- In a CNBC exclusive, San Francisco's new Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie sits down with Kate Rogers to talk about bringing remote workers back, making the city safer and diversifying business beyond tech.
Thank you! "San Francisco is not a city you come to to do drugs, deal drugs or sleep on our street". THANK YOU! Common sense.
Wait until they closed off Great Highway! You will see more drug crime and lose more people coming into the city to do business, just like Market street.
@@joannsmith3589 yes many drug dealers on street right now at 9:45 pm on Hyde between Geary and Post Street!
Actually San Francisco has been a city you come to deal drugs do drugs and sleep on our streets for the last 50 years lol.......
I've been here since 1983. And it's been exactly this way.
What world are you living in. Stop voting Democrat for a few voting cycles so we can get our city back on track What do you say about that
Revolutionary thinking!
Make San Francisco Great Again!
Lets make San Francisco a world class city again
SF is the same since the mission Dolores was established. Just need the conservatives to stop being scared and man up
@@MarcoBonechinobody wants to live in a shithole city-which SF has become, but does not have to be.

"You don't wake up this morning to think I'm a progressive/centrist/conservative... " Really well said, mayor. It's about common sense
I wish him good luck and hope he hires competent people to help him...its a humungous task ahead but doable. Set the standard and "they will come".
and if they don't help him, they get fired immediately.
It was great to hear Lurie talking about DIVERSIFYING the businesses he wants to attract in the downtown and the City at large. He's clearly learned from the City's previous mistakes of placing all their chips on one industry. Last time around, that didn't bode well for SF and we're still seeing the hangover. Bravo.
The pandemic had a lot to do with the industry downturn. Otherwise, it was a hustle and bustle, busy, active City.
@@juansantamaria7476a lot of the box stores were facing difficulty competing with online retailers even before Covid but once everyone got a taste of home delivery, the stores didn’t have a chance. I wonder if new retail stores might develop a mix of the positives of online shopping and the immediacy of going to a brick and mortar store. How about a service where the stores packs and sends out for delivery the items you pick out and buy in the store so that it gets delivered after you get home without having to drive in traffic or worry about parking and break ins.
@@juansantamaria7476yes, but the tech monoculture is harmful for many other reasons: no active restaurant scene, nightlife, or people going out to cultural events.

Tech is the biggest reason why our prices have gone up so much.
I love San Francisco. Being born and raised in the Bay Area with a father who would always tell me how privileged and lucky we were to be living so close to such a fantastic city during my childhood, watching SF devolve post-pandemic has really hurt. Hopefully The City can get back on track because it is truly one of a kind and a fantastic place when not over ran by lunatics and mentally ill fent addicts.
We want zero tolerance on shoplifting, car burglary, assaults and etc.
I believe it when I see it.
Such a pessimist!

Every politician in SF comes in talking about removing tents. I don't doubt the Mayor wants to do it. But they've never made it past the activists and lawsuits. He has no serious plan for that. You'd have to have 1,000 cops clearing 100 tents every night to remove them faster than they are set up. Even if you have a Chief of Police an DA that supports it, Judges will take the cops pensions away.
You won't. Money talks. SF is in a budget hole.
@@ktime2037it will be interesting to see a wealthy heir to a fortune have to deal with a budget deficit. Good luck Mr mayor.
Mr. Lurie, I request that you immediately take a walk around Tenderloin, specifically Hyde, Larkin, Ellis, Geary, and Post Street. What you will witness is an appalling sight of drug users openly consuming during the day, with innocent children in close proximity.
They are sprawled out on the ground, leaving you to question whether they are breathing or lifeless.
he actually mentioned how he was walking on the street and couldnt explain to his daughter what they were seeing. i dont think he needs to see any more he knows already how bad it is
Every morning they clean, water blasted the front of SFO city hall and you can't just Gas up your Car because some homeless are just around the corner waiting for their turn to get close to you and ask for Money.
Tell the Cops to get off their butt and arrest those people
And a judge needs to put them in jail!
And take that same walk every month so you can see if and what is changing.
As a San Franciscan, I am actually filled with optimism about the city’s future. I believe the newly elected mayor is adopting a thoughtful and attentive approach, unlike the previous administration.
THIS IS AGAINST BLM OH MY GOD!!!!
Lurie says a lot of the right stuff. Great to hear some common sense on homelessness, drugs, crime, and diversifying beyond tech! But talk is cheap and he's still untested when it comes to SF politics. I'll sit back and wait before popping the champagne. Hoping he can deliver real results! 🍾🤞
Every Mayor elect says the same exact thing! Don't they?
@@talldave7799cal mayors and governors had their hands tied for years due to the court ruling that prevented the removal of tents if no shelter beds were available.
@talldave7799 Yes, exactly!
Exactly- talk is cheap and every mayor says the same thing. Let’s see if he actually does something or just succumbs to the forces that deliberately destroyed San Francisco in the first place.
@@talldave7799 Did the last Mayor-elect promise to eliminate tents and open drug use from the streets? This is different.
A breath of fresh air! So nice to hear a calm, collected and competent person talking about SF’s challenges and solutions.
Is London Breed not calm, collected and competent? I think she invoked the same sort of policies and actually bolstered police.
Thank god we have this man

