Loverboy was in heavy rotation in the 80s on MTV and they ruled the waves for a while at the time. And yes, the title to the song was one that resonated with everyone back then because the 80s was all about working for the weekend.
Yep... that 9-to-5 grind (which became more than just 9-to-5, more like 6-to-6, or longer)... bust your ass all week, get shitfaced all weekend. Rinse & repeat, lol.
This song was used in one of SNL's best sketch ever with Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley. Please do yourself a favor and watch it to see why it's become such a classic.
Loverboy and ZZ Top came to a town near me many moons ago. I bought tickets for me, my mom, my step dad, and my girlfriend. We all knew both bands, but only to varying degrees. When we got to the concert, we realized that we all knew the words to practically every song both bands played. A lot of nostalgia paints the past with gold, but it was a pretty mindblowing show with all factors in play.
My town is getting shows from Iron Maiden, Whitesnake (with Steel Panther), Kiss and Anthrax (with Municipal Waste) in span of 5 months. 80s music fan in me is SCREAMING.
Yes! As a Canuck Lex I salute you! You should try April Wine, Toronto, Trooper, Lee Aaron (Canada's Metal Queen... from my home town if Belleville Ontario. Lol), and the Headpins just to name a few. Canada knows how to rock too!
Lex, I have to ask, do you wear that shirt every time it's a Canadian band?! Cause it works! This song is really a universal anthem! (except for those that do work on the weekends). You're right Brad, didn't matter, work, school, this was what we had our sights set on, Friday and Saturday night!!
Some great early 80s Canadian rock n roll right there ! Loverboy had some hits 🇨🇦 Another great Canadian band to check out is April Wine. Love your channel guys especially Lex's swag 😁 ✌❤🇨🇦
Every Friday at 5PM DJ's across America's FM radio stations, played this song..usually with a train whistle blowing off to sound 'Quit'n Time." Weekend is officially here.
Ok, Lex, here's the explanation of why you felt there were two different songs: Everybody's working for the weekend: major key = hapinness, positive vibes You want a piece of my heart: minor key = darker, sadder vibes 🙂
I used to be a road manager for band and we opened a show for this band. Mike Reno, their lead singer, traveled with his own personal massage therapist. 5 mins after they finished their encore he was stretched out on a table backstage. Always thought that was an odd ball kind of thing
I saw Loverboy in concert and liked them, they were opening for somebody else. But this particular song got played so constantly on the radio I got sick of it. This is the first time listening to it and literally decades and it really is a pretty good song. I think they set one tone to talk about just trying to get through the week and the relationship stuff and then it goes up into that major key positive surge to represent the feeling of it's finally the weekend.
Good 80's songs from Loverboy, here on the west coast CANADA. LISTEN to TROOPER - 'Raise a little HELL' from the 70's ALL Canadian band, bunch of great songs
40 years old 🎂 Written by Mike Reno and Paul Dean. Produced by Paul and late Bruce Fairbairn. Engineered by Bob Rock. Recorded in Little Mountain Sound, Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦 I passed by the studio, but never came across them...I think! I was a boy then 🙄 This was peak Loverboy. 💘 The next year, Loverboy won so many Juno awards that host David Foster renamed the show as the Loverboy Awards! Back in the day, when radio was still the main medium for music, local stations would play this song on Fridays at 5PM, just as we were punching out from work.
When I wasin high school in rural southern Nevada, during the early 1980s, KOMP FM would play this song sometime every Friday, and that is how we kicked off weekends, during the early 1980s
I'd say these guys were sort of the prototype for Bon Jovi, that type of band, a little bit more female friendly rock. They toured with Triumph when I saw them. Lots of pretty ladies there. Triumph kicked arse.
WOW.....Two of my favourite favourites in one day .....and two of the songs I'd always secretly deep down hoped would get aired..... Most people raved over Turn Me Loose, but this one.....this was the one that got me..... I still get emotional and tear up a bit when I drum to this....thinking of the girl who got away around the same time I first heard this......all those years ago. For me,a trifecta today would be you guys doing Take It Easy by Andy Taylor. But this one.....in my Top 3 of all time.
Too bad you didn't to the video, complete with the singer wearing his aerobics workout gear, complete with headband and handkerchief around his neck. lmao.
Loverboy was great. Reno was amazing live! Couple guys from Streetheart and good to go. Seen them open for ZZ Top back in the day. Reno was a beast!! Live, Loud And Loose, the cd you have to find. Time capsule.
Take Me to the Top will always be my favorite Loverboy song. Maybe one of these ya'll can react to it. Totally different feel than anything else they recorded.
Yes, in my punk-ass youth we called this 'simple' while chomping on more intricate and heavier rock. Now that I'm older I still find it simple, but also well structured, easy to follow with pleasant chord changes and a leaning towards the beat. Plus the lyrics are very positive. I had to add after hearing end discussion that the differences in the writing between Dean and Reno are quite stark. Reno leans towards the major scales while Dean's guitar parts hit a lot of minor scales in his contributing parts. You can pick this up in the Lennon/McCartney writing as well as others.
I remember watching them (on tv) perform this for Princess Diana and Prince Charles. The former was all about it. The latter, you could tell wasn't into rock music but liked it as well.
Their best song was "Take Me To the Top." This one was a Friday 5 PM radio play throughout the 1980's. That's if anyone made it to the weekend to party with all the Happy Hours at the bars. Has the Cow Bell, can't be too bad if it has Cow Bell.
Just AOR guys, I remember a day when we didn't care about genres and putting music in little boxes. I remember hearing it on the radio when it first came out and its always been a favourite song of mine. We were always working for the weekend back then and to quote another great track always had Friday on our minds.
There is a live concert where a fan charged the stage and grabbed Mike Reno from behind and security had to peel her off and somehow Reno didn't miss a note he was singing.
Ooooh y'all could totally do sit com series reaction for Brad, expose him to your faves that you liked best Lex. I suggest 1981 sit coms sense that's when this song came out.
SNL Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze dancing best ever.
Love how the judges legit acted torn lol
Oh yes, Brad and Lex need to do a review of that iconic SNL skit!
Yep! Can't hear this song without picturing that 😂
@@paranoidewok6772 Considering how hard Farley went in during that skit, I would have been torn too.
Yes 😁
Lex is SUCH A VIBE. Every. Time.
Loverboy, from Vancouver BC, one of their best songs, for sure! "The Kid Is Hot Tonight" is a definite banger, too!

