    I know normally once the FAA certs a plane that standard is accepted by other countries but I'm surprised you didn't mention the huge list of countries who have said they won't be accepting this FAA re-cert at face value and will instead be doing their own re-cert and recommendations on top of those on a country by country basis. This represents another HUGE step in getting these planes in the air since while there will be standard base upgrades there could be other changes deemed necessary that aren't part of the standard base which would take longer to implement since not being done at such large a scale.

      yeah the FAA really shot itself in the foot over the 737Max case, with the investigations after showing all kinds of shady backdoor deals. No other air regulator is going to forget this stain on their record anytime soon.
      I still remember the NPR program where they interviewed 4 Boeing quality assurance managers who were forced into retirement because they kept refusing to certify planes due to faulty construction (like when they found debris in the area where the electronics were kept), and Boeing simply got someone else to certify the plane while forcing those who raised alerts to stay silent. Yep. That's the kind of company Boeing has become. Yet the FAA allows Boeing to certify themselves...
      EDIT: as an engineer... seeing some Americans in this thread trying to defend this travesty is just utterly disgusting.

    Also don't forget: Boeing isn't done when the FAA is through with it.
    Most of the other major regulatory bodies around the world have stated quite clearly that, after the MAX disaster and the FAAs involvement in it, they would NOT just adopt their directives (as was the case in the past) and instead put the plane through their own recertification process. May not matter to the american carriers, with the 737 being a short-hauler, but they sold a lot of 'em to overseas' airlines, as well.

      It matters a fair bit to US Carriers because, as a previous video noted, one of the things they were hoping to use the MAX for was cross-Atlantic flights to smaller destinations. It's also worth noting that going across either ocean generally favors a route that goes over Canada who will need to complete their recert before the plane is allowed in their airspace

    I was in Hawaii years ago. During my stay there, the grounding of DC-10s was lifted. During check-in, for my return to the mainland, I asked what kind of plane we would be flying on. (I was very certain it would be a DC-10.) The agent's response was "a modern wide-body aircraft". I wasn't satisfied with that answer so I asked again. I received exactly the same answer, the second time. So I asked: Is it a DC-10? The agent's response: "Yes". There were several people in line that actually gasped. As far as I know, everyone hopped aboard, and obviously, we made it back just fine.

      That's what's likely to happen. There was the first (in service) deadly crash of the SSJ100 not long ago. After the crash, all the planes were grounded for a few weeks and then the grounding was lifted. I don't remember hearing about problems with passengers not wanting to fly on the planes, although, everyone on the russian interned, especially those who new nothing about aviation, decided that it was their duty to shit on the airplane's design.

    • @wsb906
      @wsb906 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @Temple of Ridicule First, I wasn't comparing today's 737Max situation to the DC-10. Just thought I'd relay my personal experience from 1979 as the planes returned to service. You don't understand the impact the Chicago crash had on the public's opinion of the DC-10. Even though the cause was improper maintenance procedures performed by AA. There were images of the plane heading for the ground, etc, playing across the papers and TVs, day after day. With 273 fatalities, it remains the deadliest aviation accident to have occurred in the United States.

      B B if this has nothing to do with the Boeing case, why bring it up? The way you worded this makes me think you believe this scenario is what will happen once this Boeing restriction is lifted. If that was not your intention, then this comment makes no sense in this video. If it was the intention then his answer is valid, people will try to avoid flying on this plane and in this day and age, that’s easy as hell.

    • @wsb906
      @wsb906 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@drazgul1 LOL I relayed my experience from 1979, after the grounding of a commercial passenger was lifted, is that so complicated? I doubt too many on here have experienced it. That is why I posted it. Have you had the experience? Do what you want with my recollections. I also relayed how the airline tried to hide what type of equipment we were going to be on. As well as the reaction of people behind me in line when the news was it's a DC-10.
      Nowhere did I state or suggest the DC-10's return to service will be exactly the same for the 737MAX. Nor do I believe it. I am very capable of stating exactly what I want to get across. I also understand the differences between today's access to information, as well as the situations involving the 737MAX vs the DC-10. Ofcourse, problem is it wouldn't have competitive fuel burn compared to the A320 neo or the range. Boeing should have developed a new narrow body, that had variants to match size of and range of existing 737s and that of 757-200. Essentially, a like for like competitor to the A319neo, A320neo, A321neo, A321neoLR and A321neoXLR.

