Very rare to happen in Winnipeg. If the snow ploughs are out, they are followed by front end loaders that clear out most of the snow and ice that gets pushed into a driveway. Our plows also do not drive through that fast. The faster they move, the farther the lighter snow will get thrown.
I hated that in Southern Ontario, just finish shoveling your end of the driveway, then along comes the snowplows to fill it back in with snow, Ice and wet slush from the salt melted roads. And if you have a vehicle parked on side of road GL getting out.

Alpine lakes are incredibly clear... They're so cold that there is no bacterial action in the lake ... Even in summer you can canoe out to the middle of a deep lake, and see all they way to the bottom... But the water is very very cold...

You try another door (the other side might not be AS frozen. I find it depends on how the weather went, and which direction it came down from can effect which doors are frozen. Unless it rained first. . .then probably everything is frozen) and heat the car up from the inside. Or stay home and wait for the car to thaw. Some might try the hairdryer trick. But essentially, once it thaws the car is fine again.
One of the reasons for schools staying open in the north is for safety. If kids show up, they can get in. Otherwise they walk home and their parents might be at work. Once I tried to keep my daughter home (she was 6) when it was well below -40C and she begged to go. Finally I sent her . She was so happy. When we moved south and people talked about "snow days" I had no idea what that meant!

It's very rare for schools anywhere in Canada to close due to the cold. There are "snow day" closures if there's a big dump of snow that makes driving difficult, especially for the buses. Also, that tornado thing is often called a "dust devil" and looks worse than it is. The spiralling winds pick up the dirt from the ground and suck it skyward.
In Manitoba, my kids may never have had a 'snow day' that I remember. They had 'cold days' because buses couldn't start and it wasn't safe to go out of doors for five minutes. That was when I found out that the water in my eyes could freeze - I reached up to remove my glasses because the lenses had fogged up only to realize that I had left my glasses inside. I quit shoveling and just went back in.

There's a secret to shoveling your driveway... Facing the road, clear out a truck size section to your left... Then do your driveway... When the plow goes by... The snow will mostly dump into your truck size cleared section... Leaving little to no snow being plowed onto your driveway...
Sort of true? Although it buys you one "free shovel", you ARE still removing more snow to do it in the first place. One thing for sure, better to shovel your snow across the driveway in the direction of the plow at least.

For reference, -40 and -50 are "You will have frostbite with more than 5 minutes of exposure". We actually get -40C here. Balaklava, 2 coats, one with hood, double gloves. That was just my walk 2 blocks.
'Some' plow drivers, if they see you, may lift their blade so as not to throw snow back onto your driveway...but it also really depends on the amount of snow they are having to move...and on how close other driveways are to yours (because if they are within a few feet of each other, then who do they lift for? And how many? Before it becomes as if they aren't plowing the streets.) Highway plows on the other hand just cut the snowbanks back no matter what, because their jobs affect the safety of more than a couple people on a city/town street.

The salt that's put on the roads when it snows, gets onto the cars and moose love salt. That's why it's not unusual to see a moose lick a car. In fact a lot of moose come onto the highways in the winter to lick the roads. This is definitely a hazard, especially at night when you can't see them that well.

I live in Ontario but had a heart attack in Calgary. The hospital staff were so amazing. I had triple bypass surgery and hospitalized for 6 weeks and it didn't cost us a nickel (pennies don't exist anymore) except for the hostel suite we had to rent but in the US, it would cost around a half million dollars

A peace of advice if you come to Canada in the winter never stick your tongue on a steal post. I did that when I was a kid in grade 4 and it hurts like hell and bleeds we’ll don’t let anyone trick you into that doing that . I learnt this lesson the hard way 😅
We are lucky where I live. The grader goes past my driveway and pushes four feet of snow into my driveway, then he backs up and clears the snow from the entrance to my driveway.
Where I live, we use teams of plows to clear residential streets. First, graders push the snow off the roads and scrape the ice away. Then front end loaders clear snow from fire hydrants and bus stops, and get rid of the windrows at intersections. The front end loaders also clear windrows from peoples' driveways, which is well appreciated! On major streets, the snow is pushed into windrows and thrown by giant snow blowers into semi-trailer dump trucks, then taken to a snow dump. Behind the snow blower there's an almost endless line of dump trucks waiting their turn to be filled. It's all very well organized and coordinated.