Everything he is was just excellent. It brought so much joy to me. It won’t be easy but it’s doable. And if anyone can do it it’s him.
San Francisco also needs to attract more diversity. I've been here all my life and I tell people that this place is not as diverse as it may seem. Please don't just attract enterprises, but attract families attract people from all sorts of background. It was more diverse in the '80s and '90s. Bring everyone back. Attract them back. I visited Detroit. I visited Atlanta because I used to live there, not 1/10 was set up in their downtowns. Although I no longer live in the city of San Francisco, but I live extremely close to it. I go to the city almost everyday. I'm counting on this man to fix this place. I'm counting on him to bring the glory back.
It’s a blessing. Our company moving back to SF from Oakland next year.

Mayor Lurie, thanks for your warm speech. Make San Francisco clean and great again. I love you so much.
When I moved to San Francisco in 1972 it was the cleanest city I've ever seen. And the most beautiful in the world.
I hope to see it that eay again 🌺

I like some of the policies overall but enforcing RTO is not logical until we address the housing crisis not just in SF but the surrounding cities. Many families have left the city not just because of crime / drugs but also affordability. Only CEOs can afford to live in the city
sf is a beautiful city. i hope they fixed all the issues with crime, open drug use, people dying on the street, high taxes, high rent, feces, garbage, conflict of interest, billions of dollar spent but nothing to show for except the weight of the ex mayor, companies leaving meaning money.
Former Facebook worker and here, the reason why tech workers didn't help was because they didn't invest in the community because ee were offered all inclusive packages where we didn't need to leave the property. Everything was provided for us at work. No one was putting money back into the community. Take it away and make them get food at local places and things will change
the community has to be safe for that to work though.
Yeah, and pay enough to be able to afford $20 lunches
When they can drive from their protected garage at work
to their protected garage at home they are insulated from reality.
it was basically a parasitic relationship and the worst of both worlds. Because while tehcbros didn't contribute to the local economy, they got tax cuts, rebates, and actually did direclty compete with locals for housing and rent.
@@smks8erit was profoundly safe for years BUT big tech (you people 😂) stayed on “”””campus”””” lol you stayed at work and would not mingle with locals.
Godspeed Mayor. May you defeat the ultra left wing crazies.
Those people are still everywhere
Speaking as a former ultra-leftwing crazy, I can tell you that the Pandemic and failed leadership of Breed/Gavin Nudesom has radicalized much of this state and city.
We’re not full-on MAGA, but we see how the pendulum swung way too far in one direction.
agree with most of his points, except the returning to office one. It's a very unpopular position for employees
If he’s afraid of public criticism, nothing will change. He needs to be tougher on crimes in order to make SF safer. The primary issue is safety, he knows it and everyone knows it.
Seriously how the hell can people get away with shoplifting
He is from the Levi Strauss family. That is an old SF family.
Breath of fresh air! Kudos to SF and Daniel Lurie
I have a feeling people who don't return to the office will be looked at with a magnifying glass and replaced with people who are willing to go in to the office.
Last time I was there with my friends we park our van across Ghirardelli’s , after we came back , man our van’s rear window was smashed and stuffs were stolen . It’s just big turn off and like a trauma . I love a lot of things in downtown SF and the surroundings . I hope the good mayor will have the political will and power to do the right thing .
Make San Francisco great again
True in the case of SF.
Fat chance of that happening, he is still a Dumbycrat.
Well Trump and Fox News will likely be watching closely and I’m hopeful that if things start getting better in San Francisco they will likely send positive feedback. Only time will tell.
I sincerely hope Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie will change San Francisco for the better. I like what he is saying. Let see how its delivered, when and how.
She was trying to bait him... and he replied with so tactfully. Awesome.
People coming back to the office will mean more traffic with no more transit resources.
Oh please, most people leave in SF, that's why BART exists! And please try to think larger than your little bubble!
bart?
believe it or not, our transit is one of the best in the usa. it is not nyc of course. if anything we need more transit incentives to get people to take it. Bart is so underutilized
Excellent!! I like the ticket idea. Too many other states have dumped their troubled people into San Francisco.
There needs to be an ad campaign that goes national.
"Coming To San Francisco To Do illegal Drugs? We Will Harsh Your Mellow."
And back that up with ACTION. Make coming to SF to do drugs a HORRIBLE experience.
Centrist Democrat Mayor of SF. Love to see it.
We need a better Governor too.
Saying all the right things. Godspeed
Biden said all the right things before he was president. We all know how that ended up ...
I am a native San Franciscan rejected due to HCOL. So sad.
I’m so glad he unseated the prior mayor.
Clean the streets of San Franshitsco first!!!
