I like writing it all down. I find that the internet is great for specific information but I tend to COLLECT information instead of absorbing it, if that makes sense. I end up saving the information for later so I can “ collect “ more. It’s a rabbit hole. Pencil and paper has never failed me so far.

I like to draw out my garden beds on paper too. First I make a list of everything I want to grow, then I try to squeeze it all into the spots I have open. 😆

This is so neat... I've never seen anyone take this approach to garden planning. (Yeah... I agree... I probably need to get out more!!! LOL) At any rate... my property doesn't easily lend itself to a more "structured" approach, but the principles you're communicating are definitely transferrable. Thanks so much!

I use a combo of technology and paper. The technology end is not an app. It's a document that I created for my area reminding what to do each month. Also, I created a spreadsheet with a list of plants and an annual calendar divided into half-month columns to record when plants were sown and when they were ready for harvest. This record helps me the next year to set times to sow again.

Sometimes, even though the soil tests the same in different spots and the light is the same, something will grow better in a certain spot versus another. There is this one spot in my front garden, same soil, same lighting, but it is the only place banana peppers do well. They don't just do well in that spot, they take off and produce like crazy. The only way to find that out was trial and error. I'm on year eight of gardening at the house where I built my first permanent garden and there is always something to improve.

Call me old fashioned, but I draw mine out every year as well. I date the sheet, put it in my blue garden binder. I also during this time rewalk my planting area as well as observe the sun coming up and down over the area from my upstair window (this way I get a good view of the garden and how the sun hits it) do to my neighbors tree sometimes hang over. Overall, I plan every year as if it where the first, and what can and can't be planted due to any hindrances such as trees and shadows.

Every year I lay things out before growing early Spring on paper, never ends up the same way by Summer LOL. Then there is whole factor of second or third succession seeds just go where there is space based on if right time of the season for particular variety of plant. Still good idea to lay out plans in writing to at least start the season. Always look back at past failures and successes is where I find the best way to learn for the next year.

I really like the style of this video to help visualize how to plan out a garden. As a beginner, I'm not at all familiar with what vegetables grow well next to each other or don't (besides what I've seen so far in your vids). I've been going through your videos trying to take in as much as I can but this definitely helps to see a few things mentioned that can be planted in the same beds. I think the bed layouts is what I'm most confused on still. It seems a lot of vegetables thrive better in their own beds, but if we don't need a whole 48 sq ft. amount of just that one vegetable it's good to see what other things can work in the same bed. I have the space to do some long beds like 8-12 ft but would definitely want to utilize the space with a few different foods if possible. I'm not sure if I've just not found the video that covers this yet.. but I'd be interested to see a video similar to this kind of garden mapping... but for beginners and giving maybe suggestions of foods which would work near to each other or in the same beds.. and what's definitely a no-no.

    • @wildxembers
      @wildxembers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

OK well I paused to write this and now I heard the ending but I still am thinking maybe even a little compatible veg vid would be helpful to complete beginners haha

The garden planner on farmers almanac is the best garden planer i have found if ur into using tech for planning, it implaments all the points MIgardener has done in this video as well as additional features, works really well if u have small space and need to maximize space used (not available on mobile/tablets yet) Q; how much walking space do you have for your beds? Im doing a garden from scratch and your spaceing seems to be perfect. And is the walkway down the middle larger than what u have inbetween beds?

Do you plan then put it down for a few days and come back to it, giving it a fresh look and making potential changes? I know I find that helpful. I keep my herbs in pots ... many over winter (especially if wind protected and against a heat retaining wall of the house) and then I can move them around as needed.

I diverted to an online garden planner last year. It was supposed to help me space my plants properly, know when to put them in the ground, and align things with the sun to get optimal light. What a huge waste of time, money, and my garden in general. I ended up doing things I knew better...just because i relied on this software. Like seriously, why would anyone plant peppers directly north of indeterminate tomatoes??? (The answer is because that person doesn't want to actually harvest peppers that year.) Back to paper this year!!

I to have been planning my 2021 garden year 2 for gardening. But before I can place even 1 plant in the garden I have to amend the soil as my tomatoes had np flavor to them. So I was listening to Dave the Good on 1 of his taste testing video and realized it is not my imagination that my tomatoes really had no flavor The store bought one were better. I know I'm wearing the hat of shame by producing such poor tomatoes. but in my defense this was my 1ft year of growing in my new raised beds. So if you could share you garden amendment process that would help me a lot.

Thank you for the layout video. Question Re: shadows and cattle panels. What will you be planting at the base of the panels, and are you concerned about the shadows that the cattle panels will cast on the beds to the north of them?

Hi Luke, this was very helpful. I'm in Zone 5 - your neighbor in Indiana. I plan to start seedlings this year. The only space I have is in a barn. Its heated to about 55 degrees. Should I get a little green house to put inside the barn and put my tomatoes and peppers in there on heat mats? Will that help increase the temperature for them in the greenhouse?
    Thank you,
    Lori

I’m sure I over looked it on the website but I didn’t find where to get a catalog if you offer one?

You get 20 tomato plants in a 10x4 bed?! That's amazing! I was worried about getting 8 in my 4x8 bed! So, I could get 10 in comfortable even with indeterminate tomato plants?

Why is putting tomatoes next to eachother a recipe for disaster?

What do you grow before you can get tomatoes and peppers in the ground? Or after you harvested the garlic?