      On top of that they purposefully went out of their way and targeted a far smaller company that has no government programs to support them like Boeing does. Making the government put a 300% terrif on their planes. Which now has led to them effectively selling off everything they have in order to pay for the debt.

    • @smokeyveras7235
      @smokeyveras7235 4 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      It was the pilots fault though. Boeing didn’t have to tell pilots about mcas for a reason. Because when or if MCAS takes In invalid data from an AoA, it would present itself as a runaway trim situation. Therefore you hit the stab trim cut out switches. This procedure has existed for 5 decades and never has required the pilots to know why or what was causing the uncommanded nose down or up, just that it is uncommanded, so you put the stab trim switches in the cut out position. End of story. The only way pilots could have failed this is by horrible training due to the airlines. Lion air? Horrible airline, they even bought the AoA sensor from someone who wasn’t even allowed to sell it and also miscalibrated the sensor by 21 degrees. Didn’t doom the aircraft though, Lion air was still required to test the sensor before installing it. It would have shown the miscalibration, but they didn’t. Instead they installed it anyway, lied about it, and after it crashed they used the same type of test that was completed on another 737, but older, and said it was for the accident aircraft. Investigators discovered this lie due to the dates just not adding up. Despite Lion air garbage safety record, literally destroying over 8 aircraft since they started in 1999, they haven’t changed a thing. They haven’t apologized. They haven’t committed to any safety changes. Nothing. Because of ignorant videos like this. Did anyone read the final report for JT610? It’s pilot error. And even after the first accident. Boeing highlighted the caution and reminded pilots and the airlines that this 5 decade old procedure does in fact exist still. Which airlines didn’t train their pilots around it? Ethiopian airlines. Pilot error on a far larger scale than jt610. Leaving throttles at full with control issues. They had no idea about the trim system in general. Or anything. Captain trying to engage auto pilot with a stick shaker activated and nose down inputs? Ya they were fucked as soon as those wheels left the ground. The fact that he even tried to engage auto pilot just says they have no clue what they’re doing. Unreliable airspeed is due to a faulty AoA. Auto pilot in just about any aircraft, requires at least two functional AoAs. The only thing that can cause this failure is a faulty AoA. Therefore it’s a no brainer that auto pilot won’t engage. But the captain tried anyways, 4 times to be exact. Followed by the first officer manually trimming in the wrong direction. Then one of the pilots re engaging the stab trim cut out switches which is exactly what boeing said NOT to do. They originally diagnosed the issue correctly. Completed one step which was the switch to the cut out position. Skipped every other step on the procedure though. Then they went against what the procedure says to do by re engaging the system. Why’d they re engage it? Because they couldn’t manually trim against the airspeed they were hitting. Why couldn’t they do that? Because they skipped steps on the procedure. Step #2 was too disengage auto throttles. The failure to do this allowed the aircraft to accelerate to and past VMO and eventually out of the flights envelope. They literally exceeded speeds beyond the airframes limit. They had no control at that point. Multiple different things were now working against them. All thanks to them incorrectly following the procedure. Incompetence. The closest those pilots should have been to a cockpit is a first class seat. Both accidents crews failed to complete a single step on either checklist for unreliable airspeed and runaway stabilizer. Then you have the crew before JT610. Who experienced the same failure. They completed the steps on the procedure. Without Boeing reminding them. They trimmed manually. And they landed safely. So if you really think this is 100% Boeing then you’re smoking crack. This is just about 90% pilots and 10% Boeing. Yet Boeing is taking all the heat. The airlines love it though. They’re now funneling money to investors that was originally meant for training. They can’t wait to see how much lower they can set the bar for safety now.