Bravo! The interviewer asked many intelligent questions. How refreshing!
Why enforce RTO? Every time I drive on 101 I saw an accident by the roadside. Crazy tolls (and still increasing), bart and Caltrain prices.
Good luck retaining staff with forced RTO 😂
Yeh when layoffs hit let’s see how important RTO is for those who opposes it.
RTO is a necessity if downtown commercial office and retail (both pay a lot in taxes) stand any chance of survival.
Without RTO who will be buying $20 salads for lunch? And yes, powerful elite will make us submit to whatever if staying employed is the name of the game.
RTO forces these people to see the impact of their work.
Why RTO? Take money from the middle class? No thanks to 4hr commute a day.
Then find work else where. Better to hire SF residences to work for the SF administration anyway. There will not be a shortage of applications
I love San Francisco, you give me hope that I can come back and enjoy the city
Finally.... a Mayor who has a clue and seems like to have an idea and a plan.
It's gonna be a tough task for the new mayor but I hope and pray he can turn it around for this once great and prosperous city by the bay.🙏🙏🙏
It's pretty clear that CNBC doesn't know what it is supposed to be anymore. Does anyone remember when it used to be NBC's "business channel"?
Mayor Lee created the Twitter tax cut but failed to compel tech companies modify their employee perks. When your company, by design, has a private chef preparing free gourmet meals, with free beer and a rec room work environment, why would you go out and pay for dinner in a restaurant.
Nobody did. If we’re going to give tax cut to bring companies in, the company employees have to be incentivized to spread that investment in the community.
yes, the tech monoculture was largely a disaster. That much is true
Wishing you much success! Go SF!! 🙏💯💙
I’m hoping that Los Angeles can elect someone who brings common sense back to the City. We’re going to host the Olympics in 4 years and the City looks like crap.
Let’s begin with “offering” bus tickets back home. Sounds good to me.
who's paying for the tickets?
Is that really a serious question? 🤡
@@Wingmam21 who are you asking the question too?
Agreed!!
He needs to rescind that sanctuary city policy too. The bus ticket is not enough.
It's easy for this mayor to say he’ll be in office daily. If our wages are competitive, gas prices are sky-high, transportation is poor, and traffic congestion and toll bridges go up yearly! Telecommuting saves money for families with kids and is pollution-free! You want to make a change and start cutting city waste spending and overpaid city officials that are doing absolutely nothing! Not everyone works for tech!
Tbh I believe in this dude. It’s time . Get rid of Gavin newsome
Do us all a favor, rescind all SANCTUARY city laws.
Exactly
Over 10% of our GREAT work force is undocumented. if they get deported, the city's economy will collapse. That's a really STUPID idea
Right.
Trying to save legacy city structure by mandating return to offices is nonsense that only serves corporate realtors at the worker’s expense.
Finally someone with common-sense! God bless San Francisco!
We're all rooting for you and for us!
Good luck!! Now I have a little hope.
SF will try literally anything before they build a single unit of housing
This is the reality, need more housing.
@@christophcollier after looking him up looks like he is a pretty pro housing guy
Okay, but you also don’t just give housing to people who don’t even know how to care for themselves. Look what happened to the hotels that were forced by the government to let homeless people live in them. They were trashed to oblivion. I was even one of those crazy folks long before lockdown who even tried to take a homeless person into my home to help them, and they tried to claim squatters rights and they trashed my home. These folks need to be taught how to adult, before they are given homes.
I like his priorities of works to be done. Wish him best to keep his promises. People to have better life ahead.
Daniel Lurie sounds like the Democrats I was raised in San Francisco in the 1970's and 1980's, when "common sense" was the business of the day!
Where the Police didn't mess around with Law Breakers, arrested them, and getting them off the streets... and for years! None of this arrest and freed within 5hrs garbage!
I left my ❤ in SF, in the late 1980's, and they stomped and pee'd on it!
I remember being a tourist in San Francisco in 2015. Its one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to, as is California. However, the amount of homeless people even back then was something that struck me. I saw a business owner argue with a half naked homeless man next to Fisherman's Wharf, who had took a nap directly in front of her business.
It'd be nice if MUNI and BART lines were expanded and improved. They're already packed during rush hour as it is, a RTO for all of downtown would make commuting unbearable.
If you're asking people to come back, at least make it convenient for them to do so!
Let's see what happens when the new federal government comes in 2025. I think that's where the majority of the funding comes from to support urban transit systems. And the incoming team doesn't appear to be huge supporters of public transit. I hope I'm wrong.
🙏🏽This will be amazing!
Way to go Mr. Mayor!!
Don't forget rebuilding the industrial sector.
Based on this, I look forward to what's to come.
This guy is what we want from the party! Common sense!
I don't understand how a city with the wealthiest people in the world can't fix their homeless issue.