I used to see dust devils all the time. My primary school was built in a way that would make these dust devils spawn. They were always tiny and a bunch of fun to watch. That big one in the video, that is the biggest I've ever seen... I wouldn't be close to that one.
The sidewalk covered in ice is everywhere in Canada except Vancouver. I don't have a car and live in Québec City where there are so many hills. I attempted to make a video at some point where I was trying to find a solution, either with crampons, "claques" etc. It's not uncommon to start sliding down a hill and not be able to stop... either on your feet or ass. Very dangerous to break legs or arms, especially for elderly people.
The man sliding is holding an ice breaker or ice pick or ice chopper or ice scraper ... whatever term you want to use, but it is made to break off thick ice in your driveway, sidewalks, or even in some cases, ice fishing. Yes, that snowplow has to be waiting around the corner watching you shovel your tush off and when you're done, they do pass by creating a huge snowbank at the end of your driveway (and it's usually hard to shovel too as it has become hard packed). One reason why when we shovel, we make sure that the snow is also shoveled far left, so when the snowplow passes, it has less snow to push. But we're used to it in Northeastern Ontario.

Yes, we get tornadoes here although not so many as in the US. Ice is easier to walk on when one has grippers with rubber and metal points on the shoes(think studded snow tires). -50C is -58 F. -40 same, and there are 18 degrees F per 10C.

This has been one of the warmest, easiest winter of the last 40 years in Quebec at the very least… I had to shovel twice in the entire year because each time it snows, the next day it’s warm enough to melt..!

the Moose licking the car is because our road is salted/gravel during winter. if people allow them to licking it they wouldn't be afraid of vehicles and can cause problems.

I have winter boots that have a cleat in the sole of the boot that you just flip over so the pick part that sticks into the ice when you walk it helps you to navigate without sliding or falling. Also at -25 or 26 even once you dig your car out, you have to warm your keys so you can get the door open, then when you try to turn the car on it usually won't start because it's too cold, if you have a good battery and it does turn on you can't go anywhere because all the mechanics are frozen in the car all the metal parts the wheels, so you have to leave the car and even though the car says it's warm, the metal parts of the car are still frozen solid and they won't move, when they do begin to warm up enough that you can move, the creek and squeak and squawk, and once saved warmed up enough that they stop doing that between that time, you are praying that the bars that run under the car for the wheels etc are not going to break because they're so brittle from the cold Now you go back inside because you're soaking wet from shoveling the snow and everything and you get changed and you come back out in the snow plow came down the road and buried your car again. It's really fun .b😂 😂lol😂 And you usually get a boot 2 weeks of weather like at -25 - 26 and it's bitter because of the dampness . Their normal weather is snow piled high enough that if you're on the second floor of your house you cannot see the roof of the house across the street. 😅 Find eh?!
Please do a video on The Yukon. It's absolutely beautiful with diverse weather and fantastic people. It's very remote, but the bigger cities and towns have everything. As you explore the Territory, the scenery is constantly changing. Midnight sun in the summer ☀️ and can reach +35C. Northern Lights in the winter, with little day light and can, but not always get as cold as -50C. I lived there for 17 years. My favourite place in Canada 🇨🇦.