      Airplanes are not toasters...you actually have to have skill and training to operate them...and the company has to have qualified maintenance and parts...not to mention overall a culture of safety. so if you read the safety report facts you would understand what actually went on

      They also blamed the pilots for Lauda Air Flight 004, which was the first fatal crash involving the 767.
      They only relented when Niki Lauda himself offered to take Boeing execs up into the air and test the conditions that Boeing said should have been recoverable.

    • @francesconicoletti2547

      youbecha64 the plane was built on a culture of dumbing down the pilot. It’s reason for existing is that almost no further training would be needed to fly the plane. Boeing made the decision not to clean sheet a new plane in order to avoid pilot training issues. And yet once the pilot doesn’t get the training, the pilot is blamed for not being trained.

    • @johnnyboythepilot4098
      @johnnyboythepilot4098 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@francesconicoletti2547 The whole training thing isn't some loophole or "dumbing down of pilots" Boeing was exploiting. Literally *every* aircraft family all share a common certificate/type-rating that allows pilots to transition between models/generations in the family without any training at all. The A320/A320neo, E-Jet/E-Jet-E2, 757/767, A330/A330neo/A340/A350, 747-400/747-8, CRJ200/CRJ700 and other families all share this same exact feature as the 737 Classic/737NG/737 MAX of not requiring simulator pilot training when transitioning between the types. This is because these aircraft families either have common cockpits and/or similar handling characteristics, which enable them to share the same certificate & common type-rating. If an aircraft doesn't have the same cockpit layout or handling characteristics, it can't remain on the previous generation aircraft's ticket, and needs to be certified as it's own plane with it's own type-ratings and would require weeks-long simulator training and courses before the pilots can fly that plane. This is why MCAS was developed because the 737 MAX without any computer-augmentation in the controls had different stall & handling characteristics as well as different yoke control-pressures compared to the 737NG or 737 Classic.

    • @blewis42002
      @blewis42002 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The MCAS could’ve been disabled with checklists that have existed since the 60’s, so in a sense it is the pilots fault.

Airlines got way too greedy, and Boeing in turn was weak by giving into the pressure. "only" 346 people paid for that - but I guess that is nothing compared to cancelling flights for a few months while retraining pilots.....however in the end, they may lose it all and they deserve to for putting money before people. You could just have easily have been killed in a MAX crash due to their disregard for safety. Think about that. After the MAX was grounded when they decided to fly some of them to storage multiple pilots in different 737 MAX’S had issues with the new software and said that the planes were still fighting with them because the plane still believes it’s going into a stall. I will say the only way this plane will ever be able to commercially fly again will be to deliver cargo other than that the planes design was a failure from the start because the Engines are to far forward on the plane causing the weight to be uneven which is why the plane keeps thinking it’s going into a stall. So unless they redesign THE WHOLE PLANE the 737 will pretty much be useless And only be worth scrap.

    Funny how no one speaks about accountability regarding the 2 plane crashes that killed hundreds of people.

      I trust that Boeing can fix it. They did it with rudder hardover in the early 90s.

      Read the preliminary crash report. It reads like the pilots followed procedure (page 11 05:40:35 and 32/33) and disabled the stab trim isolating the problem but then it reads like the first officer went against procedure and switched it back on causing the crash (page 12 05:43:11).
      The first officer 361 flying hours experience total 207 of which was in the past 90 days.
      This is the preliminary report, not the final report but it reads like pilot error not following safety procedure that has been in place since the very first 737 flew, not just the MAX.

    I got to fry on one before they were grounded. The plane was with South West and only 3weeks old. Amazing aircraft. Quiet and comfortable. I had a normal volume conversation with the flight attendant three isles away and enjoyed the interior lighting. I will not only fly on them again but I might seek them out. Hell, I’d fly on one now given the chance.

      A320neo is also great! The newest generation is really impressive across manufacturers. Obviously a shame about the MAX problems and grounding, but they are nice aircraft.