Did we elect our 1st trans mayor?
We want San Francisco to come back too but the reality is that the way we work has changed since COVID. Why pay for office rent when the work can be done anywhere?
ugh don’t force us to go back to the office!!!!
Yes, drug addicts are mandatory to belong to the treatment pads, not on the street. Don’t pay $600 per month to the homeless. This will attract more drug addicts.
Most homeless work full time. The issue is affordability. He didn't even mention that once. He's already a total failure.
OMG. He sounds amazing. I hope he will really do what he says, because it is very sad to see the city so beautiful became a trash hole filled with zombies. Good luck to him.
Make sure the shelters are safe as well

Im cautiously optimistic about Daniel and he was my first choice.
Fresh realistic leadership
RTO 5 days a week is stupid. SF Bay area is built on talent and innovation. The best workers have flex-ability to leave so this mandate will not bring back the best workers. 3 day a week RTO is much more feasible.

What's with the obsession over RTO? People can go into office if they want to already.
I'm tired of talking to people hearing their dogs barking, kids crying or they're checking out at Walmart. Working from Home is a scam.

I love San Francisco was sad to see what happened to it. Hoping that next time I visit San Francisco it will be amazing like it was. He sounds like he knows what to do.

Hell yeah. Hell frikin yeah. Bring back SF!!!!
Please make it beautiful again!
I wish him and others the strength they need to turn aroumd this once wonderful city.
He is expressing what every single San Franciscan feels and thinks. Even though we are known for progressive things - we don't wake up thinking we are progressives. We are just like every other American simply trying to live. The crime and homelessness has gotten out of control - and that's why we voted for change. Great interview. He represents what San Franciscans feel.
We need to improve vehicular traffic. We got a planning department that ruined the flow of traffic with the reduction of lanes. Barely anyone uses the dedicated bicycle lanes. No one will ride their bikes when crime is high, because they might lose their bicycles. Our traffic signals are based on time cycle and not on demand cycle, causing more pollution with cars waiting at red lights when there's no cross traffic.
Great questions and great answers. Looking forward to a San Francisco revival.
Can we have this guy in LA? They are removing the encampments almost every other week, and tents appear again less than a few days after
