Now lets go back to AVALANCHE Midgar HQ. These guys are being secretly funded by Rufus to oust his father (peacefully)... but regrettably his father is killed by Sephiroth clone.
    Rufus, back in the day wanted to assassinate his father using his ties with Wutai, but he was thwarted by old guard Turks who essentially lived under the hand of President Shinra. They had him detained and basically put him on leave because it would be a PR disaster if people found out that his own son was against the current paradigm of Shinra.
    During Crisis core, Rufus builds rapport with Wutai, while Director Lazard (his illegitimate brother) holds the reins on the SOLDIER operation. Lazard was actually embezzeling money to Wutai (perhaps to Rufus) and Dr. Hollander to build a better counter-initiative to strike back against President Shinra from the inside. Lazard was a damaged child, apparently/supposedly a son to a whore that President Shinra engaged with and had to live in squalor while Shinra took everything from the people. As a revenge plot, while never explained, Lazard eventually gets his station as director of SOLDIER and attempts to overthrow Shinra from within while Rufus overthrows it from without. These two incidents coincide but are not confirmed to be actually a collaborative effort. This is why you see Dr. Hollander making Gensis clones as an army which were then interspersed into the war at Fort Tamblin when Zack says "these aren't Wutai troops". In actuality, they were the defector from the war who sided with Genesis and the ones who confronted Angeal and Zack were trying to recruit them into fighting Shinra. Dr. Hollander's and Lazard's revenge plots fail, Angeal is lost to the degradation in hopes of helping out Genesis, Sephiroth goes batshit insane, and Zack is murdered in the cover up for EVERYTHING.
    It wouldn't be until after the tensions of losing all of the legendary SOLDIER 1st Classes that Rufus Shinra would return with the Turks as allies this time (that's a whole other story) immediately after his father dies.
    If you pay attention to what Glenn says during their confrontation for the first time:
    He mentions that he congratulates Rufus for taking up the mantle (mockingly) after his father was murdered (which is what he was not trying to do). Glenn also mentions that Sarruf and President Shinra made an armistice (which we now know was Rufus) and irks him on for saying that it would be nice if suddenly Wutai and Shinra could work together to get the Magnus Materia to achieve peace... asserting the idea that Wutai could in theory do so. This is a sleight as a declaration of war but also served as an ultimatum for Rufus because he is both the new President Shinra AND Sarruf, so Glenn knows Rufus can't play both sides of the war. He forces Rufus to take a side, and ultimately, because Midgar was severely damaged (which is why he gives our party the chance to leave because needs to focus on rebuilding) Rufus chooses his own people and forsakes his role as Sarruf. Glenn then uses the name recognition of "Sarruf" as means to instill fear of war because now Rufus can't do shit to speak out about it AND the name alone has the authority to actually enact declarations of war and affect the interim government of Wutai.

      damn that is fucking cool. it's a shame that so much of the in depth lore of this (and a lot of final fantasy titles - *cough* 15 *cough*) is spread out across multiple different games and media instead of all being neatly packaged into one title - i understand this is a trilogy series that focuses on cloud and friends, but there is a ton of backstory and world building that you don't ever get to see unless you're some crazy lore maniac.

    "He looks like a Kingdom Hearts character" is said about the character designed by Nomura, the guy who designed the FF7 cast as well as the Kingdom Hearts characters.

    jeez, I've never felt so out of step with everyone else. By the time you get the boat and it unlocks all the side content I was excited for it and to do more, like hell yes there's more to experience.

      I feel the same, but I understand why some people say it's a bit much. I always just looked at it as usually an excuse to play more of the combat, which... YES PLEASE
      What I have no patience for is when someone walks into Nibelheim feeling burnt out, and then says "well, time to collect every one of these stupid floating onions. Whoa! Now I feel MORE burnt out!" 😮
      I'm glad the second "real story" shit starts happening, Pat is re-engaged and seems interested, but WOOF.

      After playing Remake before Rebirth, I got the vibe that the women who volunteer do so to get out of financial straits or receive a favor from Corneo. There's even a down on their luck NPC couple in Wall Market considering the option to get out of debt. The whole situation's fucked no matter how you see it.

      for sure, especially since the game unlocks an additional 1-3 side quests in EACH region, plus the Pirate stuff, plus the Gilgamesh stuff, plus the QB stuff, its ridiculous. I ended up completing all of the ch. 12 and 13 side content after beating the game.

    Shame you ain't doing the side content on stream. I understand why of course, just disappointed. If there was one you should absolutely do on stream, it's the final protorelic quest in the Meridian Ocean. That one's an absolute banger.

      ngl I get the impression that people who hate on Aerith or Tifa just aren't actually that into ff7, since Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa are all pretty vital to each other's character arcs and the story at large🤷‍♂️

    That Wedge scene legit feels just like going from Star Wars The Last Jedi into Rise of Skywalker. Retconning or fixing annoying ideas. Maybe there were going to be tons of things different in this game compared to OG, but someone thought better. People die at times that matter in OG, if you start messing with stuff you could easily make plot holes that never existed before. Like why wouldn't Barret's Avalanche follow the gang if they lived? Wtf would actually happen if Deepground took over Midgar? What if we actually had agreed to leave Rufus alone? Wouldnt we just attack him once he did something we didnt like?

  • @DemonFireRain

    does pat have nothing in between "best thing ever" and "absolutely awful". The protorelic stuff in cosmo canyon isn't even bad. I thought the mini game was fun. It didn't blow me away but it wasn't "terrible" or "awful".

    • @Jumungous
      @Jumungous หลายเดือนก่อน

      He said on the podcast once that he uses declarative "power" statements because otherwise he "wouldn't say anything at all," which might just be a reflection of his thing about "conflict is the driving force of all life." The Lex Luthor bit, etc.
      Hard to know exactly how much of that statement itself is just to elicit a reaction, but it seems to help him thrive off of saying things that upset people, rather than avoid it.

    • @DemonFireRain
      @DemonFireRain หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Jumungous I'm convinced it's all because he has no one to reign him in, he has been ridiculous on the podcast before but in general I find his discussions with Woolie good and more often productive than they are frustrating. But I can't watch the Pat stream at all anymore, he turns insufferable when he's alone.

    • @Jumungous
      @Jumungous หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DemonFireRain Streaming straight obliterates the ability to focus, and there are plenty of financial reasons to not do anything differently. The LP format was a sweet spot bc of the focus that was kind of built into recording them.