Hey, New-Brunswick here! Our winter has been very mild overall this year (by our standards anyway! 😅). Last week though, at least in my parts, we had two big snowstorms only one day apart from each other. We got hit with the first one, had the next day mostly sunny, then the day after we got hit again by an even bigger one! Each of them around 40cm of snow. 😂😂😂 Apparently winter decided last minute that no, it was not in fact done with us, here's some more snow to shovel. Spring will just have to wait its turn. ❄🌨🌨❄😭 About the icy sidewalks, I remember a few years ago during winter we had freezing rain and very low temperatures for 3 or 4 days in a row. The roads were a nightmare, and the sidewalks/driveways/parking lots were so iced over, it was like the whole town was a giant ice rink. Just walking from your door to the car was a freakin extreme sport - and there was a good chance your car doors would be frozen shut! There was this thick layer of ice covering everything, cars and roofs and stairs etc... The tree branches were all broken from the weigh of the ice covering them. Same thing with the power lines, there were many power outages. I remember trying to walk to the grocery store - I lived very close to it back then - and giving up not even halfway through because I couldn't take two steps without slipping and nearly falling! I then thought of the parking lot of the store, a slightly inclined hill also covered in ice, and I just turned around and went back home! 🤣 Ah, the Canadian winters... They can be rough sometimes, but they do make interesting stories! And funny memes! 😉😁☃
The fact that Canada is huge is very evident in this video. I'm from Alberta. We are praying to the Snow Gods. Haha! Our fields are almost bare. No melting seasonal snowfall means no moisture, which can mean poor crops(unless it's a wet spring). That can lead to having to buy feed all next winter. One horse will consume one large round bail a month in winter. If you have even a small herd, it could cost thousands of dollars.

I slipped on ice, and the next thing I knew, my neighbor was pulling me out from under my parked car! I seriously injured my tailbone, lower back, neck, and shoulder. That ice is very dangerous. You gotta walk like a penguin to safely get across.

The frozen door --- yep, ive woken to a frozen door many times. Learned to keep my outdoor light on overnight to help keep that from happening. When ya gotta take a hair dryer or heat torch to get out your door, you learn how ro work around it

You try another door (the other side might not be AS frozen. I find it depends on how the weather went, and which direction it came down from can effect which doors are frozen. Unless it rained first. . .then probably everything is frozen) and heat the car up from the inside. Or stay home and wait for the car to thaw. Some might try the hairdryer trick. But essentially, once it thaws the car is fine again.
I have used lock de-icer, that I keep in my purse not my car, to get the door open when it froze shut.

One of the reasons for schools staying open in the north is for safety. If kids show up, they can get in. Otherwise they walk home and their parents might be at work. Once I tried to keep my daughter home (she was 6) when it was well below -40C and she begged to go. Finally I sent her . She was so happy. When we moved south and people talked about "snow days" I had no idea what that meant!
There is generally a staff member, often the principal, who has to go in anyway in case a student shows up. At least in my district.
I spent two weeks in hospital for cancer surgery and my only expense was when I felt better and went downstairs to Timmy's for a donut.

It's very rare for schools anywhere in Canada to close due to the cold. There are "snow day" closures if there's a big dump of snow that makes driving difficult, especially for the buses. Also, that tornado thing is often called a "dust devil" and looks worse than it is. The spiralling winds pick up the dirt from the ground and suck it skyward.

In Manitoba, my kids may never have had a 'snow day' that I remember. They had 'cold days' because buses couldn't start and it wasn't safe to go out of doors for five minutes. That was when I found out that the water in my eyes could freeze - I reached up to remove my glasses because the lenses had fogged up only to realize that I had left my glasses inside. I quit shoveling and just went back in.

Wouldn't work in Calgary but could be weeks later for side roads. Usually they just wait for a chinook to melt it off. Main roads get cleared quicky.
Shoveling all the snow off the car is usually only the first step. There's often ice to scrape off too.
Followed by shaking the snow and scraper-powdered ice off your jacket, followed by a Timmy's.

tyler: big oil bought up electric trolleys many decades ago to kill them, many cities had electric trolleys. a few places like Toronto managed to keep them and that is a new version.
some places now also have LRTs. my hometown had electric trolleys till roughly the 50s-60s maybe, now has LRT light rail transit which runs along streets, and on old rail lines ( electric). they look like these ones, Toronto kept them red like their classic street cars, other cities have them other colours.

