  • I've FINALLY had time to play around with HDR formats on my SONY a7siii. Here are some shots from the beach at Southwold, whilst on holiday with family in Suffolk!
This is the first time I've tried using an HDR profile on this camera, so forgive the end result not being perfect. It was a chance for me to finally test the HLG profile and I am pleased to report it was a lot easier in post than I expected. I exposed everything in-camera to +1 stop and then applied minor level/ colour correction to footage using colour wheels and s-curves once I completed the rough cut. I created a custom canvas to get the 2.35 cinema aspect rather than adding bars to a 16:9 frame which is not really the correct way of creating a cinema scope aspect (as a former cinema projectionist I am fussy) resolution 3840 (native 4K) x 1634. See below for GREAT formats cheat sheet. I'm pleased with the results, and I am now considering shooting more upcoming content in HLG.
So many more of us now benefit from a HDR capable display, the screen tech is getting VERY exciting and now every device I own is HDR, so it's time I became more invested in creating in this picture profile. I love how HDR formats really bring shots to life and create a living window to the world, HDR changes how we connect to content and although it's new(ish!) and takes some getting used to when filming/post, I think the pay off is huge.

    WHERE HAVE I BEEN?!!
Apologies for not posting for so long, I have been working hard in my day job on the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in the Technology team as well as working on in-house film projects, all of which have been a great success. You don't just work a games, you live it, the project takes over your entire life in the final 6 months, so I've not been able to dedicate the level of time and attention to content production to hit the level of quality I am happy putting out to you.
I do have some vlogs in the can from this spring/summer which I am now editing as quick as possible, so I will get those up in the next few weeks as well as filming some new content now that I have time to!
SUBSCRIBE to see my upcoming films!
Thanks for watching and I'll catch you next time!
    JV xoxo