I can't hear this song without thinking about those 2 absolute legends. RIP Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze.
When I was in school for VFX one of my classmates cut himself into that scene, dancing right between them.
Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze chip and dale's SNL skit
"Turn Me Loose" & "Lucky Ones" are two songs you must react to!
I think they did Turn Me Loose already.
LJ....yes
@@brettkenschaft4239 I'll look for it. Thanks!

Lex likes dad rock lol
As a Canuck I never needed to buy Loverboy - all you needed was a radio - and I had a Sony Walkman with a radio ;)
I'm seeing them in June along with REO Speedwagon and Styx, 80's Heaven.
💥💥💥💥💥💥💥👍😎
Nice. At first I wasn't sure about Gowan becoming the new lead singer of Styx but he's done a masterful job.
My town is getting shows from Iron Maiden, Whitesnake (with Steel Panther), Kiss and Anthrax (with Municipal Waste) in span of 5 months. 80s music fan in me is SCREAMING.
Hey from Vancouver :) Lex looking great decked out in Canadian gear!
Absolutely love the 80s , so fun and turned up. Mike Reno has a great rock and roll voice and lover boy has a great sound. Get lucky is a great album.
An Ultimate '80s party song, back when the weekend started on Thursday night.
This takes me back to high school, 1981 every time you turn on the radio it was playing.
100%
Saw them circa 81-82ish. Cape Cod Coliseum
"WHEN IT'S OVER" LOVERBOY
Such a tear-jerker. I wonder if Lex would cry.
Where I use to live in Alabama the largest local radio station played this every Friday at exactly 5pm
Lex once again wearing the Canadian ensemble for the Canuck bands ! 🇨🇦
Looks awesome!
I have bean trying to figure oot what that was all aboot. Thanks for clearing that up and sowry!

From my home town of Vancouver. 😃🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Loverboy had some great hits! Check out: "Lovin' Every Minute of It" and "Turn Me Loose" 😎😎
They have already reacted to both of those songs.
@@txrojas Thanks! I'll check them out.
I saw Loverboy and The Hooters in concert back in the 80's. Awesome concert...
The nostalgia. 😢
Imagine these guys opening Live for Triumph. This happened in 1981 in Kansas City. Awesome show!
Sweet!
I saw them when they opened for Journey! It was a great night!
This is so early '80's! I used to have it on cassette lol. I loved this song!
every time i hear this song all i can think of is Chris Farley dancing on snl
Loverboy got their start in Calgary Alberta, then settled into Vancouver BC

Now, the singer (Mike Reno) does radio rock jingles for car dealerships in Vancouver.
Damn. This song takes me back to like age 4-5 hearing this on the radio or my older brother playing it in his room. Good times.
Musical term is point/counter-point.
Every Friday at 5PM DJ's across America's FM radio stations, played this song..usually with a train whistle blowing off to sound 'Quit'n Time." Weekend is officially here.
With a Fred Flintstone added in.
This song always reminds me of the SNL skit where Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley had a “dance off” RIP to two people who left this world too soon.
This song should be played first thing every Friday morning, on your way to work.
That's exactly what should happen
Fav song back in the 80’s heading home on Friday
5 0’clock whistle WKLS 😂
Canada loves Lex!
Every Friday at 5pm on 96 rock in Atlanta. Most people getting off from work. I was on my way to work. Had to crank that song up. Great reaction!
Same in NYC back in the mid to late 80's
This is a Friday afternoon driving tune. Its a get ready for the weekend song.
Ah, back to my high school theme music...the good ol'days , that was a great album.
next has to be "turn me loose" Loverboy
I still listen to this song
They actually did that one already
These guys used to drop into my friend's dad's motorcycle shop when they were at their height in the early 80s.
A lot of memories packed in this song for me.
Brad & Lex, their "The Kid Is Hot Tonite" and "Hot Girls In Love" are next for you!!

For a much earlier "working for the weekend" concept, try the Easybeats' "Friday on My Mind." A 60s hit but holds its own even now.

Great observation! I've got to agree with you!
Turn Me Loose and Take Me To The Top are two great tunes by them.
Early 80's lover boy tickets $5 dollars , never heard of them before. But that's how it was L.A. at the time.
Reminds me of Ben Stiller in the coal mine in Zoolander.😂
good band from Canada
Great hook, great tone.
I'm pretty sure they already did that . I believe it was the first Lover boy song they did .

Loverboy the ultimate Canadian party band
First Rock concert I ever went to was in 1986 .... Loverboy and warming up was The Hooters!
Had a little bit of that Chugging riff, like Barracuda, This Flight Tonight vibe.
Great Canadian band that don't get the respect they deserve anymore.
Hey David....saw them with Journey and Joan Jett in 81!!!
Loverboy -"Turn Me Loose" is a rocker

The two parts are verse and chorus. Usually there's a middle bit called a bridge.