For reference, -40 and -50 are "You will have frostbite with more than 5 minutes of exposure". We actually get -40C here. Balaklava, 2 coats, one with hood, double gloves. That was just my walk 2 blocks.
'Some' plow drivers, if they see you, may lift their blade so as not to throw snow back onto your driveway...but it also really depends on the amount of snow they are having to move...and on how close other driveways are to yours (because if they are within a few feet of each other, then who do they lift for?

The salt that's put on the roads when it snows, gets onto the cars and moose love salt. That's why it's not unusual to see a moose lick a car. In fact a lot of moose come onto the highways in the winter to lick the roads. This is definitely a hazard, especially at night when you can't see them that well.

I live in Ontario but had a heart attack in Calgary. The hospital staff were so amazing. A peace of advice if you come to Canada in the winter never stick your tongue on a steal post. I did that when I was a kid in grade 4 and it hurts like hell and bleeds we’ll don’t let anyone trick you into that doing that . I learnt this lesson the hard way 😅
We are lucky where I live. The grader goes past my driveway and pushes four feet of snow into my driveway, then he backs up and clears the snow from the entrance to my driveway.
Where I live, we use teams of plows to clear residential streets. First, graders push the snow off the roads and scrape the ice away. Then front end loaders clear snow from fire hydrants and bus stops, and get rid of the windrows at intersections. The front end loaders also clear windrows from peoples' driveways, which is well appreciated!
On major streets, the snow is pushed into windrows and thrown by giant snow blowers into semi-trailer dump trucks, then taken to a snow dump. Behind the snow blower there's an almost endless line of dump trucks waiting their turn to be filled. It's all very well organized and coordinated.

The difference between a Dust Devil and a tornado is how they're created and the power. Tornadoes start from the clouds and work their way down. Dust Devil's start from the ground and work their way up and are usually pretty harmless, even to the point where some people play in them.

I used to see dust devils all the time. My primary school was built in a way that would make these dust devils spawn. They were always tiny and a bunch of fun to watch. That big one in the video, that is the biggest I've ever seen... I wouldn't be close to that one.

The sidewalk covered in ice is everywhere in Canada except Vancouver. I don't have a car and live in Québec City where there are so many hills. I attempted to make a video at some point where I was trying to find a solution, either with crampons, "claques" etc. It's not uncommon to start sliding down a hill and not be able to stop... either on your feet or ass. Very dangerous to break legs or arms, especially for elderly people.

In Montreal I have seen this one snowfall overnight so bad that my car was literally buried with about 2 ft on the roof of the car .
The man sliding is holding an ice breaker or ice pick or ice chopper or ice scraper ... whatever term you want to use, but it is made to break off thick ice in your driveway, sidewalks, or even in some cases, ice fishing. Yes, that snowplow has to be waiting around the corner watching you shovel your tush off and when you're done, they do pass by creating a huge snowbank at the end of your driveway (and it's usually hard to shovel too as it has become hard packed). One reason why when we shovel, we make sure that the snow is also shoveled far left, so when the snowplow passes, it has less snow to push. But we're used to it in Northeastern Ontario.

This has been one of the warmest, easiest winter of the last 40 years in Quebec at the very least… I had to shovel twice in the entire year because each time it snows, the next day it’s warm enough to melt..!

the Moose licking the car is because our road is salted/gravel during winter. if people allow them to licking it they wouldn't be afraid of vehicles and can cause problems.

