I hate the cliche but wow, David is such a national treasure. I remember his early movies blowing me away, really digging it's surreal horror hooks in me.
@@ruling528 you just don't watch enough good movies to understand that. But then again, you are probably one of those A24 looneys that think they discovered art.
In my top 3 film makers (along with Lynch & Carpenter), but I will say that 3 films I find hard to get into are Fast Company, M. Butterfly & Cosmopolis. None are what I'd call boring however. There are audiences who will find their subject matter as interesting as their film maker clearly did. I am not among them, but at the same time I applaud David for standing behind them as films he's proud of!
How dare you ask: “Were any moments that you were insecure?” The man has made a whole disturbing body of work that defined the medium, he knows he is a Giant, a Titan of uncompromised proportions and ideals, he is what every true filmmaker should aspire to, you must have a forceful impregnable conviction to build a career like that…
I'm not a fan of Cronenberg, however I grew up watching some of his movies and if I could appreciate one in particular, it would be "Map to the stars" as it was the first time a Rob Pattinson's performance caught my attention. Then, I saw him in The Lighthouse, Good Time in which he looks actually like he's on dr*ugs, frankly he's the new Daniel Day-Lewis of these times. As a result, he earned everyone's respect with his "The Batman's" role.
I'm glad Cronenberg got to make this film but when he said I might have to stop making movies and right another novel I was like Yes please because I really liked his novel Consumed :)
I wish The Dead Zone, The Fly (remake), A History Of Violence, The Brood, Videodrome & Crash goes to aired on TCM next October in The Best of David Cronenberg.
Cronenberg is an intellectual - all his films are based on solid ideas that came from reality, science and the human condition. He's an artist because his films cause a reaction, even if that reaction is revulsion. The aim if the director is to move the audience, to transmute them from before to after the film, Cronenberg achieves this with every film and whatever his budget. This makes him a cinematic visionary up there with any of his peers.
Try to appreciate how the interviewer switches his point of view from calling Cronenberg a sicko at the starting line and then flawlessly invokes the director's name recognition less than five minutes later/? Appreciate how interviewers can loudly contradict themselves but for the person actually creating something beyond contorting their voice into a soft pillow for their egos. They're not *all* like that, mind you, some actually have a depth of nuance greater than a waterbottle cap.
when you're ten and eleven years old THEY CAME FROM WITHIN, RABID, and THE BROOD each had Sllloww beginnings! It took about 40 minutes for stuff to clearly get going.
I did in the end see crimes of the future. It did show the climate change element. I just think though that they'll start genetically engineering other plant and animal life along with us. Coming up with a deranged planet. Still a big fan though... Your stuff is really hard to digest. But once you do, you're better off for it. It's the whole Marshall McLuhan thing, 'the medium is the message.'

climate change is real. but it's effects are not as catastrophic as they say it is. it's just that they have the capabilities to report on a much larger scale. i am actually a toronto blue jays fan.
history keeps on repeating. we actually breed at this rate. our population used to be kept in check by mosquitos and diseases. but we just keep on over-populating. the price of luxury i think.
god though... you're an atheist. it says so. but look. we all live a tortured existence. we do have moments of release. the patterns of genetics and biological determinism do work to people's benefit. luck is a factor. and people don't understand how lucky it is to be someone else. no-one understands the experience of being someone else. we're just fated to be the person we are.
Maps to the Stars, A Dangerous Method and Crimes of The Future (2022) were very boring. I think his last movie with real aura was Crash, the next movies like A History of Violence and Eastern Promises were just fine.
I used to get Cronenberg and Lynch confused lol. I'm far from the only one. They both make weird, disturbing, bizarre, violent, trippy films, they reuse the same actors, they use each other's actors, they are both actors _themselves,_ they are the same age, and they look similar. Yeah. It's not rocket science hahaha
I would however argue that Crimes of the future ranks as one of Cronenbergs least interesting films, desptie how provocative the movie sets out to be. The dead zone and The fly is still unmatched.

David Cronenberg is sensational for an adult mind with some sort of experience. Take his fascination with other agents such as Clive Barker.

Dead Ringers? Eastern Promises?

Awful questions and attitude from the interviewer. Seems like he's barely knowledgeable about Cronenberg's work or experimental cinema in general.
He might as well have asked David Lynch if he'd consider making a Star Wars movie. (Right as I typed this, he asked that question! I swear! lol)