I have winter boots that have a cleat in the sole of the boot that you just flip over so the pick part that sticks into the ice when you walk it helps you to navigate without sliding or falling.
Also at -25 or 26 even once you dig your car out, you have to warm your keys so you can get the door open, then when you try to turn the car on it usually won't start because it's too cold, if you have a good battery and it does turn on you can't go anywhere because all the mechanics are frozen in the car all the metal parts the wheels, so you have to leave the car and even though the car says it's warm, the metal parts of the car are still frozen solid and they won't move, when they do begin to warm up enough that you can move, the creek and squeak and squawk, and once saved warmed up enough that they stop doing that between that time, you are praying that the bars that run under the car for the wheels etc are not going to break because they're so brittle from the cold
Now you go back inside because you're soaking wet from shoveling the snow and everything and you get changed and you come back out in the snow plow came down the road and buried your car again. It's really fun .b😂

Please do a video on The Yukon. It's absolutely beautiful with diverse weather and fantastic people. It's very remote, but the bigger cities and towns have everything. As you explore the Territory, the scenery is constantly changing. Midnight sun in the summer ☀️ and can reach +35C. Northern Lights in the winter, with little day light and can, but not always get as cold as -50C. I lived there for 17 years. My favourite place in Canada 🇨🇦.

Our winter has been very mild overall this year (by our standards anyway! 😅). Last week though, at least in my parts, we had two big snowstorms only one day apart from each other. We got hit with the first one, had the next day mostly sunny, then the day after we got hit again by an even bigger one! Each of them around 40cm of snow. 😂😂😂 Apparently winter decided last minute that no, it was not in fact done with us, here's some more snow to shovel. Spring will just have to wait its turn. ❄🌨🌨❄😭
About the icy sidewalks, I remember a few years ago during winter we had freezing rain and very low temperatures for 3 or 4 days in a row. The roads were a nightmare, and the sidewalks/driveways/parking lots were so iced over, it was like the whole town was a giant ice rink. Just walking from your door to the car was a freakin extreme sport - and there was a good chance your car doors would be frozen shut! There was this thick layer of ice covering everything, cars and roofs and stairs etc... The tree branches were all broken from the weigh of the ice covering them. Same thing with the power lines, there were many power outages. I remember trying to walk to the grocery store - I lived very close to it back then - and giving up not even halfway through because I couldn't take two steps without slipping and nearly falling! I then thought of the parking lot of the store, a slightly inclined hill also covered in ice, and I just turned around and went back home! 🤣

The fact that Canada is huge is very evident in this video. I'm from Alberta. We are praying to the Snow Gods. Haha! Our fields are almost bare. No melting seasonal snowfall means no moisture, which can mean poor crops(unless it's a wet spring). That can lead to having to buy feed all next winter. One horse will consume one large round bail a month in winter. If you have even a small herd, it could cost thousands of dollars.
Same in NB this year. Almost no snow cover. I expect a drought unless we get a bunch of spring rain

For those of us with rare conditions, the public health system has little to no ability to accommodate and, even if they could, many services are simply unavailable. You comfort yourself with your uncorrelated statistic on "life expectancy" - feel proud that you support a system that provides "some kind" of health care to (and use your best Trudeau voice now) "All Canadians" while those of us who need special care can't even purchase it and have to suffer due to your ignorance. My little brother licked the car bc he was convinced it was plastic, and he was stuck a good 15-20 minutes while we panicked, then boiled some water. He came free eventually, but not a week later he got stuck to something else bc he thought it was wood. (He was like 5, so brilliance was not in the books just yet)

The frozen door --- yep, ive woken to a frozen door many times. Learned to keep my outdoor light on overnight to help keep that from happening. When ya gotta take a hair dryer or heat torch to get out your door, you learn how ro work around it

The most satisfying thing about clearing the snow off your car is when you have that foot or two of snow on it and you take the first swipe with the shovel in just the right spot and all the snow falls off your car at once with that one swipe
I've had 4 kids and one emergency surgery for and exploded Fallopian tube because of an ectopic pregnancy, total cost: 10-12$ each for parking. And maybe 10-20$ for a few midnight snacks from the vending machine.
